MEL GIBSON--sinking low in Hollywood

Updated on October 18, 2011

Mel Gibson is "in the Grease" Again for Racist, Sexist Rant Taped by his Girl Friend

Mel Gibson, who was in the headlines three years ago for a drunken anti-Semitic rant to a policeman is in trouble again, this time for spewing a torrent of racist, sexist insults at his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva who tape recorded his tirade.

Leonard Pitts in the Miami Herald reported today that "Radar Online, a celebrity gossip website reported on July 1 that Gibson's estranged girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, had taped him in the throes of a profanely and profoundly hateful rant. He reportedly called Grigorieva, with whom he has an infant daughter, a 'whore,' a 'bitch' and a particularly vulgar term for the female pudendum that begins with 'c.'

"Then there is this pungent quote: 'You look like a f------ pig in heat and if you get raped by a pack of n------ it will be your fault.' You may think the most damning word in that quote is the N-word. Actually, it's just before that. After all, only animals hunt in packs.

"At this writing, it is nearly a week since the story broke and Gibson has yet to deny the authenticity of those words, even as he has come under fire from the NAACP, Gloria Allred and Jesse Jackson."

"Edge of Darkness" - A Mel Gibson Boycott Reminder:

Friends of Israel have not forgotten Mel Gibson's cowardly, racist tirade against the Jewish people and his grossly anti-semitic "Passion of the Christ" movie. Even Barbara Walters was offended enough to want to stop seeing his movies. Now Mel wants your patronage of his new movie "Edge of Darkness". Join the Boycott continues to urge a boycott of all Mel Gibson movies, an action which has been ongoing since 2006. see Walters Joins the Boycott and Mel's Explanation If you would like to comment on this subject please do so on our message board here. hat-tip: Linda 1/25/10

Drunk or sober, rational, tolerant and intelligent people don't even think, let alone say things like Gibson's remarks this week when he was arrested for DUI. Let's all boycott Gibson (This won't require much on my part because I can't remember the last Gibson movie I saw.) and stick with his rival actor and director George Clooney who actually can act and direct.

Clooney and Gibson remind me of two Hollywood rivals of yesteryear, Burt Lancaster and Charlton Heston. Lancaster was the real deal, a former circus trapeze performer who became a serious actor nominated four times for a best actor academy awards ("From Hear to Eternity," "Birdman of Alcatraz," "Atlantic City" and "Elmer Gantry" for which he won.) Heston looked good in a toga or loin cloth and was known for Hollywood schlockbusters like "Ten Commandments" and "Caesar and Cleopatra." Of course he went on the head up the National Rifle Association and made a pitiful cameo appearance in "Bowling for Columbine." Like Gibson, Charlton Heston was a right wingnut, while Burt Lancaster was a liberal activist as is Clooney. [To preserve at least a shred of objectivity I'm compelled to note that Charlton Heston also won a Best Actor Academy award for his role in what else a Hollywood blockbuster, "Ben Hur." ]

So, while we're at it, lets boycott Charlton Heston AND Mel Gibson!

Here's a start on some picket signs:

Mel is Dead Meat! (Showbizwise)

Mel! Mel! Who Can Stand the Smell?

I prefer termites to anti-Semites! Boycott Mel!

Jesus Freaks Okay but not Anti-Semites! Boycott Smell Gibson!

In case you think this would be overkill for poor Mel, bear in mind that plenty of people have lost their jobs for saying much less offensive things than Gibson's drunken, anti-semitic, male chauvinist outburst. For example:

Larry Summers recently lost his job as president of Harvard for stating some off-the-cuff, non-pc opinions about why more women don't succeed in science;

Trent Lott was forced out as House majority leader after making a toast at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party indicating we wouldn't have had all these problems if Thrumond's 1948 segregationist Dixiecrat party bid for the Presidency had been successful. As I recall Lott was forced out in a couple of weeks.;

