"God is my Light."
"And the angel that was sent unto me, whose name was Uriel . . ." 2 Esdras 4:1
Glory to God and his deeds,
for everything is good and wonderful.
Holy Archangel Uriel,
protect and look after rivers,
their waters we drink . . .
Author’s note: Rivers are of the water element and correspond to the body's circulatory system and the emotions. Archangel Uriel helps maintain not only cleanliness of these “waters,” but also an even, peaceful, and orderly flow.
In my spiritual studies covering 28 years and more, I had, at one point, never heard of Archangel Uriel. I had been raised Catholic, visited a yoga ashram, read literature by the Theosophical Society and Mary Baker Eddy (Founder of Christian Science), and joined the Keepers of the Flame Fraternity in 1985. It wasn’t until my exposure to the Keepers of the Flame that I learned of Archangel Uriel.
According to the teachings, Uriel primarily guides ministration and service, which doesn’t just mean Holy Orders, but includes volunteer service organizations, such as the Peace Corps, Volunteers of America, The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and simple acts of kindness to one another.
In regards to the physical body, the solar plexus channels this “sixth ray.” On an energy level, the solar plexus is often referred to as the solar chakra. The primary purpose of the chakra is to maintain a vibration of peace. Often when anyone has to perform in front of an audience, the feeling of “butterflies in the stomach” characterizes the loss of peace due to stage fright.
My Personal Experience
Archangel Uriel is personally meaningful because I had been meditating on each of the seven rays (a different one for each day of the week) until recently when I decided to try to focus primarily on one of them.
I had a near death experience in December 2011 when I was hospitalized for dehydration and weight loss. Upon release, I was placed in a group home sponsored by a mental health organization through the court system. I was dissatisfied with my placement. Rather than blame the people around me, I examined myself and realized that the group home was due to my lack of taking responsibility for my life and remembered that “faith without works is dead.” So, I decided to base the next phase of my life in ministration and service by doing volunteer work. Condensing children’s stories for a library program sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, reading to the elderly in the local nursing home through the county’s literary council, and singing in the church choir supplemented weekly house cleaning and yard work. I had already been quilting and giving my quilts to anyone who wanted one.
Uriel and His Ministering Angels Tend Jesus
After fasting in the desert forty days and forty nights, Jesus rebuke's Satan's temptations and is ministered by angels.
So Satan fell; and straight a fiery globe
Of Angels on full sail of wing flew nigh,
Who on their plumy vans received Him soft
From his uneasy station, and upbore,
As on a floating couch, through the blithe air;
Then, in a flowery valley, set him down
On a green bank, and set before him spread
A table of celestial food, divine
Ambrosial fruits fetched from the Tree of Life,
And from the Fount of Life ambrosial drink,
That soon refreshed him wearied, and repaired
What hunger, if aught hunger, had impaired,
Or thirst; and, as he fed, Angelic quires
Sung heavenly anthems of his victory
Over temptation and the Tempter proud:—
--Milton, Paradise Regained (Book 4, Lines 581-585)
Instrumental in Jesus' Resurrection
Was Jesus tended to in the tomb? Who rolled away the stone?
While these details not mentioned in the Bible, it is clear that an angel was there--a ministering angel, the role of Archangel Uriel!
So, Archangel Uriel is my guide. I can think of no greater goal at this point of my life than to serve in a mission of world peace, which both Jesus and Archangel Uriel espouse. But, the carnal mind is tricky, and I have to constantly remind myself what is important. Refraining from self guilt and expressing forgiveness are keys to the gifts of grace and peace. And so, now I have Archangel Uriel to assist as I conquer fear and, ultimately, death itself.
