Aghoris - Man Eaters , Cannibals of Varanasi,India

Updated on February 11, 2017

Aghori Saadu

I’m not writing this hub to hurt anyone who belongs to the particular religion or make any offense against these spiritual activities, rituals or any other. But I just want to share some information about a group of sadhus who engaged themselves in cannibalism.

When I was in India, I met a friend who did some researches about Aghoris for their graduation project. I was really shocked to hear all her researching experiences. I’m sharing a few of that information here.

Source

Who are Aghoris?

Aghori is a Hindu sect which is believed as a part of Kapalika (a group worshiped Lord Shiva in his extreme form) and Kalamukhas (Black faces). They live in South Asia mainly in Varanasi and Kashi, India.

According to Hindu beliefs Lord Shiva is the one who destroys the bad deeds and people who engaged in bad deeds. To complete this duty, he turns to another form as Lord Bhairava. He wears nothing but the ash of the burnt dead bodies.

Aghoris believe themselves as a part of Lord Shiva. Most of the Aghoris don’t wear anything other than ash. Some wear only a small piece of cloth around the hip just to cover their private part and garland of skulls. Also they use the skull as begging-bowl.

Many Hindus condemn them as non-Hindu because of their peculiar rituals and activities. What Aghoris actually do, for them to condemn?

Aghoris & Cannibalism

Cannibalism

Hindus believes that the soul of a dead person will rest in peace if they burn their bodies. So they used to take the bodies near Ganga River and burn it there as it is called as holy River which washes off all the sins. Most of the Hindus bring the ashes of the dead bodies from all around the world to do the rituals for "Moksha". When they burn the bodies, sometimes it floats and carries away with water.

Aghoris used to pull these half burnt bodies from water or they find the bodies from the cremation grounds and take it to their Ashramam, do some pooja and pray for that dead one’s soul. Once it is over, they used to cut the parts of the body and have it raw or cooked on open flame.

Source

“If any of your body part tends to work against to your thoughts, destroy them”

Aghoris’ view towards life is totally different. They go in search of powers through which they can avoid the rebirth in this life. They live a free life. They don’t want to have family or kids. They don’t want to leave any mark in this world as a result of their life. The first thing they do is to make them incapable in producing a child. They smash their penises. By doing this they break the link to their next generation.

They believe that whatever you intake will not make any impact unless you give any outcome which affect this world in someway such as anger, lust and revenge. That is why they don’t feel bad about cannibalism or consuming ganja either.

Though they eat the bodies which are burnt, their bodies will not be burnt once they died. They think their body is pure, not like any other normal human. Their bodies will be sent away with Ganga River. They believe this will take them at Lord Siva.

I met many of Agoris in Varanasi a week ago before I even knew who they are. I was just surprised seeing men without clothes, covered their body with white powder (which I later got to know is ashes from the dead bodies) roaming around on the ghats of Ganga river. They did some weird things to their penis like rolling the penis with a stick. It was horrible.

Later my friend told me about them and showed me this note so I got to know more about them. My friend said that some handicapped women try to have sex with these Agoris as they believe that by doing so they will become normal people, poor women.

I did see a part of a dead buffalo floating on the river, luckily i didn't find any floating human bodies on the river but did see some people preparing to burn a dead body on the bank of the Ganga.

Unforgettable experience in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.

      Please don't be judgmental...

They believe everything is made of 5 elements. They don't have duality of good and evil. Also they do such stuffs to overcome the limits of body...Body without soul is nothing but a carcass..so you can't say they are cannibals , they are not killing people they are eating dead bodies....

Shivaism has 3 faces of Lord Shiva Vamdeva, Ishana Shiva and Aghor Rudra.

Aghoris worships 3rd face, Aghor rudra. They renounce every mundane pleasures. They practice in cremation ground because that is the end of physical of body.

So please we should be just have one view. There are lot of unexplained things in world. And if you really wants to the mysticism, go find a Guru (you will be lucky if you find one) .

every part of the body is a sacred trust to you from Allah and if u hurt urself or suicide its against the rule of sacred trust and u will be ask about it.

its all about peace if u don't have inner peace than u try to find peace if these kind of things.

1.not all things in world r explained by us,some r mystical like pyramid.how ppl at that time built such huge structure etc etc many questions.

2.aghories r went to MOKSHA stage where clothes, opposite sex attraction etc natural tendencies don't bother them.they see world as same everywhere.they r in different world ,I mean diff emotional set up beyond normal world.

3.as u can see in Vedas, diff paths are there to attain moksha or higher unconscious.some follow Bhakti path, some skakti path ,some Dnyan n some aghor path.destinatn is same but routes r diff.

4.coming to ur main questn why only cannibal?but as i said not all things r explained by us,maybe some ritual or something such that we even cant think of abt it.

Below that I have marked apache and christian sister's name and thanked for your comments. How come both of you confused yourselves as I have given the answer to you? :-O

Sorry if it was the actual confusion. :)

If I said something negative I still don't see what it is,I am not condoning or disagreeing I just said that there were some here too. I wouldn't want to live around them but I know there must be a purpose for everything.

My comment was not meant to be negative or positive. It is just an observation of my soul. And is only my opinion. I cannot imagine a god that would create us to torture ourselves and others or feed on each other. Yet that is what goes on all over the world but usually not so blatanly.

please know that I did not watch the video. The article was as far as I dared travel. Because I am not strong at stomach.

      @Vjasha,

Moreover you kept an argument about cannibalism. Cannibalism means the act of any animal consuming members of its own type or kind. It doesn't mention whether they are killed by Aghoris or natural death.

I have even heard when people met with an accident they ate the leftover parts of other people who traveled with them once they are dead. Due to starvation only they did it.

But here i don't find any valid reasons to eat human dead bodies other than any religious reasons as you said(If there is any).

I'm curiously waiting to hear from you about the reasons behind this.

      @vjasha

Thank you for reading my hub and placing your comment even in a negative way. First of all read my hub properly, then try to understand what exactly I meant.

In the first para itself I have mentioned, It's not to hurt anybody who is belongs to this particular religion. And I'm not against to the rituals either. But what I wrote is about some saadhus who engaged in this activity. I'm not supporting this nither against this.

But in this hub I have mentioned, the aghoris are condemned by many hindus because of their tabooistic rituals. May be you are in the other side who accept their activities. If you feel they have proper reasons to do this according to the hinduism beliefs, you can very well explain you side here.

      No hard feelings brother/sister.. :)

I didn't watch the video but the hub was very good, there's stories that some of the Native Americans were cannibals. It was a very small percentage but there were some. The Indians could have killed them out but that was not the Indian way so they allowed a balance, strange to me and most but they were here at one time too.I really liked your story.

After seeing the video about them, I couldn't eat for two days. My head was spinning.

They just wander around the streets of Varanasi,India. If you ever pay a visit to India, you can very well meet them I guess.
