Online Bible Verses about Redemption- Galatians Chapter 4
Redemption. Today’s focus word.
I remember picking up a copy of Sports Illustrated in 1983. On the front cover was a picture of one of my heroes, Roberto Duran, in action. The caption read “Redemption for Roberto”. Several months prior to that issue, he had disgraced himself by quitting in a fight against Ray Leonard. Prior to that fight, Duran had established himself as a living legend, considered by many to be one of the greatest pound for pound fighters ever. He had handed Leonard His only defeat in their first fight, this was the rematch.
What occurred, kind of every fighter’s nightmare, has happened to me. You get up on the day of a big fight and just do not feel right. Things have gone flat despite the fact you have been training hard. Add to that you are going in against a tough opponent. As you climb steps into the ring on weak legs, realization sets in that this will not be a fun night. So you go in and do what you can.
That’s what happened to Duran that night. But then something worse happened. He quit. The best fighter in the world just up and quit. In the face of sure defeat, a world class fighter takes his lumps and goes out in his shield. You can hit him with whatever you want, but he will take it. You could bring a baseball bat in there and it still would not matter.
For whatever reason, Duran’s wires got crossed up and he walked. Lots of theories; call it bully mentality a la Tyson, or whatever. Bottom line, all men are flawed, we all fail. No one is bullet proof, even a living legend.
Several months later, however, Duran redeemed himself with a courageous effort. Won a world title back in that fight and would go on for 20 more years as pro, having competed professionally in five decades winning multiple titles.
Christ is given many names in the Bible, one is Redeemer. Can you remember something or things in your past that are entirely disgraceful? Things you wish you could forget, but cannot? Only difference between me and Duran is my worst moments were not on pay per view. But they happened nonetheless.
Note another term in today’s verse, that being “law”. If subject to the law of a perfect God and concluding the ramifications of perfect justice, I will thank Him for providing a means of redemption.
