A Passion for Christ and a Passion for Science

Updated on November 12, 2016

Science and Christianity

Genetics is a fascinating field, ever changing and new discoveries being made each day. This intriguing fact tells us that we still do not know everything, even if some in the science community would like to think that they do. There is much to learn both about the mechanisms and the practical application of the knowledge that we already have to bring about cures to some of the ailments that plague the world in which we live.

At my second job I work with genetics and actually design the genes that I want to express. We are using cutting edge technology to try to solve the structure of proteins and of both DNA and RNA. Nucleic acids fold and contort themselves in a genome and in some instances the conformation of the strand could affect what happens with that gene. For instance it is believed that the conformation that the RNA of the HCV (Hepatitis C Virus) genome is believed to regulate whether the gene will be translated (made into protein) or transcribed (copied).

Irreducible Complexity

All these things do nothing for me but strengthen my faith in the God of the Bible and what he has given to us through the authors of the old and new testaments. Through these ancient writings he has made things like the water cycle (Psalm 135). I also see how we use DNA in our lab. How we use Primers that we design to lift out a gene that we want to engineer into a plasmid also causes me to lean more on my faith. These fragments (primers) if they are not perfectly designed will not anneal properly and you will not be able to obtain the fragment that you desire. Also if you do not treat the plasmids with the correct restriction enzymes then you are out of luck, there will be no ligation and the plasmid will remain linear an be rendered useless. All of these things as well as the complexity of the cellular machinery force me to beleive that just as if you look at a building you know that there must be a builder, or a painting and know that there is a painter, you can look at creation and know that there is a creator! Design is apparent in all of creation if you look at the complexity and realize that there is such a thing as irreducible complexity. That is what to me proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is a creator. Irreducible Complexity!

Great article. Biological science is interpreted through the impervious filter of Naturalistic philosophy. This creates a blindness to the self evident fact of design.