Nixon's Secretary of Agriculture, Earl Butz, who was known his frequent remarks offensive to Catholics and minorities was forced to resign for saying to reporters on Air Force One, "I'll tell you what coloreds want--a tight pussy, loose shoes and a warm place to shit." Most newspapers didn't print his remark. One bowdlerized it to Butz said "it is the desire of black Americans to have good sex, comfortable shoes and a warm place to go to the bathroom.";

More than one professional athletic coach, manager, owner, and television broadcaster has lost his or her job or been pilloried for making racist public comments much less extreme than Gibson's diatribe. One example called to my attention by a good friend is Howard Cosell being dumped in 1983 as commentator on Monday Night Football after commenting on a long run by Alvin Garrett an African American receiver, "Look at that little monkey run!" The fact that Cosell apparently been drinking before the game didn't get him a pass. Jimmy the Greek Snyder was fired over a comment about the "genetic advantage of black athletes."; and

High school science teachers are regularly pilloried by the religious right for teaching evolution. Others are criticized for teaching creationism or intelligent design.

Nevertheless, Gibson is not likely to be replaced soon by Hollywood because the moguls have a big investment in him that can't easily be duplicated. That's why a boycott would be required to put him out of business.

MORE ON MEL GIBSON

According to Wikipedia, Mel has publicly condemned embryonic stem cell research, and the ending of Terry Schiavo's life, but he supports capital punishment. He believes God is pointing his path--he said that the Holy Ghost made "The Passion of the Christ" through him, "I was only the traffic director." On the other hand, Gibson joined others in Hollywood in opposing the Iraq war. In a 1995 Playboy interview, he said someone was telling Bill Clinton what to do. Bill Clinton and other Rhodes Scholars are part of a "stealth" trend of Rhodes Scholars becoming politicians who are striving for a new world order, a new form of Marxism. [Man, that's deep!] Wikipedia reported that Gibson has been a longtime alcoholic, drug abuser and sufferer from manic-depression. He deserves our sympathy on those counts.

      Mel Gibson was once a major star in the black community he shared the stage with ARNOLD,STALLONE,SEGAL and BRUCE LEE. Because of the MAD MAX movies. Now Mel will never recieve another dollar from our community. To a man with over 900 million dollars I doubt that this fact will even phaze Mel. Sad but true for every one MEL GIBSON there are dozens more like him in HOLLYWOOD who are smart enough to watch their tongue and behavior in public. Racism is real and it is hear to stay no matter how politically correct we are.

      TMZ has obtained Mel Gibson's sworn declaration in the custody war with Oksana Grigorieva, in which Mel admits slapping Oksana because he says she was so hysterical she was endangering the baby ... but he denies hitting her.

      Mel is referring to the explosive argument between the two on the night of January 6, 2010, which triggered the L.A. County Sheriff's Department domestic violence investigation. Oksana claims Mel punched her in the temple and in the mouth, knocking out two teeth.

      That's a pretty dumb comment. All Americans aren't the same. I'm sorry you didn't like the cartoon. It caricatures the historic Roman Catholic teaching that Jews killed Christ which fueled anti-Semitism among Catholics for years. More recently the church has backed away from this inflammatory line and established much better relationship with Judaism.

      LOS ANGELES — Mel Gibson’s recorded rants, now part of a domestic violence investigation here, are taking a toll where it can hurt an aging action star the most: among foreign film buyers.

      Gibson is in such disgrace today that it’s hard to fathom all the fuss he and his biblical epic engendered back then. The commotion began with the revelation that his father, Hutton, was a prominent and vociferous Holocaust denier and that both father and son were proselytizers for a splinter sect of Roman Catholicism that rejected the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, including the lifting of the “Christ-killers” libel from the Jews. Jewish leaders and writers understandably worried that “The Passion” might be as anti-Semitic as the Passion plays of old.

      Mel Gibson was raised in a home where his father raised him on a steady diet of Anti-Semitism.

      Mels movies reflect an approval of the evil perpetrated by the Christian Church against the indigenous people of the Americas as well as the death and holocaust of Jews worldwide.

