Bible prophecy and tribulation!

Tribulation and Bible prophecy is on the minds of many around the world these days as we witness natural disasters of "biblical proportions!" While there are many views depending upon your own religious beliefs, my own beliefs are ones based upon the scriptures of the Bible. I believe in listening to preachers, but check out what they say against what scripture states, just like the "Bereans" that the Apostle Paul commends in the book of Acts for doing the same.

That being said, I realize that my views aren't always the ones held by the majority of Christians. There is room in the realm of "orthodox Christianity" for several differing views of what is to yet happen in the prophecies of last days events. Since we are not told all things, but only bits and pieces in scripture, we can only know in part until these things are fulfilled. As the old sayin goes, "Hindsight is 20-20, but we tend to be near-sighted of the future."

I completely discounted Christianity while growing up, until the age of 21, having looked into the face of "evil," I saw that evil was real in this world and started seeking to know if God was true. After taking classes on the "Bible prophecies" that have been fulfilled, such as the world powers in Daniel, the truth of the God that can accurately and consistently foretell the future did much to establish my faith.

(Bible quotes are from the New Living Translation) While I like to read and study many versions, this is a good, accurrate translation for communicating with people in a world that no longer speaks in King James English! Hebrews 11:1 What is faith? It is the confident assurrance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see.

While most Christians know that Jesus Christ lived and walked the earth, many unbelievers doubt that Jesus even existed. Josephus and other secular historians refer to Jesus as being an actual person who did many miracles, many of these proofs are referenced in the book, "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell.

The prophecies I want to examine first are those prophecies from the Old Testament about Jesus Christ that have been fulfilled to the letter! Let's examine these with the science of compound probabilities; the mathematical study of situations and the odds of possible outcomes.

There are literally hundreds of O.T. prophecies about the person who would be the Jewish Messiah and how he would be recognized by fulfilling these scriptures. Professor Peter Stoner looked at these in Science Speaks and examined these with the science of compound probabilities. Let's look at the results he came up with for just eight of the clearly defined, messiah specific, and out of human control, yet clearly fulfilled prophecies of Jesus.

Prof. Stoner calculated that the compound probability of just eight of these prophecies of Jesus being fulfilled came to the odds of 10 to the power of 17, or one chance in 100,000,000,000,000,000. To put that in perspective, that's like covering the whole state of Texas with silver dollars, painting one blue, and sending someone blindfolded out with one chance to pick the right one. Do you really think that all of those prophecies could have been made up by various men, several hundred years in advance, all fulfilled by one "man" without God? Really?

  1. Messiah's place of birth, yet before his human existence; Micah 5:2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village in Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past. The fulfillment of this is found in several locations, but let's look at Matthew 2:1a Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod...

  2. Time of messiah's birth; Daniel 9:25 . Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven (years) will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses despite the perilous times. This is fulfilled in Mark 11:11b So Jesus came to Jerusalem and went into the Temple. (This was done to the exact day when prophecied, taking into account the changes in length of calenders, it was 483 years from when Cyrus issued the decree in 538 B.C.)

  3. The manner of birth Isaiah 7:14 All right then, the Lord himself will choose the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel-God with us. Fulfilled in Matthew 20 b-21; For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

  4. Betrayal for 30 pieces of silver Zechariah 11:13 And the Lord said to me, "Throw it to the potters"- this magnificent sum at which they valued me! So I took the thirty coins and threw them to the potter in the Temple of the Lord. Clearly fulfilled in Matthew 26:49 So Judas came straight to Jesus, "Greetings, Teacher!" he exclaimed and gave him a kiss. Matt. 27:3 When Judas, who betrayed him, realized that Jesus had been condemned to die, he was filled with remorse. So he took the thirty pieces of silver back to the leading priests and other leaders, "I have sinned," he declared, "for I have betrayed an innocent man."

  5. Jesus's manner of death, and gambling for his clothes, Psalm 22:16-18,(Note the crucifixion details, written 800 years before crucifixion was used by the Romans for execution.) My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet. They divide my clothes among themselves and throw dice for my garments. Fulfilled in Matthew 27:35 After the had nailed him to the cross, the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwind dice. (casting lots)

  6. That he was beaten and died for our sins, Isaiah 53:4,5,8 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment for his own sins! But he was wounded and crushed for our sins. He was beaten that we might have peace. He was whipped and we are healed! From prison and trial they led him away to his death. But who among the people realized that he was dying for their sins- that he was suffering their punishment? This is spoken of in 1 Peter 2:24 He personally carried away our sins in his own body on the cross, so we can be dead to sin and alive to what is right. You have been healed by his wounds!
  7. Being mocked Psalms 22:7,8 Eveyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying, "Is this the one who relies on the Lord? Then let the Lord save him! vIf the Lord loves him so much, let the Lord rescue him!" It states in Mark 15:29,30 And the people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. "Ha! Look at you now!" they yelled at him. "You can destroy the temple, and rebuild it in three days, can you?"

