10 Bible Verses For Bad Days - Inspiration and Encouragement From Scripture

Updated on November 26, 2012

For Everything, A Season

We know from the Book of Ecclesiastes (or The Byrds song, take your pick) that “there is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens.” (Eccl 3:1). We are told that there is both a “time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance” (Eccl 3:4). I know that most of us can see the truth in this statement. That most of our lives have included mourning, laughing, dancing, and weeping, tears and smiles, pain and triumph.

I also know that some of those weeping days look so dark you don’t believe you’ll laugh again. That there are days when words like these would make you want to laugh in frustration, instead of saving your laughter for a day of joy. Trust me I’ve been there. I’ve had days where the darkness looms so big that I wonder if I’ll ever see the light at the end of the tunnel again. I’ve had depression stare me in the face, and had moments of crippling anxiety. I’ve had times where the events in life lead me to anger, and make me angry with God for allowing these difficult times to happen. I’ve had days where I told myself that it was my fault – that if I truly believed in God, I wouldn’t let myself despair.

Somewhere along the line however, I learned not to be angry with God for events in my life, or let my struggle with mental illness separate us. Instead I try to pray my way through the pain, read the Bible, and find encouragement through His Word and His Love. These are some of the Scripture verses that inspire me.

“We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” (Rom. 8:28)

“Justice will bring about peace; right will produce calm and security.” (Is. 32:17)

“Lord, have pity on us, for you we wait. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of trouble.” (Is. 33:2)

“Heal me, Lord, that I may be healed; save me, that I may be saved, for it is you whom I praise.” (Jer. 17:14)

“Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mt. 11:28)

“You need endurance to do the will of God, and receive what he has promised.” (Heb 10:36)

“Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5: 6-7)

Please note: I am not a medical or mental health professional, nor do I claim expert advice for individuals suffering from depression, anxiety and other mental illness. I offer these verses as encouragement for individuals who are having a bad day(s). Praying with these verses should not replace medical treatment or professional advice for those experiencing depression or other mental illness.

Thank you teaches, janshares, kelleyward and kasman!

Teaches - That is a great verse. The psalms are always such a great source of inspiration and encouragement.

Janshares - I've always really enjoyed the writingin Matthew, and the reminder not to be anxious is definitely an important, if difficult, one!

Kelleyward - I will have to check that out. Who is it by?

Kasman - I will definitely have to take a look at Micah. I think that has been one of the neglected books in my Bible!

Absolutely uplifting. A few of those I have memorized and have helped through some crazy situations. A great one also that's not on this list is Micah 7:8-10. Very useful hub for anyone needing encouragement and voting up!

Thanks for sharing this. I'm bookmarking for future use. I read the power of a praying parent, wife, woman and love the way she combines scripture with prayer. Voted up and useful. Kelley

ElleBee, this is a lovely hub of encouragement and hope that during any crisis, we can look to the Word for comfort and relief. Thank you for this hub. My favorites during bad days are: Matthew 6:25-34 (have no anxiety), Philippians 4:6-7 (don't be afraid, ask for what you need, giving thanks), and I Thessalonians 5:17 ("pray constantly"). Voted up and awesome.
