Apples Bananas & Red Wine for Shango
We children of Shango are categorized as being great eaters. A way to a mans heart is through his belly, is said. And, Shango as an Orisha is known to love food, and his children grow big bellies in time. And, if they stay slim, because of their metabolism, they can beat anyone in a food challenge. Through observation I've noticed that in time we children of Shango begin to have heart, digestive, and renal problems. And, if we do not take care of ourselves, we become diseased at a young age.
This document is meant to help all folks that come from a background such as mine. Of, eating rich foods with all kinds of stews made of thick sofrito laced in tomato sauce & wine. Foods with spices such as cumin, oregano, cilantro, with sauteed onions, garlic, red & green bell peppers; caramelized by the olive oil and wine. If we have olive oil, that's fine. But, nothing beats shortening and vegetable oil. For frying crackling, plantains, and all kinds of chips, fritters, and breaded things. Oh yes, we don't just eat breaded steak, nahha.. We bread shrimp, chicken, fish, pork. We make cod fish fritters, black eyed pea fritters, (croquetas) croquet's, & Koko yam fritters. We have fish, lobster, ham, chicken, and pork croquet's(croquetas). We Cubans, make not just fried or baked beef patties. We make, chicken, pork, beef, fish, shrimp, lobster, and guava/guava & cheese patties called empandas. We don't fry or grill catfish & tilapia(not fishy enough). We eat everything that comes out of the Ocean. Snapper, grouper, yellow tail, barracuda, marlin, sailfish, shark, Caribbean tuna, king fish, mackerel, & pompano. We not only fry fish we bake it, stew it, smoke it, blacken it on the pan. And, I haven't even gotten into the different beans, fowls, crustaceans, and soups. Let alone the Cuban pastries, bread, and crackers. Want to laugh, the ingredients for a big square Cuban cracker or bread stick is; Shortening/lard, salt, flour, & yeast. I say pure cholesterol, and ummm so good!
I believe my family is even more diverse than other Cuban families. Grandfather from Havana, grandmother from Santiago. We cover from the southern tip to the Northeast, top of the Island. Then coming to New York in the mid 60's, and teaming up with Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Colombians, & Ecuadorians. And, not to undermine our other friends from other nationalities. Followed by moving to Miami where I got exposed Jamaican & Bahamian foods. Forget it! no wonder throughout my life I've been maintaining an average weight of 230, peaking at 260, until the angina pains began at age 47.
Which brings me to Bananas, Apples, and Red Wine. These are some of the most widely known offerings/libation given foods to Shango. It is also widely understood that we children of Shango are sometimes forbidden from eating these foods, as taboo. Forsaking(sacrificing), the food offered to our guardian Orisha in order to gain health, peace, prosperity, and harmony in our lives, by him. Well, I beg to differ. I believe that Shango new all along the benefits of his children eating theses foods. I realized this after investigating the nutritional and pathological benefits of these foods.
Why? Is it widely understood, since the beginning of time. That an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Did you know that the one of the worlds most famous fruit, the apple can serve as preventive treatment to avoid the big three diseases (Heart, Cancer, & Diabetes). The apple pectin may help reduce blood cholesterol. It is a known fact that the pectin helps maintain the cholesterol in the intestinal tract until it is eliminated. It aids in flushing out the cholesterol, and keeping it from moving through too other glands or arteries; where it becomes plaque. The Cancer society recommends a high fiber diet. Pectin binds certain cancer causing compounds in the colon. And for diabetes, the pectin also helps control glucose or blood sugar levels.
Red wine specifically Pinot Noir, Cabernet, & Merlot, have some of the highest levels of resveratrol. The grape antioxidant agent which contributes to anti-aging, cholesterol reductions & helps fight cancer. Antioxidants help protect cells from being damaged and becoming cancerous. It is highly concentrated in the skin and seeds. Where today there are supplements which help us obtain this agent, without getting drunk.
And, last but not least Shango's bananas. The banana,"amazing", it can be used to treat the following; Intestinal disorders, Ulcers, Colitis, Anemia, Constipation, Diarrhea, and aids in the removal of kidney, gall bladder, and prostate stones.
