Animal Spirit Guides Meanings: Butterfly Spirit Guide

Updated on July 28, 2015
kittythedreamer profile image

Kitty has been communicating with her spirit guides for over a decade. She uses the lessons she's learned through them to write about them.

Animal Spirit Guides

Animal spirit guides come to us when we need them the most and even when we don't know they exist. The Hopi tribe referred to them as Totems but also as spirit guides, the main difference is that an animal Totem would essentially be what an experienced and connected person shapeshifted into and the spirit guide being an animal that brings you messages and guides you along certain paths in your life.

Pretty much any animal in the world can be your animal spirit guide, and animal spirit guides can change quite often depending on the period in your life and the messages you need to receive. In this particular hub, we are talking specifically about the butterfly spirit guide and its importance to the us - to the people the beautiful butterfly chooses to guide. The butterfly spirit guide is a very special one, so if you have the privilege of the butterfly as your spirit is the time to be thankful and learn what he is saying to you.

Butterflies in Legend and Lore

Butterflies have been entertaining and enlightening people since they began their transformations here on earth. They have an energy that is quite unique to only them.

In ancient times, butterflies were regarded as sacred animals to various cultures and peoples including the Greeks, Native Americans, and Chinese. Many of the Native Americans believed that butterflies were messengers of the Great Spirit (God) and would bring messages to them from God and also take their messages back to God. They were regarded as having a connection between earth and sky, which gave them the ability to be messengers of the air. Some Native Americans believed that butterflies would bring good dreams to them. Many Native American women would embroider the symbol of a butterfly onto clothing and pieces to wear in their hair for good luck and good dreams.

The Chinese believed that the butterfly represented a strong bond of young love and pure happiness. The Legend of Liang Zhu tells of a pair of lovers whose lives ended tragically, only for the two of them to emerge from the grave as butterflies. They spend eternity together, flying in and out of the clouds and sky as butterfly lovers. Many Chinese people will say that butterflies embroidered onto linens is a great gift for a new marriage or wedding.

Psyche was an ancient Greek Goddess of love and was often depicted as a beautiful goddess with the wings of a butterfly. It is interesting to note that in the legends of Psyche and her lover Eros, Psyche actually has to go to the underworld...and perhaps she returns as a butterfly. This would fulfill the idea of the butterfly representing transformation - from birth, to death, to resurrection.

To Christians, the butterfly represents the eternal soul and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Butterflies are a common symbol for tombs and graveyards for this very reason.

The Butterfly Spirit Guide

So we've learned a bit about the legends and folklore of the butterfly, but maybe you're thinking "what messages are my butterfly spirit guide trying to bring me?" Think about what the butterfly represents to it joy? Peace? Love? Transformation? Or could it be all of these things in one?

The butterfly spirit guide appears to me when I am getting ready to face a shift in my spirituality...and perhaps that is why the butterfly spirit guide has come to you. And in the case of the butterfly in my video above, his wings are literally like reflective pools...the pools of my soul that he is beckoning for me to look look deeper within myself to find those hidden truths. Have you been searching for answers to spiritual questions? Are you going through a period of spiritual trials? The butterfly spirit guide is here to tell you that transformation is possible...and inevitable. And you will come out victorious and even more beautiful than when you went into the chrysalis, just like the butterfly.

Perhaps these animal spirit guides meanings are setting right for you. Perhaps the butterfly spirit guide is actually here to bring you a message from a recently-passed loved one. She is telling you that your loved one is safe and has moved onto the next plane. Accept the message and be thankful that the butterfly spirit guide has brought you a message from Heaven.

Keep in mind that many people believe butterflies can also be shape-shifted fairies, so perhaps the faerie realm is trying to make contact with you! Ask the butterfly why she has come into your life. Ask her to tell you her message in your dreams or by a sign. You will receive her knowledge freely and openly. Trust me.

You will emerge new just as the butterfly.

vox - Butterflies are amazingly spiritual beings. They represent such a transient cycle of life...

I've been nourishing the love for butterflies ever since I was a child. That's why I often wear clothes with a butterfly theme, or jewellery such as brooch or necklace or a ring with a butterfly form. My favorite jewellery piece is the big amber butterfly brooch I watched for more than a year in the jewellery shop window before I had enough money to buy it. I can't really relate to the spiritual guidance part of the story, but you've encouraged me to draw and paint some more butterflies. I almost forgot how much pleasure I had doing that before.

blake4d - Yes, I've heard of the connection with monarch brainwashing, etc. I just don't know that I subscribe to letting this beautiful creature fall to the wayside of evil men, ya know what I mean? And that's cool about the fact that they're eight legged...I guess I never realized that...they are flying spiders for sure! Ahhh, good old King James...he was a peach wasn't he? Blessings!

I know you didnt want to read my brainwashing hub, but you should read the first and last section of it. For the Monarch is a major symbol in the Maya / Azteca calendar/ the Galactic Butterfly being the representation of the entire calendar without doing complicated math.

One other cool thing, I just recently learned.

Did you know that Butterflies are not insects. They are the only eight legged creature ( i believe ) that has wings. Being eight legged they are therefore related to the Arachnids...that means they are technically a spider, at least after going through their chrystallis cycle.

But their morphology is more like their caterpillar like state. Weird huh? But it does explain why you very rarely if ever see a butterfly caught in a spiders web.

I believe the Praying Mantis is actually their nearest cousin genetically speaking. Guess thats all I have to say.

Oh and historically they were called Flutterbys until King James I made it a decree that all Europeans under his rule say the word 'Butterfly; this was because he had a speech impediment ( probably a lisp ) which he could not say the word correctly. That is probably a little bit myth and fact, but either way, we now claim that Butter can actually fly because of ole KJ. Strange, I don't think Butterfly ever appears as a word in the KJV Bible. Coincidince???

Okay, I am going to quit haunting your hubs for a few, and get some of my own work done. Merry meet, merry part and merry meet again. The circle is open but never broken. Keep on Hubbing. Blake4d

Awww, thanks AP! Oh've tested my knowledge on that one. I'll have to do some research and think about the praying mantis a bit. Hehe.

Believe it was a butterfly alright kitty. Cool read , cool butterfly. Do you know what a Praying Mantis visit might portend? Almost wary about asking lol.

Flashmakeit - Thanks! I'm sure not every Christian believes that, but yes the butterfly is a symbol used in Christianity too.

Beautiful photographs and information. I did not know that Christians thought of the butterfly as an eternal soul and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I hope I understood that correctly. I should be more aware when I visit the graveyards to see if I can find one on a grave.

    Great Hub!

Makes you sad to think of all those Biology Class projects requiring a summer of collecting. I can almost see the spirits rising from the classrooms.

(*note, regardless of reputation, there's no "lol" after that statement)

Seriously, another great and enlightening posting!

It would seem that you are an introducer to Spirit Guides. This is an enchanting hub. Thank you. One of my blood brothers named Beefy Lopez could stand still in the playground and the butterflies would just land on him. The tough guys did not bother him, because as his name suggests,,,,

Great hub, as always kitty! Speaking of moths, we had a moth out in our backyard that was the size of an xbox controller! It was absolutely beautiful, it had a pattern on its wings that looked like a pair of blue eyes.

    Loved this hub! :D

This is beautiful Kitty! I didn't realize that the butterfly could be a guide. I took one of your quizzes awhile back and it said my guide was the hawk. Really touched me because one on of the worst days of my life when I lost someone I was sitting outside alone and a hawk landed about three feet in front of me and just sat by me. I have never had anything happen like that before. I love reading about the guides. Great hub!