      I'm waiting for the movie that shows black people to be evil because typically "White Christianity" which is a denomination unto itself subscribes to a doctrine of "white is rightism." Incidentally "white Christianity" is the denomination that Mel Gibson and others like him belong to.

      Mel Gibson is a bigot of the highest caliber and his movies reflect his true sentiments and seek to bolster the historic racists evil perpetrated by the "white Christian Church."

      I don't care much about celebrities any direction at all, but Mel does draw notice. Frankly I did a little research after "The Passion" and found he's part of a breakaway sect from the Catholic Church, so his belief system could hardly be described as mainstream.

      This latest foray into anti-semitism indicates the apple didn't fall far off his father's anti-semitic holocaust-denying tree.

      He's hardly the most evil man ever; all of us are sinners. And he has every right to believe and voice his opinions so long as they don't promote violence against others. He may hate anyone he wishes.

      Bush is much worse in my opinion, an amoral imbecile in a position to do a lot of damage.

      However that said, Gibson's history of drunken driving is enough to thoroughly piss me off. What an utter lack of concern for the safety of others - that alone is a good reason to lose whatever respect I may have ever had for him as a person.

      Thanks for your comment. I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise's off-screen persona. But I've enjoyed several of his films. I don't find his off-screen antics as offensive as those of Mel Gibson. He proved he lacked good judgment when he split with Nicole Kidman! But he is a competent actor. I haven't really followed the events that led to Redstone dumping him other than his belief in scientology and his over-the-top remarks on ritalin and Brooke Sheilds. He's not the first person to express reservations about current trends in psychiatry and over-prescription of ritalin for children. I didn't follow the story closely enough to express an opinion on his dispute with his studio.

      I too hope Mel gets treatment for his longstanding alcoholism. It he doesn't he won't live to a ripe old age. For him that's his most serious problem.

      I'ts clearly a problem for Mel. He admitted it and apologised. Anti-semitism has increased around the world due to Israel's blunders in Palestine and its brutal bombing and invasion of Lebanon. Mel belongs to an extremist Roman Catholic sect that is not recognized by the Pope. Prejudice against Blacks and Hispanics receive a lot of attention. Christians are in the majority who elected the President of the U.S. They don't experience discrimination as minority groups do.

      BTW, I didn't see "The Passion of the Christ." I was never a Mel Gibson fan. He is talented at producing and acting in Hollywood schlockbuster movies that haven't appealed to me since I was in high school.

      For those that stopped being a fan of Mel's b/c of "The Passion", I think that you may be a little prejudice too. We hear so much about being anti-Semitic... but that's a small population! Why is it that prejudice concerning larger populations, such as Christians, Blacks, Hispanics, don't receive the same attention?

      Everyone is biased against someone or something... you don't have to like everyone, just respect their right to live equally to yourself.

      For all those who turned away from Mel after "The Passion", maybe you're a little anti-Christian! Think of all the "Jewish-themed" movies produced from Hollywood over the last 50 years... If "Jew-hating" was such a problem, I doubt so many people would have paid to see all those films.

      I hope,Mel goes to AAA... I think the DUI is a bigger problem than what you say drunk.

      Gibson's remarks were directed at Jews not at Israel. Plenty of people have been criticising Israel's brutal and counter-productive invasion of Lebanon without being accused of anti-Semitism. Gibson has a history of anti-semitic, homophobic and sexist remarks. Belatedly, he's now being called on it. Some joker suggested a public circumcision as a step in his atonement. Not a bad idea. Maybe they should use a meat axe.

      Why in the world would I like to boycot Mel? How is it possible that in America we can critizise from

If I said, for example, that the wars in the middle east right now are because of the US foreign policies, am I going to be accused of anti-Christian? Of course not. Driving drunk is bad. It has extreme potential to hurt people and is clearly irresponsible. He should accept the full punishment of the law.

      The off color comments or poor choice of words is letting him off too easily. This is a bad person who has an incredible media reach that has caused significant damage. Apologies and taking responsibility for his words is too little. I'm dissappointed in the American attitude of accepting and indulging flawed racists. I don't know of a fitting punishment for this crime.
