Before we go into this article, let me go ahead and say that this is not a rant on atheists themselves. I realize not all atheists act the same way. This is just an article on the idea of atheism itself, nothing more.
Self Creating Universe Debunked
Stephen Hawking once said, "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing." What Stephen does not take into consideration is that neither gravity, nor any other law of physics provides a way to which the universe can be created so spontaneously. Question; why do those laws of physics exist? You might also ask, how was there a god before the creation of the universe? For the sake of this argument I will save all scriptural based arguments until later on in the article.
A common argument used is that the reason that there is no god, or that he may not exist, is that there is no scientific evidence for him. But here is the problem. Why would there be scientific evidence? Here is the definition of science:
- "the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment."
These things would not even apply to the spiritual world. And since a creator god would by default have to exist before creation, what category would he fall into if science only refers to things of this universe? This would be like saying you can use your knowledge of Algebra to answer a question about American history. I can't use an algebraic equation to figure out what year the Civil War ended, just like how you cannot find scientific evidence for the spiritual. But that does not mean we cannot find a reason to believe.
Other Types of Evidence
When we see the vastness and complexity of the design of our world, how can you not think that there is more to it? Was this really all just a happy accident? For example, if the planet were closer or farther away from the sun, it would not be capable of supporting the life it currently does. If the elements in our atmosphere were different, almost everything would die.
Every effect must have a cause. That also goes for the forces that Stephen said was involved in the creation of the universe. Therefore something had to cause all of the universe to come into effect, namely something “un-caused”. Because without that, how would anything have been created? If we have a void with absolutely nothing, including no forces such as gravity, how can it be made into something?
What Created the Almighty?
How can such a powerful and intelligent being exist before the creation of the universe? Well here is where we will go to the scriptures to find the answer.
When we look in Genesis 1 1 we see that the Most High created the heavens and earth. This verse tells us that he was acting before time when he created the universe. We look in other verses in the New Testament and it tells us that he did this before time (1 Corinthians 2 7, 2 Timothy 1 9, Titus 1 2, and Jude 1 25). He created time and the universe. But how can he act before time?
He exists outside of time. We live in a universe of cause and effect. Without time, there is no cause and effect, and all things that could exist in a place that is bound by the rules of time would have no need of being caused. So when there is no time, there is no creation. Nor is there destruction. So what do we get? Eternity and oblivion, always existing or never having existed at all. Therefore, Elohim has no need of being created. The cause and effect of time would exist only for the natural realm. They do not apply to him. The boundaries set for the creation do not always bind the creator by the same laws, especially when it is one as powerful as him.
Psalm 19 1-4, Romans 1 18-22, and Ecclesiastes 3 11 teaches that his existence is clearly seen in the universe, nature, and our hearts. For atheists to deny the idea of faith being valid is as erroneous as what they call the truth. For all of this to be created out of coincidence and with no real reason behind it makes no sense whatsoever.
Thank you for reading. I also wrote an article that answers the omnipotence paradox. "If an all powerful being is able to perform any action, then it should be able to create a task that it is unable to perform." Is this true? See for yourself here: "Is The Most High All Powerful?"
Peace and blessings, and all praises to the Most High.
