Angel of light

Updated on January 11, 2010

Sometimes I hear about people accusing the angel Moroni of being a devil parading as an angel of light, and with that assertion comes another allegation that he was preaching a different gospel, or a false Gospel.

In response to this I quote the epistel of John 4: 1-3

1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

That sseems pretty straight forward to me, now lets have a look at some of the things that Moroni had to say from Joseph Smith's history;

40 In addition to these, he quoted the eleventh chapter of Isaiah, saying that it was about to be fulfilled. He quoted also the third chapter of Acts, twenty-second and twenty-third verses, precisely as they stand in our New Testament. He said that that prophet was Christ; but the day had not yet come when “they who would not hear his voice should be cut off from among the people,” but soon would come.

46This he forbade me, saying that I must have no other object in view in getting the plates but to glorify God, and must not be influenced by any other motive than that of building his kingdom; otherwise I could not get them.

Moroni 1:3 And I Moroni will not deny the Christ...

2:1 The words of Christ which he spoke unto his disciples, the twelve he had chosen, as he laid his hands upon them.

3:2 after they had prayed unto the father in the name of Christ....

3:3 in the name of Jesus Christ I ordain you a priest... To preach repentance and remission of sin through Jesus Christ...

4:1 and they administered it according to the commandments of Christ....

6:3 And none were received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ....

10:1 ...the sign was given of the coming of Christ.

10:34 The great Jehovah the eternal judge of both the quick and dead.

All ten chapters of the book which bears the name of Moroni are replete with admonition for and recognition of the savior Jesus Christ, none of which even come close to misrepresenting his words, or teaching any kind of principle contrary to the teachings of Jesus.

Beware of false prophets

Why is it that when the savior said to "beware of false prophets" didn't he say to beware of all prophets who would come in his name? Surely this statement requires a certain level of discernment.

And that discernment is thus; If the gospel being taught, or the principles being laid out for the foundations of an evil and blasphemous church are fundamentally backwards from the teachings of Christ, his prophets, and his apostles, no level of trickery or sugar coating would be able to hide the fact that whats being said is contrary to the true nature of God.

It is no trivial thing to lead people away from the eternal truths of the Gospel of Christ. And we as children of an eternal father in heaven have been given the ability to know from the depths of our souls the light from the darkness, the virtuous from the unholy, and the Angels from the Devils.

This is why I believe in Prophets and ministering Angels, Because the Lord didn't tell us that he would never send his servants to speak on his behalf again, he never uttered the phrase!

Another way to discern true prophets from false prophets is by the work which they have accomplished.

Matthew 7:15-20

15 ¶ Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

I can say without reservation that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a faith filled church, a church replete with the fullness of the Gospel. The constant work to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and provide assistance to the less fortunate in a variety of ways is a testimony of the very method which the Savior taught to the people during his mortal ministry to adhere to. Not by means of reason or sophistry but to teach by the power of the Holy Spirit.

By the power of Holy Ghost, We receive a witness through our mind and spirit. We must position ourselves, then prepare to receive a witness of his spirit. The restoration of the gospel came as a necessity to us the children of God, its purposes are; that every man might have the spirit of the Lord manifested to them for the building up of faith, to give to us the everlasting covenant of marriage, and to proclaim that message to the ends of the Earth. The message is that the priesthood has been restored to the earth through a restoration by the hands of the Lord and not through a reformation. Why? Because nothing compares to the Melchizedek priesthood, it is not received through wealth or education, but by worthiness. It is the source of all authority in the church, for without faith we can accomplish nothing.

"Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into a house of the Lord your God, and cry unto the Lord" (Joel 1:34).

Very true, by their fruits they shall be known. The LDS church is filled with the fruits of salvation.

The devil can appear as an angel of light. But an angel of light can ALSO appear as an angel of light. A false prophet will claim to be a true prophet yet a true prophet will also claim to be a true prophet. That is why we must test the spirits and decern the nature of their fruit. an excellent hub.

I hope we will all be true followers of Christ in the end. Ofcourse the message can only be taught by the power of the Holy Spirit, if we are to be his vessel we must receive his council by means of thoughtful prayer and fasting. Then he will reveal to us where and when the work is to be furthered.

It seems like I have found a true follower like myself. As a "True Brother To Christ" We have to make God's word heard, a task I hope I am up for as the road is long and filled with pitfalls.

If it wern't for your comments my self esteem might go down a notch. I'm all about the clarification of things and not the debate.

I believe that God made the scriptures this way on purpose, so one would have to appeal to divine guidance in order to clarify the parts of the Bible which may seemingly posess duality. It's not about being a theologen or having a degree in religion in order to know what's right, all you need is the Holy Spirit and you have your guide, all you need to be is worthy and you can have the Priesthood.

      Thank you my friend!

Great hub and explaination. I am afraid a lot of people with twist the scriptures around and make it sound as what they want it to, and without the true meaning, this is very dangerous.

I love how you pointed out that everything they say, Joseph Smith's visions fit exactly what they say...this hub should help them to understand. Thanks for doing it in a straight forward, simple and none offensive method.

      Keep on hubbing!
