More Than Conquerors
God does not want us to just barely survive. He has got overcoming in store for each of us - even though it doesn’t always feel like it - we CAN be conquerors. As we experience God as a reality in our lives we can know what it means to become conquerors and God wants to fight with us and on our behalf so that we can become the conquerors we were meant to be.
But what does the bible say about being a conqueror?
In Romans 8:37 it says ‘In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.’ So, because of Jesus, we can be conquerors. We can live on top and be overcomers. In ALL things we can be overcomers. Listen to this phrase: ‘MORE THAN CONQUERORS’. What does it mean to be more than a conqueror? It means to overcome and stay in that place of overcoming victory, as a lifestyle.
You might ask, ‘What is there to conquer?’ There are things in life that would love to get us down but in Romans 8:35 - 37 it says ‘Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or the sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.’ So there is nothing, no sin nor attitude, trial nor tribulations, hardship nor trouble, death nor the fear of death, weakness nor failure, discouragement, despair or hopelessness that is too big for you, together with God, to overcome.
As a conqueror you can start to enjoy victory
1 Corinthians 15:57 says ‘But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.’ With Jesus we are on the winning side and there is the possibility of victory. To be given the victory is to win the war without being conquered. It is God’s heart for us that we would live and walk in victory. Not just a moment here or a moment there, but as a whole lifestyle. Enjoying victory is one of the rewards of being a conqueror.
But what is a conqueror? A conqueror is someone who overcomes. But what is the real meaning of ‘conqueror’? Here are a couple of definitions: To be a conqueror is to get the better of something; to be victorious; to master something; to be an overcomer; to be someone who prevails; to be someone who triumphs; to be someone who is on top. When we overcome we become winners, but in order to conquer, we need to do something. We need to fight. Conquering by its very definition indicates a fight. It means that we win by overcoming or we master something as we overcome obstacles and opposition. It suggests getting the better of something with difficulty or after hard struggle. What have you been struggling with? What have you been experiencing difficulty with? Don’t give up, be strong. As we overcome these things we will win and become conquerors. We overcome one day at a time and win one battle at the time.
How do we conquer?
It is because of what Jesus has done for us. It is because of His love for us. It is NOT something that we can do in our own strength. Romans 8:37 ‘In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.’ We conquer through Him who loved us. We need to know His love. This is more than just head knowledge. We need to experience God and His love for us. Philippians 3:10 ‘For my determined purpose is that I may know Him, that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him.
In Christ we can overcome - Philippians 4:13 ‘I have strength for all things in Christ who empowers me (I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency). Ephesians 6:10 ‘Be strong in the Lord (be empowered through your union with Him) draw your strength from Him (that strength which His boundless might provides). Romans 8:31 ‘If God is for us, who can be against us? (Who can be our foe if God is on our side)?
So, we are able to overcome and be more than conquerors and as a result we have reason to rejoice no matter what we are facing.
