5 biblical keys to personal peace

Updated on May 29, 2010

Don't have any care or anxiety

To not have any care or anxiety may seem to be an impossible task when thinking about it from a physical and natural perspective, but the bible gives keys to achieving this task with supernatural help from the Holy Spirit. First of all we must decide not to have any care or anxiety about anything according to Philippians 4:6. The choice to worry or not is up to the individual and many things that a person may choose to worry about can be avoided through taking responsibility and preparing in advance. The bible says in proverbs 22:3 that a prudent man foresees the evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished. A person who prepares for the foreseen possibilities can have peace of mind because of preparing in advance. A person who waits until the problem arrives at the door will certainly be worried and stressed out. But what about the problems that a person can do nothing about? it is at those moments that one must rely on a higher power. 1Peter 5:7 says to cast all of our care on him (Jesus) because he cares for us. In order to have peace one must totally trust the Lord and his promises that he will cause all things to work together for good (Romans 8:28).

Pray about everything that concerns you

Philippians says to not have any care or anxiety, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving to let your request be made known unto God. Many times people may make known their request to other people who really cannot do anything and this only adds to distress, but to make known one's request to Jesus in prayer brings peace because he can fix the problem. Prayer brings peace to one's mind will and emotions because when that prayer is prayed in faith, there is a confidence and rest in one's spirit which is a sign that all is finished. Think about when something is accomplished; there is a peace and rest that follows the accomplishment. This same peace comes when one has totally cast the care of the problem on Jesus because it is accomplished through his power and grace.

Live peacably with all men

Today we live in a world where stress levels are high because of many reasons. People are more likely to walk by instead of becoming involved; violence is on the rise and many seem to have lost respect for each other. A person who cannot get along with others will not be at peace with themselves and God because God says to forgive that He can forgive us. Many lose their peace over finances because of falling into the category of loving them. The bible says that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil and people who love it may not be at peace with others because of all of the possible tricks and schemes associated with getting and keeping it. There is no peace in stealing from loved ones or being dishonest on the job, I think you understand what I'm trying to say. The bible says as much as lieth within you to live peaceably with all men. It is not always possible to live peaceably with others because we are not responsible for the actions of others, but we are responsible for our own actions. Since we are responsible for our actions , then we are responsible for our peace. We need not allow others to steal our peace. We can live peaceably with enemies by praying for them if there is no other way of coming together physically.

Keep your mind on the Lord

Isaiah 26:3 says that Thou (God) will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusts in thee. We have control over what we think about and if we think about the wrong things, then we can disrupt our own peace. Philippians 4:8 tells us what to think on; things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely,  and of a good report. All of these virtues can be found in the bible and even having a simple bible study or just daily bible reading will bring peace of mind.

Watch what you say

There is a way of knowing if peace is inside or not just by listening to one's words. Jesus said out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 15). If anger is inside, anger will come out; if peace is inside, peace will come out. Jesus spoke to the storm and said "peace be still" because out of everyone on the ship, he was the only one at peace. He knew the ship was going to the other side as he had spoken and when we believe God's word and trust him, we too can speak peace to our circumstances.

What does peace mean to you?
