Astrological elements - how they shape your identity

Updated on March 20, 2011

Fire, Earth, Air and Water -Intuition, Sensitivity, Imagination and Emotion

All astrological charts contain fire, earth, air and water

Although star signs horoscopes made astrology popular, they had done terrible damage to our understanding and respect for astrology. Nowadays when someone talks about astrology, the first thought that springs to mind is about a single birth sign rather than the totality of the chart. Professional astrology faces a very difficult mission which is to reiterate that we are a unique combination of every single birth sign and no one can be only Taurus or Aquarius or Gemini. The first thing to understand in order to start appreciating astrology and its wisdom is that an astrological chart is almost like a fingerprint with a unique combination of elements, planets, birth signs, astrological relations and points that will not repeat their identical interaction under any circumstance. Any attempt to classify human beings within restricted categories is overlooking the amazing complexity existing within every one of us, our changes in mood, ideals and paths throughout life.

Every individual will have a unique combination of elements in his natal chart, regardless of his sun sign or the most prominent characteristics. The elements provide a clue about our trends and tendencies when we face particular situations. In the face of adversity for instance, some of us would become angry or find inner strength whilst others would look for protection and become more introverted. These are instances where astrological elements may prompt a person's reaction.

Each element in the chart can help to identify the paths we are more likely to follow as well as the paths we should actually take in order to find balance and inner harmony. If you don't know what's the strongest element in your natal chart, there are plenty of resources on-line to help you find out however it is always best advise to find out from a professional astrologer how your chart is shaped. If this article tickles your curiosity, feel free to leave a comment with your date, time and place of birth and I will let you know what's the distribution of your elements. That should point you in the right direction.

These are just general characteristics and as everything in astrology, the wisest knowledge has grown from observing nature and understanding how our own nature reflects what surrounds us.

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are the astrological fire signs and they all share similar potential based on the qualities of Fire. Fire in a natal chart can translate into resourcefulness, a joyful and carefree attitude and even the capability to follow your guts and succeed. The fire element implies an explosive quality which only becomes useful when it is attached to something. Fire does not survive if there isn't some material or surface to burn and fire will eventually transform that surface into something completely different. The same way, it is impossible to be simply "creative" unless that same creativity translates into skill and talent put to work. The results are something different and transformed. When fire is strong in a chart the potential for creativity is evident but there needs to be material consistency so that brilliant ideas can become a reality.

Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn belong to the Earth element and are related with the material world. This translates into the search for material and concrete achievements, the capability to build and produce and also the connection with natural processes we observe day to day such as a plant growing or the birth of a child. The earth element in the chart is an important factor to determine the capability of an individual to bring to fruition his plans and projects, find wealth and comfort or simply understand his values and self-esteem. When earth is prominent in a chart it may lead to excessive density where the only interest is in material wealth or even the need to focus on the physical realm or the senses, which may limit our opportunities to approach the world with a fresh pair of eyes and open to new alternatives. The concrete realization of our thoughts is important, but without ideals and a more spiritual look into life, our existence is likely to become dull and stagnant.

Gemini, Aquarius and Libra are the air birth signs. Pollen uses the wind as a way to travel and fertilize new flowers and this is a good example of how air in astrology follows the same principle; this element relates with communication and relationships, the world of ideas and thought. It is through the air sign that ideas take place and are exchanged with others, eventually fertilizing the world we live in and providing us with new views about our surroundings. Astrological charts with strong emphasis in air can show individuals who are known for their interest in interaction and exchange, their communicative nature or a rational approach to life that looks for explanations and logic patterns. It is important to remember however, that we live with our feet supported on the ground and that we cannot fly on our own. A person with excessive emphasis on air could fail to recognize that ideas and thoughts are not the only way to nurture the soul and reach great heights.

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the water signs in the astrological zodiac. Waves and tides in the ocean are a reflection of human emotions. Cyclical and also sometimes incontrollable, emotions and water share properties we can identify in our personalities. Water can be an essential substance to our survival, or can take the shape of a tsunami of devastating proportions. Likewise it has been proven that humans who are deprived of emotional contact could fall into deep states of depression and our incapability to control our emotions could have devastating consequences for us and for those around us. An astrological chart with strong water also speaks about a person with great sensitivity and a natural skill to empathize with others. Although not all people with strong water can be classified as emotionally intelligent, there is no doubt that the water element will mark the personality of anyone with this trait in his or her chart.

      Hello Deva

Air and fire are the weakest elements in your chart. Water is the strongest element, but earth remains strong. Your chart is currently suggesting transformation and closures in the domain of the earth element.

Hello Alexina, your natal chart shows that water is your strongest element, followed by air and earth whilst fire seems to be the weakest element. If you would like to know more about how to balance your elements feel free to ask more about it.
