Introduction to Wolf Spirit Guides

The wolf is one of the most common Animal Spirit Guides. Known for their strength and power, they are often feared by people who do not understand them. Wolves rarely attack unless provoked. Most known wolf attacks on humans have either been from sick wolves or wolves that were being harassed or felt in danger. This being said, wolves should still be shown a great deal of respect and not messed with.

"Many believe that the true test of America's sincerity about protecting the environment will revolve around whether or not the wolf remains protected and is allowed to be reintroduced into areas of the country where it has heretofore been eliminated." - Ted Andrews in his book Animal Speak.

Wolves have a hierarchical system with a male and the female being the leaders. This male and female are referred to as the Alphas, or Alpha Male and Alpha Female. The Alphas are known for mating for life and are known for being very protective and caring of each other and their pups.

Animal experts have witnessed cases in which wolves appeared to be "working" with ravens to spot out food and resources. Ravens are often seen following wolves where they go and indicating to the wolf locations of weak animals for them to prey upon.

Quick Notes

  • Cycle of Power: Year round during Full Moons and Twilight
  • Strong sense of family and community
  • Month: February 19 - March 20 Big WInds Moon (sometimes shared with the Cougar)
  • Strong relationship with the Raven

Wolf Spirit Guide Meaning

The wolf spirit teaches you to be strong and to know yourself. Having a wolf spirit guide is great for someone who struggles with self-confidence and expression. The wolf spirit teaches us to not be wasteful and to use all of the resources available to us. If you're struggling with money, or courage, or just normal distressing things in your life, call upon the wolf spirit and ask for guidance.

Wolves are known for working with ravens. In your spirit guide search, if you feel drawn to the wolf it would be a good idea to research the raven as well and see if the raven spirit calls to you. It is perfectly acceptable to have more than one animal spirit guide, although most people only have one or one "main" animal. If you feel the raven is calling to you as well as the wolf, do not be afraid to embrace it.

The wolf is very family oriented. They are territorial and loyal to their pack and their family. The wolf spirit teaches us to keep our family and the ones we love first and to protect them. This level of territorial-ness and protection can come across as being possessive, however this is not the case. The wolf spirit doesn't teach us to be possessive but rather to keep the ones we love sacred and close and to always protect them. If you are searching for guidance and protection within your family, the wolf spirit would be a great spirit guide to commune with.

The wolf spirit teaches us to take control of our lives and get things done. Always remember to do all of this in harmony with nature and not to harm others. If you need any of the things covered in your life, try to establish a connection with the wolf spirit and ask it for guidance. You can do this through your dreams, in meditation, through spirit walks, or with the help of a Native American Spiritualist or Shaman.

Since I was small I have been drawn to wolf. Would sneak as close to the fence at the zoo (behind trees and bushes where I wouldn't be seen) as I could and talk to and pet them much to my father's horror - when he found me. I would be dragged from my hiding spot kicking and screaming at which point my friends would bare their teeth and become quite agitated.

Interesting. Haven't thought about this in ages.

Wow! I never knew this before. Yet I'm pretty sure the wolf is my spirit guide, he's showed himself to me in a few of my dreams very vividly. It's not like actual talking but it's symbols like stuffed animals, etc. Plus I get sudden flashes of wolf images in my head and find wolf objects everywhere I go. However he does talk in my head a lot and I see images of his form while still awake, his name is Wolfie and he's a large grey wolf with grayish-silver eyes, I've had him since I was very young and he has helped me through tons of things. May I say he is very knowledgeable on many subjects! He helped me through math, for example when I'm having trouble on a problem ill ask him and he helps me out...the next thing I know I get a one hundred on that problem and right now as of current my whole math class. This deals the same with other subjects as well, but I mostly need help in math.

He's very fun-loving and kind too, I'm not in the least bit afraid of him...he's very humerous and he has helped expand my imagination past its limits and pushed me forth to achieve

Whenever I have a problem or life issue I go to him and he lifts me up and raises my mood while giving me advice and options, sometimes he'll cuddle up next to me while I'm telling him my problems and hear me out while he comforts me ( we have a pretty strong bond )

He's given me a lot of wisdom and advice throughout my years

Sometimes we just have normal conversations, for example, how's your day going? Good? Was the movie worthwhile? Oh yes! It was fabulous! There was this guy...

