What Is My Purpose and Why Am I Here?
Don't Wake Me I'm Dreaming
The bible is a great guide and teacher when it comes to our journey in this life and it is my belief, these stories are a reflection showing us how we are to live this life and endure the obstacles that we encounter. One of my favorite stories in the bible is the one of Joseph and his dreams, Joseph had a purpose just like you and I, and I am only speculating, but maybe once Joseph began to have these dreams he began to wonder about the purpose for his life. Joseph told his dreams to his brothers and his father and normally, these are the people that should be happy about his dreams, but his brothers immediately begin to hate him. Genesis 37:8 (NKJV) says: And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. Joseph’s brothers hated him for his dreams and for his words. Do you think maybe our dreams begin to push us in the direction of our purpose and maybe the obstacles that we face are a catalyst?
When you are on the path to your purpose there are many things that will happen that will attempt to throw you off course and make you want to give up. What if everything that you have been through and have endured in your life was preparing you for your purpose? Maybe you have endured every abuse imaginable, maybe you were abandoned, rejected or ostracized for your individuality. Maybe you were almost shot or have been to jail. Maybe someone you loved inflicted you with a disease or maybe you have spent your life fighting addictions. Maybe you have experienced being homeless and had to sleep in your car and use a gas station bathroom to be presentable for work. If you had to endure these things would you still want to pursue your purpose? While our experiences may be completely different, I believe that every struggle, every trial and every tribulation that we encounter in this life is meant to strengthen us so that we are strong enough to fulfill our purpose in this life.
Joseph’s brothers hated him, his dreams and his words so much, that they plotted to kill Joseph. Genesis 37:18-20 (NKJV) Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him. Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming! Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!” Joseph was nearly killed, placed in a pit to die, sold to slave traders for twenty pieces of silver, was blessed with a great position in Potiphar’s house only to have Potiphar’s wife falsely accuse him of rape. Was placed in prison for being falsely accused of rape, but while he was there he helped a butler who promised to tell Pharaoh of his ability to interpret dreams, but once he was released he forgot about Joseph.
Everything that you and I have endured was meant for our purpose and was meant to be shared with others, just like these stories in the bible. While my story, your story and Joseph’s story are different from one another, they are meant to bless and encourage people who have similar stories. What Is My Purpose and Why Am I Here? To find your purpose, you must find your passion, and when you find your passion you tell your story through your passion. If your passion is writing, whether it is writing stories, articles, songs or poems, write and share your story. If your passion is dancing, playing an instrument, drawing, teaching, making others laugh or inventing things, then you must share your story through your passion. The gifts and talents that we have been blessed with are meant for us to bless others with. The universe wants and needs you to share your gifts with others, because someone needs to receive from your gift. When we share our gifts with others it inspires them to do the same and we were meant to inspire each other. If what you have been through was designed to kill you but only made you stronger, it is time for you to share your story and your gifts with the world.
Joseph could have given up on his dreams, but my belief is when your purpose is ready to be fulfilled on the earth, it will begin to awaken you to who you truly are. Joseph’s dreams led him directly to his purpose and he became second in command to Pharaoh because of his dreams. His dreams helped to save the nation of Egypt and many lands surrounding Egypt from famine. Many people want to know their purpose, and while it may not be to save a nation from famine, our individual purpose is great and is needed. What if your purpose was so great you were not sure if you could succeed at doing it? Are you willing to continue to pursue your purpose, or will fear keep you stepping out in faith?
Your dreams hold your purpose and it is time for us to WAKE UP to who we are and fulfill those dreams. We are given freedom of choice, so you can either continue to bury your dreams and act as if they don’t exist, or you can start pursuing them with passion. What Is My Purpose and Why Am I here? Your dreams have answered your question, but are you listening?