  8. Among criminals in death, yet buried in a rich man's tomb; Isaiah 53:9,12 He had done no wrong, and he never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man's grave.I will give him the honors of one who is mighty and great, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among those who were sinners. He bore the sins of many and interceded for sinners. Finally, in Matthew 27:38,57,60 Two criminals were crucified on either side of him, their crosses on either side of him. As evening approached, Joseph, arich man from Arimathea who was one of Jesus' followers, went to Pilate to ask for Jesus' body. Joseph took the body and wrapped it in long linen cloth. He placed it in his own new tomb, which had been carved out of rack.

Does scripture point towards apocaliptic events unfolding?

The Odds of These Fulfilled Prophecies Point to Divine Origin

Just the eight prophecies we've examined that were fulfilled by Jesus Christ point to the divine origin of the scriptures in the Bible. Jesus literally fulfilled hundreds of prophecies with his short 33 years on earth. There are some yet to be fufilled prophecies that pertain to Jesus' second coming and others that apply to last days events. The odds of Jesus fulfilling just these eight gives us assurrance that God will fulfill all his promises before the end.

Let's look at some of the other last days events that are yet to be fufilled from Matthew 24. He speaks of wars and rumors of wars, and nations and kingdoms being at war with one another. The last 100 years have had wars constantly being waged around the globe, with deaths totaling over 100 million. Things such as earthquakes and floods in diverse or various places are spoken of as the symptoms of childbirth. The last few years have been full of catastrophic natural disasters with unprecedented deaths and destruction.

Jesus also mentions that false prophets, teachers, and false "messiahs" will be numerous at the time of the last days, or before his second coming. He also states that this will be a dangerous time for his followers, that those who follow him will be imprisoned, persecuted, and put to death because of their allegience to him (Jesus).

Many preachers and teachers teach that Matthew 24 doesn't apply to Christians, according to their pre-tribulation rapture view, the church will be gone, so that this chapter in Matthew only applies to the new Jewish converts. While this seems to be the predominant view today, and sounds better that we'll be raptured before all these tribulations, scripture doesn't appear to verify this interpretation.

The Hebrews never accepted any coming judgements from God's prophets, so it's no suprise that we don't care to either! Matthew 24:29-31 speaks quite clearly that the angels will gather together the elect immediately after the tribulation of these days! One of the main methods of Bible interpretation is to let scripture interpret scripture, several other places also mention that we will need faith to endure to the end. Just as the Hebrews that were enslaved in Egypt endured persecutions as the plagues were poured out on the Egyptians, these things are told for examples to us. Even though God's plagues were being poured out on the Egyptians, the Hebrews and their offspring, cattle, etc. were not touched by any of these plagues.

Both Revelation and Daniel speak of these times of persecution, and how they will be used to show who God's children really are, and to purify the faith of the saints. To say that we will be gone and just the new Jewish converts are here is forgetting that we were grafted into their tree of faith, and are in not in any way superior to Jewish saints. When this is actually the grafting back in of the new Jewish converts, as both Jews and Christians will suffer severe persecutions under the authority of the anti-christ.

While no one location in the Bible tells all there is to know on any subject, it is by studying the whole counsel of God that we start to get a good grasp on what God wants to say on the subject. While Matthew is a good concise summary of the last days prophetic events, but reading Revelation, Daniel, Ezekiel, Thessalonians and other places to see how they all fit together, along with praying for understanding is mandatory.

Conclusion for Accuracy of Bible prophecy

Forgive me for such a long and drawn out start to this, just to point out why I believe in Jesus Christ as the prophesied Messiah and the Son of God. These prophecies are not made up by man, but written down by men of God through inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to testify of Jesus as the Word of God made flesh. This is why I believe in all the words of scripture and have faith that all those prophecies yet to be fulfilled, will be fulfilled before the end! I'll have to resume the Last Days prophecies in another hub. Thanks for bearing with me, if you made it this far!
