Animal Spirit Guides Meanings: Dragonfly Spirit Guide

Updated on December 21, 2012

Kitty has been communicating with her spirit guides for over a decade. She uses the lessons she's learned through them to write about them.

The Dragonfly Spirit Guide

Animal spirit guides can show up to us unexpectedly. Sometimes in subtle ways, and other times in very blatant ways. Have you been noticing an abundance of dragonfly activity in your yard or neighborhood lately? Has someone given you a gift relating to the dragonfly? Maybe you've been dreaming of the dragonfly recently. Well, the dragonfly spirit guide could be showing up to guide you through this time in your life. There are many animal spirit guides meanings, and the dragonfly spirit guide has a meaning just as important as the rest of the animal spirit guides. Whether we choose to listen to the message of the dragonfly is ultimately up to us; however, the dragonfly spirit guide is one to be honored and openly listened to.

Why are dragonfly spirit guides so ambiguous, yet special? Dating back hundreds of years, many myths and legends of the dragonfly spouted false information, including the idea that dragonflies were "of the devil" and would poke out peoples' eyes with their tails. Scientifically, this is untrue; however, people also believed that the dragonflies could wake a snake and were in "cahoots" with the snake. Another silly superstition, most likely began by the early Christian church.

One encouraging and enlightening myth (or reality for Pagans) is that the dragonfly is one of the animal spirit guides to the goddess Freya. The Chinese and Japanese have long regarded the dragonfly as a holy animal of sorts. Some people even believed that the dragonfly was once a dragon, hence the name. Dragonflies are not just spirit guides, they are also very useful in the natural world such as their tendencies to fight off the mosquito population. But how can the dragonfly spirit guide aid you in your life and spirituality right now?

The dragonfly spirit guide may be coming to you to teach you one or all of the following: skill, refinement, relentlessness, and/or creativity. Watch the dragonfly spirit guide in your dreams or simply watch the dragonfly on a video or in nature and observe their movements. They seem to never give up...never resting for more than a few seconds. They are relentless...maybe you need that characteristic to develop in your life right now. Maybe you've been stagnant and need some motivation to keep going. Whatever the dragonfly spirit guide is trying to tell you or guide you to, listen openly and carefully. Let the dragonfly spirit guide speak to you and maybe tell you of ways to improve your skills or creative abilities.

The dragonfly spirit guide is almost always in motion, so don't expect to sit on your butt and wait for its message. You might need to put yourself into motion to align with the dragonfly spirit guide. Then maybe his message will be clear to you.

I have been going through back and neck pain, that leds all over, that is hard to pin point. My husband is being wonderful, but I know.... he wants me to get better and go back to work. Not that I mind working, but the way I feel, i'm going to end up in a wheelchair if I don't get answers.

I was feeling depressed about it. I went and sat in my garden to let spirit speak to me. I I not only saw butterflies start to come in, but had a dragonfly swing by me and touched my hand with its tail. I know now. I have to be relentless in standing my ground to find a solution. No matter who says what. I need to do what's best for me . The butterfly made me realize I will transition to a better me. Physically and spiritually. Thank you for writing these. They have helped me stay positive. Sorry to everyone else for the vent. lol

Loved your article. I have always believed dragonflies to bring good luck. I never thought of them as spirit guides, but I do like that idea.

Excellent writing and comforting to think that dragonflies might have a spiritual message for us. There are tons of dragonflies where I live in a retirement village in Cave Junction, Oregon. I just survived at terrible car wreck. I'll accept all the support I can get from any life-form. Peace and Light...Gary.
