Be Still for the Presence of the Lord

Updated on May 7, 2011

Again and again and even again God tells us in His Word to be still. "Be still and know that I am God'. Sounds pretty straight forward right? Sure. Even sounds appealing- the idea of being rooted in peace and the daily stresses and worries being gently washed away. Bliss. We all look forward to the times when we are stilled before God. When we know He is here with us, right in the room next to us, above us, below us- and all around us. The perfectly peaceful cushioning of God. The gentle refuge from the storms or even rain showers of everyday life. God wills to sweep us up in His safe, warm and ever- present arms. Indeed we are encircled by God's safe protective arms each day and in each moment. Gives us a new perspective of the wars and troubles of everyday life doesn't it?

So then life is beautiful in the safe and sound swaddling God has wrapped us in before holding us close to His heart in sheer immeasurable love...not so, and why? Because we are not the perfect creatures we will one day be. We are just learning to trust our faithful Father right now, and yes we do long to be still before our God because He provides us with the most soul sweetening peace and moving solace we can know. Because we are still learning to be still and know that God is more powerful than us- more powerful than we can ever imagine!!!

"The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still" Exod 14:14

Oh beloved children of the Lord, lay down your troubles at His feet and find rest there. Indeed God has never given you more than you can handle- unless you've tried to handle it yourself! Children if you had as much mercy on yourselves as God does, you would not know worry.

It's amazing that it is actually the worries of everyday life, the burdens, times spent fretting and planning our own redeeming that gets in the way of us being still and knowing the peace that passes all understanding. We simply cannot still our frantically worried hearts to wait upon the Lord to redeem and renew us. God wants to still us for our own good! The very thing which God tells us to be still before Him for is that which drives us away from him in the fear of being self[in]sufficient. When was our well- being placed solely upon our own shoulders? When did life become a circus of events and burdens to prove ourselves? We are not our own! We have been bought at a price! What kind of owner do we think God is? Is He careless with his precious sheep- or is He the kind of loving devoted Shepherd who would go after even one who would leave the safety of His inpenetrable fold?? Cast all your burdens on the Lord because He cares for you! But be still first. When did you ever throw a prayer to the wind that gave you peace and contentment? These kind of prayers certainly don't nourish my soul in the way that being still and renewed before the Lord does.

Be still and know the magnificence of the Lord: God is all things!!!

So being still is what we are told to do. But who are you to be still before? The answer is in this question. Who does God say He is?

  • “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger.” John 6:35

God is our sustainer. His provision for His children knows no limits. He will never let us go without what we need. Not what we think we need, but what He alone knows we need.

  • “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12

He guides us in paths of righteousness . He keeps us from spiritual harm and has saved us from the eternal ruin that by rights all should be condemned to. If He will take this from us, what else will He not take from us??? Indeed He has not only taken our evil comeuppance from us but has promised us eternal life. Such sovereign goodness...

  • “I am the gate; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” John 10:9

Jesus has became the gate through which sinners like all of us can enter and come to know the Father. It is by God's grace in giving His Son Jesus to be an atonement for our sins, that we can receive salvation. There is no other means but by the repentance from sins and confessing Christ as Lord, that we can be forgiven and justified before God. We are wretched by nature, born sinful. Christ is our redeemer. In Christ we are set free of the bondage of our worldly evil desires.

  • “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for His sheep.” John 10:11

Christ is the good Shepherd- and what does a shepherd do? He cares for His flock and leads them with diligence. However, we have not just any shepherd- but the Son of God! His willingness and faithfulness in caring for us is profound in it's implications. God is omniscient so He already knows everything we will ever need, and did before He made the world and began time! If we have the all- knowing God infinitely anticipating our every need and the same all- powerful God willing to care for us and able to do so without limit- then what good can we justifiably fear we will go without in life?? What distrust towards God because of our afflictions can we vindicate?

The All- powerful, all- knowing, always present God knew in advance we would fall into sin and would disobey His laws so before the beginning of time He anticipated our need for redemption. He loved us with an eternal, immeasurable love and it was in His power to save us. So He sent His only Son- the Good Shepherd- to lay His life down as a blood sacrifice for our sins that we might be saved and know the eternal joy of fellowship with our Father. Oh what scandalous grace, that all this should be done for us sinners...

