Going Deeper Into Astrology

Updated on May 28, 2014

What's In A Horoscope Anyway?

I became interested in Astrology when I was about 25. Before that, I always looked at my horoscope in the paper and would laugh and wait to see if what it said would happen. Usually it didn't. The reason for this is because the newspaper horoscopes are just a general use horoscope for each sign of the Zodiac. To understand how it really works, you have to go a little deeper into it.

In this lens, I'm going to try to explain how all the items in a horoscope come together. It's all based on when and where you were born. A combination of the sign you were born under and which planets are in which houses. If you're scratching your head right now, I'll try it make it clearer here.

What Is Astrology Anyway?

According to Ada Rubin and June Rifkin, in the book, "The Complete Book Of Astrology", St. Martin's Griffin Edition: July 1998

Astrology is both an art form and a science-the "science of possibilities." It deals with the effects that the planets (including the Sun and the Moon) have on the human being. The interaction between planets and a person born at a given time has been set into a system that explains, with accuracy, his potentials. A birth chart, or horoscope, is a personal road map that provides clear-cut and effective explanations for the challenges a personality undertakes.

Zodiac Signs And The Houses They Rule

These are the twelve signs of the Zodiac and the houses they rule. I'll explain more about the houses later.

Aries - The Ram - Rules The First House

Taurus - The Bull - Rules The Second House

Gemini - The Twins - Rules The Third House

Cancer - The Crab - Rules The Fourth House

Leo - The Lion - Rules The Fifth House

Virgo - The Virgin - Rules The Sixth House

Libra - The Scales - Rules The Seventh House

Scorpio - The Scorpion - Rules The Eighth House

Sagittarius - The Centaur/Archer - Rules The Ninth House

Capricorn - The Goat - Rules The Tenth House

Aquarius - The Water Bearer - Rules The Eleventh House

Pisces - The Fish - Rules The Twelfth House

The Planets

These are the planets. They represent the personalities and potentials of each person. They all send out raw energy. We are affected by this energy by the way we choose to respond to it or not.

Sun

Moon

Mercury

Venus

Mars

Jupiter

Saturn

Uranus

Neptune

Pluto

The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars move through the horoscope in two years. They are called "personal planets." They have the most impact on a person.

Jupiter and Saturn are called "viewpoint planets." They take longer to move through the horoscope so they have an impact on certain decades in a person's life.

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are outer or "transpersonal" planets. They have more impact on generations rather than individuals.

The Houses And What They Mean

The houses represent different facets of life as well as a person's public and personal conditions. The first house begins about dawn, and each successive house is a two-hour period.

The Tenth House - Duties, responsibilities, personal status, father, prestige, career, reputation, and law.

Sun Signs And Basic Personality Traits

This is where I will give you a general overview of the personality traits of each sign.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)

This is the first sign of the Zodiac, it represents the beginning. They are generous, moral, and have physical courage. He also has physical strength and stamina. He is very direct and forceful. He is an initiator, but he doesn't always finish what he starts. He needs praise and encouragement to keep going. They lurk in the area of insecurity.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)

The Taurus person is conservative, a meticulous planner, and extremely artistic. They are honest and childlike. Consistency, dependability, selflessness, and generosity are also Taurus traits. They are also full of willpower, very self-disciplined, and tenacious. They are also very sexual.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

Geminis are generally intelligent. They are usually witty and articulate with a natural sense of timing. They are also experience seekers. Because they are a sign of duality, they usually have mental and manual dexterity, but they can also be inconsistent, superficial, irritable, and sometimes even irritating. They can also be obsessive - compulsive. Will occasionally "bite the hand that feeds them."

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

Cancer individuals are called "Moon Children" because they are very susceptible to the phases of the moon. They are sensitive, shy, and retiring by nature. They are also very psychic. They are also imaginative, dependable, conservative, and extremely loving. They have a great need to be loved.

LEO (July 23 - August 22)

Leo individuals are the epitome of masculinity. They represent energy and vital forces at the highest level. They are generous, loyal, dramatic, and outgoing. They are ruled by the Sun, so they naturally have a sunny disposition. They are often the object of envy to other people.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)

Virgo individuals are methodical, talented, and hardworking. They are also discriminating, tasteful, and reserved. Virgo is a very adaptable sign. They can examine things both concretely and abstractly. They generally see things from both sides.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 23)

Those born under this sign are generally happy, generous, realistic, charming, amiable, gracious, and affectionate. Because they are represented by the scales, they are always looking for a balance. She's also the world's best judge because she can see both sides of the coin. On the negative side, there is little spirituality in a Libra individual. They can easily overindulge in things.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 21)

Scorpio individuals see things as either black or white. There is no in between. They don't want to be liked, they want to be loved or hated. They are direct and dominant. They also have a lot of magnetism (think Charles Manson.) They are extremely ambitious, fearless, and self-sufficient. On the negative side, the word Vendetta is a great word for Scorpio. They will always get their revenge.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)

These individuals are usually very intuitive. They are also honest, versatile, optimistic, independent, and friendly. They will even think of casual acquaintances as friends. They also have an unconscious way to keep their psyche healthy. They don't have any inhibitions, and they don't hide their emotions. On the negative side, they have been known to lose their drive and they will start feeling claustrophobic and won't trust their own instincts.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)

These individuals are determined, single-minded, possess directed energy, and visualize. They will hold a goal close to their heart until it is realized. They are seldom seen as magnetic. Impressive, but not magnetic. On the negative side, they are self-centered and have huge egos.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)

Aquarians are often called the "humanistic" sign. They get along with just about everyone. They are imaginative, generous, and often inspiring. They are practical and always looking to improve the self. Knowledge should not be used for the self though, it should be used for the good of all mankind.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20)

Pisces individuals are the epitome of "still waters run deep." They are multifaceted and multitalented. They are also intuitive, imaginative, compassionate, and always think of others before themselves. They are also empathetic and people oriented. Their ego is expressed through other people. On the negative side, a Pisces individual will always keep you guessing. The two fish swimming in opposite directions can make them indecisive as well. Because they are so "other" oriented, they sometimes forget to take care of their own needs and wants.
