A Prayer of a Desperate Housewife - Out of Order

The Can Opener is in the Laundry Basket

Dear Lord,

I glance around the house and I don't know if I have the courage to finish this day. So many things are out of order. We couldn't find the can opener for half an hour. It turns out it was in the laundry basket. Who put it in the laundry basket? WHY was it in the laundry basket? Why is anything in the weird places I discover them?

The tape measure in the little girl's bedroom, a grape on the bathroom floor, a hairbrush by the toaster, headbands and ponytail elastics in any old corner, things scattered all over the house -- out of order.

Can I hang a sign around my neck that says, "Out of Order"? I don't feel quite in the right place today. I am 'put out', 'scatter brained', and 'disorderly'.

What words do you have for this 'out of order' housewife?

Some favourite words come to my mind.

"You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. Psalm 18: 28, 29.

So I will remove my 'out of order' sign. I will look to You to keep me going. I will advance against the mess and I will restore order to the house. It can be done because 'with my God I can scale a wall' and if that is true, then surely I can sort and tidy a house!

Thank you Lord that you do not leave me alone.

Thank you that I cannot lose You in the mess.

And finally,

thank you

that you restore my soul. (Psalm 23:3a)

Amen.

      beverlyfaye,

      Greetings!

This is a great piece, and while it presented in prose, there is such a

      poetic feel. Voted UP! Shared.

      Best to you,

      ocfireflies aka Kim

I am so glad that the tape measure is in your little girls room too. It is a favourite item among the children and it goes missing on a regular basis. Someday they will all grow up and the tape measure will always be where it is supposed to be and apparently, people tell me, I will miss these messy, disorganized days.

The tape measure is in my little girls room too! She is fascinated with how it snaps back in place after doing its job. It is so wonderful that we serve a mighty and loving God who helps us sort through the wonders we call a house when our children love to hide our goods.

I know exactly how you feel. Some days I feel very "out of order" myself. God always seems to put me back together though.
