Kitty has been communicating with her spirit guides for over a decade. She uses the lessons she's learned through them to write about them.

Connecting with Animal Spirit Guides

Connecting with your animal spirit guide can be enlightening. Understanding your guide can uncover wisdom from deep within yourself. Often the first question people ask me is "how do I know my animal spirit guide?" The answer to this question is quite simple. You don't have to seek out your animal spirit guide. Your animal spirit guide will find you.

Typically when an animal spirit guide makes itself known to you, it will appear recurrently in many different places. Sometimes you'll see them in the wild (with animals living today), sometimes they'll show up on the Television, online in articles or ads, in newspapers/magazines, in dreams, or you might even hear someone talking about it in a passing conversation. If you are open to receiving messages from your animal spirit guide, they will come to you.

Once they appear and you've realized their presence, the best thing to do is to study them. Study the mythology behind the creature, study the various cultures' beliefs of the creature. Study what they eat, their habitat, the ways they move, hunt, and mate. Keep in mind that sometimes after your animal spirit guide's message has been understood, they may disappear. And then another will appear when the next message is ready for you.

Sloth in Folklore & Mythology

Sloths can be found in the tropical jungles of Central and South America. There are two kinds of sloths - two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths, and strangely these two are rather far apart on the evolutionary scale. The sloth gets its name from one of the seven deadly sins - sloth - which was the sin of being lazy. This is because the sloth moves extremely slowly and so it was automatically assigned this derogatory name. However, the sloth has much history with the native peoples of its habitat. Dating back thousands of years, the sloth has been hunted for its meat. Today, they are endangered and hunting is restricted.

The folk tales of sloths today are difficult to find; however, there are many tales of giant sloths that still circulate amongst the people of Central and South America. The mapinguary is the term used for a giant sloth said to roam the Amazonian rainforest, particularly in Brazil. It is said to be as larger or larger than a human, stink severely, and the legend says that the mapinguary will eat humans with a mouth protruding from its belly. This legend is thought to refer back to the giant ground sloths that existed hundreds of years ago but have since died out. Some villagers state they have seen the mapinguary near caves in the rainforest.

The sloth, while slow moving, has also been featured in stories told to children in Brazil. One tells of the sly sloth who outwits five other creatures in the forest, escaping certain death by a hungry jaguar. Looking at the sloth, one might believe it is not the smartest animal, but in fact the sloth uses its natural instinct to escape predatory situations.

The sloth has become more popular in modern day culture and is seen featured in children's movies and books today.

The sloth spirit guide has three main concepts to teach us: cooperation, energy-conservation, and strength.

Sloth Spirit Guide

You may have recently realized your spirit guide is the sloth. Maybe you've seen it in a movie, read about it in a book, or heard its name in a passing conversation. Maybe you've even seen one up close in a zoo or wildlife preserve. Whatever its method of contacting you, the sloth spirit guide has a special lesson to teach you.

The first main aspect of the sloth spirit guide is cooperation. The sloth's fur is home to thousands of organisms that don't normally reside on animal's hides - algae, moths, beetles, roaches and more. The sloth and these creatures form a symbiotic relationship, meaning they live together cooperatively and these creatures do not feed off of the sloth like parasites would. Because of this unique characteristic, the sloth spirit guide may be bringing you the lesson of cooperation or team-work. Perhaps you've been a loner or separated yourself from your family or group of some kind. Now is the time to cooperate and get things done that need to be done.

The second main aspect of the sloth spirit guide is energy-conservation. The sloth is known to move at incredibly slow speeds. This is not because they are lazy as their name would imply but because their metabolism is unique and this is the way in which they preserve their energy. Don't be fooled though. Sloths can move at incredibly fast speeds if they are threatened by a predator of any kind. The sloth spirit guide may have come to you to remind you to take your time in life. Don't over-expend yourself on every day duties. Take time out to care for yourself and nurture your body and mind. If you don't take time to rest, this can cause health problems in many arenas.

The third main aspect of the sloth spirit guide is strength. The sloth is known to hang upside down for days at a time. They can also hold their babies while hanging upside down. Their bodies are incredibly strong and thus the sloth spirit guide has come into your life to teach you of strength. Strength comes in many forms - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. While you may be in a tough situation, the sloth spirit guide will show you how to hang upside down (deal with the situation with humor) and power through it (strength).

There have been several instances of sloths lately in the media. One I liked was the video of two baby sloths "talking" to one another. Way cute! But their appearance is a great reminder to slow down and conserve. Peace!
