Appreciating the simple things in life
I decided to write this topic to help us remember the simple things in life. I’m trying to live in thanksgiving and appreciation. The world has become a busy place; we are bombarded with bad news daily, bad things happen to good people. We spend so much time on our new gadgets, our heads in our laptops, our mobile phones that we miss the beauty that surrounds us. Life is beautiful and sometimes it’s good to stop and notice the beauty God has created around us.
Each day I take a few minutes a day just to appreciate Gods beauty.
Unfortunately at this time of the year we don’t always get to see the sunrise but when I do it’s the most beautiful thing in the world. I remember running one early morning, and watching in the distance as I ran facing the beautiful orange sun. It made me feel alive and grateful that I was able to take a run that morning. We honestly have no power within ourselves to make the sunrise in the morning and yet everyday without fail the sun rises.
Two weeks ago I took time to stop tapping at my computer at work and just look out the window and saw the most beautiful sunset. The sky looked purple and it gave violet looking colour, a description to beautiful to describe in words. My friend rang me up and asked me if I’d seen it, we were so excited by the beauty of that sky and I thought it was a beautiful sight. Just the feeling of getting excited makes you realise how privileged you are to be here on this earth.
Listening to the birds sing
When was the last time you heard the birds sing? If you take a minute to stop and listen you’ll hear them. I realised not too long ago that I’d been so busy and I’d failed to hear the birds sing and chirp in the morning. Music blasts in our house in the morning, there is also the noise of the radiators and we’re busy, busy getting ready. But just once, a few minutes before getting out of bed, try and see if you can hear the birds singing. Just listening and hearing them makes me glad to be alive, waking up another day to hear them sing is the best thing in the world
Watching the snow fall from the sky
Right now as I’m writing my little girl is staring out the window watching the snow fall from the sky. In a minute we’ll go out and let it land on our tongues. Just the simple act of watching this white glorious snow is amazing. Watch a child and see how their eyes light up. They understand what pure joy is, it isn’t in the gadgets they got last Christmas, it’s in the simple act of being able to go play out in the snow or splash in puddles.
My best friend is amazing. I was talking to the other day and she had such joy in her voice as she described to me how she was watching a mother rabbit nurture it’s young. She had been in the office and she turned to the window and saw this rabbit nozzle its baby’s nose. Just her description of the scene made me think how beautiful that view was. She told me she’d gone into her manager’s office to tell her, but her manager didn’t seem fused. It’s sad that some people have lost the joy and appreciation of nature. They are missing out on the key elements to happiness.
By appreciating the simple things we will begin to understand the dynamics of the universe. The bigger picture of our world is only possible by the small things of this world, the small things we take for granted. The fresh fruit you get from your local supermarket was part of a chain of a small process. I try to always remember to thank God for allowing the rain for the farmer to produce the crops. Without the rain there will be no crops, no crops, no food, no food, no us.
By taking time and appreciating the simple things we will begin to realise how the simple things contribute to the bigger picture. You will also find that them more you appreciate the more you will notice and the more abundance and joy you’ll have in your life.