  • “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even though he dies.” John 11:25

Here Jesus tells us that He is the resurrection of the dead and the life of the living. God has given us the opportunity of life through Jesus and lifts us out of death in transgression to do this. Further, though we may die a physical death we will still live on in eternity with God knowing the unimaginable greatness of being at one with God in His Glory. This is often described as Christ overcoming the power of death by giving life everlasting to those who will come to Him- only possible because He has been the sacrifice to make this possible.

  • “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” John 14:6

Jesus is the one and only way to God. He is the only name by which we can be saved. There is no work we can do that will give us any chance at salvation, it all hangs on us believing that Jesus died for our sins and confessing Him as Lord. God in His unfailing compassion has given us His Son to be the Way to eternal life with Him. He also is the Truth, the irrefutable revelation if what is. When Jesus says 'I am...the truth', the truth ceases to be a thing. It is now alive in the character of God. God is the Truth- This statement has so much power and gravity. The Truth is God- The Truth is alive. The almighty, unblemished weapon. God is to be feared. He is the Truth. The Truth does not come from us- we cannot speak the Truth without God. What we humans recognise as truth is only a thing, a word, a concept- it is worthless!!! Utterly meaningless!!The Truth is the life- force of God and we can speak it only with Him in us.

Christ is life and life everlasting. It is His life- giving Spirit which draws us out of transgression and rescues us from condemnation. His Spirit in us reconciles us to God and "Amazing Grace!"- we can feel Him with us and know that we are saved by the name of Life- and His name is Christ!

  • “I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener.” John 15:1

Christ refers to Himself here as the True Vine. It is from the vine that fruit comes. If Christ is the True Vine then this implies that true fruit can come only from Him. God does call us to bare fruit and indeed tells us of the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self- control.) How can one produce the fruits of the Spirit (i.e. divine fruits) apart from God? We cannot and this is why Christ urges us to remain in Him so that He will remain in us. Jesus further explains that the Father is the gardener. God alone has the divine vision to see the parts of the vine that do not bear fruit and in His divine providence He cuts them off. God alone cultivates spiritual fruit in His children and we are fruitless and Spiritual impoverished outwith the vine that is Jesus, His Son.

  • "Before Abraham was I am" John 8:58

He is eternal and unchanging. We can't even fathom His eternity!

See here's the thing; the storms in life terrify us. They would- we're tiny! But God is not. Our problems are only big if our God is small. A preacher I once saw shared his feelings on the recession. He said he that we ought not to complain or fret when we get to the check- out at the store and are discouraged by increased prices- but instead that we ought to thank God because we know He will give us the means we need to survive. Our God does provide. Our God is big. We are small and we need to not confuse God's immeasurable strength and power which passes all understanding with our own weakness and narrow vision. Have you ever been in a situation where you just couldn't see a way out or a means of deliverance only to be redeemed in the most unlikely way by the unfailing faithfulness of the grace if God..? our God saves!! Call upon Him!

"And He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea,
Peace, be still.
And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm"
(Mark 4:39)

Do you think amidst the destructive storm where survival was not a hope or consideration, that the disciples could have seen this coming...?

Now this, THIS IS THE GOD YOU SHOULD BE STILL BEFORE!!!

"BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD"

Child of God you are safe in His hands

Be still for the presence of the LORD

Be still, for the presence of the Lord,

The Holy One is here.

Come, bow before Him now,

With reverence and fear.

In Him no sin is found,

We stand on holy ground.

Be still, for the presence of the Lord,

The Holy One is here.

Be still, for the glory of the Lord,

Is shining all around.

He burns with holy fire,

With splendor He is crowned.

How awesome is the sight,

Our radiant King of light!

Be still, for the glory of the Lord,

Is shining all around.

Be still, for the power of the Lord,

Is moving in this place.

He comes to cleanse and heal,

To minister His grace.

No work too hard for Him,

In faith receive from Him.

Be still, for the power of the Lord,

Is moving in this place.

You will Come to know rest

What I love about this or should I say, what I love about the God in you. I can tell that you feel what you write. I do not want just information, I want to get intimate with the writer when I read what they are saying. I felt a person who knows Christ. Great Hub I am glad the Lord lead me to you.