So yeah me and my wolf spirit guide are really close...he knows I don't have a lot of friends so hes always there for me when I need him :D

I'm thinking about looking a little bit more into raven spirt guides because I see them everywhere as well, more than five times I see ravens swoop down in front of me and just stand, walk, and stare. There very intrigueing

I share a lot of qualities with the Fox too in fact the fox allures me to learn more about him/her :) I see him every once in a while in my head his name is Lyito and he speaks fast, runs fast, everything's fast. He lives underneath the ground he tells me in a civilized Fox Colony so he basically just pops up out of nowhere XD

I really like the depth this article goes into! I also agree with the importance or emphasis of family for people with this animal as their spirit guide or totem. I've never heard about the Raven connection with Wolf.. so I'm definitely going to investigate that more. Thanks! Another great article on wolf as a spirit guide is

I have always wondered what my guide was, and if I could even have one since I don't know if i have native background. Though this morning I prayed and I have a strong feeling that my guide has always been with me and is in fact a wolf. Though I don't know his actual name, I call him roan, and if that is his name than awesome heh, after reading this, I realized that my guide has to be a wolf because many of what I read, describes me. I am very defensive and need help learning not to be so possessive, hopefully my guide will help me with that as stated in your article

i have found the wolf,or should i say the wolf found me. I think a lot of people are missing the point of a spirit guide. these animals choose you or are around you and you don't even realize they are there, or you pay no attention to them due to lifes issues. we humans are programed and we ignore what's right in front of us all along. since i was a kid i was always facinated with wolves. i never knew the meaning or nature of the wolf, but i knew there was a connection.i like a lot of different animals but the wolf is the one that was with me all my life. I meditated for days trying to figure out what my spirit animal was, and after days it hit me like a ton of bricks. the wolf came to me time and time again. after knowing the wolf was my guide i read what the wolf stood for and not to sound like some spiritual know it all, but it was dead on. i have been guided by the wolf in several life situations and i have never been let down. my advice for newcomers looking to spirit guides, look right in front of you. and though you might love all animals there will be that one animal that will make you feel like your connected.

This is amazing. I am going through a huge life change right now and I started with a hawk and then I wanted to know about myself and found that the wolf coincides with my birthdate. Its interesting to see that the wolf is about teaching. That's one of the things I love to do most is teach. But I guess im a little afraid and don't know what to teach. Ill have to look at the raven then and maybe it can help show me a path. or maybe I neex to find my own. I guess im just a little lost right now

Danielle, LOVED this hub. The wolf is one of my favorite animals/entities. I wish I could have one to keep me company but my town will not allow animals except domestic dogs, cats, birs and such. I voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful and interesting. YOU are a fantastic writer, Danielle. And I am so glad to have met you on hubs. I invite you to visit my hub collection and see if you enjoy my takes on life. Sincerely, Kenneth Avery, from a rural town, Hamilton, in northwest Alabama that looks a lot like Mayberry, the sweet town on the Andy Griffith Show. Much peace and happiness to you is my prayer.

@Lily: Alaska looks so beautiful. I grew up in Arkansas and we had wolves all around us. I used to be so scared of them but then I realized my fear was over nothing. Blessed be!

@Saddlerider: That's amazing! I'm sure that was quite the site. Thank you for reading my little hub and I'm glad you found it informative. :)

I remember well in my trucking days driving through the northern prairies and northern Ontario. I've seen timber wolves walking as ravens flew beside them, I even saw a huge black raven perch itself on a timber wolf along highway 17 in Northern Ontario, it was quite the site.

So yes, I truly believe they have some communication between the two of them going on. I adore wolves, always have, I feel their strength, loyalty, leadership and fearlessness. I have a lot of respect for them and give them plenty of space when I have come across them in the woods. Thank you for sharing this information, very helpful and interesting.

@Rebecca: You are very welcome! The coyote might very well be trying to connect with you. It is often the animals that we fear the most that end up being our spirit guides. Blessed be!

@Cherylone: I love the wolf too. They are beautiful creatures. If the wolf calls to you, you are truly blessed. I hope you figure out what your spirit guide is meant to be! Good luck!

Thanks for an informative Hub. I love my pets but need to pay more attention to the wild. I will try not to be so spooked out by the coyotes I hear at night. Maybe they are trying to be my Spirit Guide?
