Be a Shining Star

Updated on February 28, 2012

Shine for God

Commonly associated with fortune and fame we hear the word “star”; rising star, shooting star, shining star, rock star, movie star, but what does it really mean. Well, in the entertainment industry it simply means a person who stands out and shines brighter than others in the business. This can be applied to Christianity as well. You most likely will not find fortune and fame just because of your faith; however, there are a few Christian movie stars, and rock stars whom God has used in powerful ways, but that isn’t exactly what I’m talking about.

Philippians 2:14-16a says “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life”. We can be as shining stars to the world just be being obedient to the word of God. Earlier in this same exhortation by the apostle Paul, he tells us that Christ was obedient even to the point of death on a cross. Christ was our blameless, faultless example. Think about this. There have been music stars, and movie stars in the past that some of us have never heard of, but they were stars in their time. When the latest Indiana Jones movie hit the theaters, most of the teenagers at the theater didn’t even know who Harrison Ford was. On the other hand, Jesus Christ has been written about and talked about for over two-thousand years. We hear some talk of what Jesus is doing today, but what is mentioned most often is the fact that He lived a faultless life and sacrificed himself for us willingly. How many of us would be willing to die for a friend or family member? How many of us would be willing to die for someone we’ve never even met? Probably not too many of us would be willing. The good news is, God isn’t asking us to die, He’s asking us to live for Him as shining examples to this morally corrupt generation.

Some of you may be asking “where do I find the strength and courage to be a shining star?” The answer is found in James 4:7-10 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up”. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 says “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong”. God will give us the strength and courage we need if we are willing to give Him full control to use us in whatever way He chooses. All we have to do is be willing to do God’s will, and be joyfully obedient when God asks us to do something for Him, then we will be “Shining Stars”.
