Biblical Principles of Fear
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”— C.S. Lewis
What is fear?
Fear is a response induced by a threat or a motivation to run from danger. Fear can make us run and find safety, or it can make us freeze and not move.
In today’s world there are many problems in the world that produce fear in our lives. There are wars, terrorism threats, economical meltdowns, unstable world economies, and many other things that are happening in our lives that causes fear in the lives of all of us.
Fear leads to stressors in our lives which ultimately leads to emotional breakdowns and physical health problems. If we do not take control of these fears and learn how to deal with them the physical health problems like cardio vascular problems, emotional problems, insomnia issues, blood pressure problems, psychological issues like depression or maybe even suicidal thoughts will enter in to your mind and body and cause severe damage to our bodies.
Good Fear in our lives.
There are some situations where fear is good. For some of us when we step out of our comfort zone we walk into the area that is uncomfortable for us which tends to allow fear to enter our emotions. This fear is good because it makes us move from a place of comfort to the unknown which can lead to something that will benefit us.
Fear also can keep us alive. We may feel in dangers or a threat against our life and fear enters our body and it causes us to seek help or it can cause us to go and seek shelter.
Then there is also The Fear of God. For someone that does not believe in God there is the fear of God’s judgment and possible eternal death. But for the believer in Christ "The Fear of God" means reverence of God or the awe of his power. This is good feeling, where we want to totally surrender ourselves to the God that has all power and is the Creator of everything. Furthermore, fear of the Lord leads to life, rest, peace, and contentment (" Fear of the Lord leads to life, bringing security and protection from harm. Proverbs 19:23"). It is the fountain of life ("Fear of the Lord is a life-giving fountain; it offers escape from the snares of death. Proverbs 14:27") and provides a security and a place of safety for us (" Those who fear the Lord are secure; he will be a refuge for their children. Proverbs 14:26").
Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.
All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom.
Praise him forever!
Spirit of Fear
The spirit of fear is not from God our Father, God tells us to “Fear not”. But with what is happening in the world around us it can be a scary place right now on earth. With everything happening it feels like the whole world is a big powder keg ready to explode. If you watch any of the news stations on television or read any newspaper or magazine you can consumed with fear. But you have to take control of your fear emotion and step back and take a deep breath and realize that you cannot save the world and fix all situations or problem how big or how small they might be. If we do let this fear consume our lives we will miss all the good that is out there in the world for us from God our Father. That is why we should “Fear Not” and not let the "Spirit of Fear" enter our lives.
As Christians we should set the example for others and show how God is in control and leave all things to him to manage and not carry the fears of the world on our shoulders. As a Christian it is good to know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and we have the power of the Holy Spirit on our side to take care of all our needs. And knowing that we are saved through the blood of Jesus once we die we can look forward to eternal life in Heaven and be reunited with our loved ones that have passed on from this world to heaven and is waiting for us. Knowing this there is no need to fear.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
Does fear have control over you?
Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
Faith Over Fear
If we are true Christians we cannot live in fear and have faith also, because the two of them cannot exist together. Having faith is the belief that God is always working behind the scenes in our lives for the benefit of us even though we cannot see him doing this physically we know through faith that this is being done. We also know that while God is working in our lives we as Christians do know that he does all things for good and nothing to hurt us.
How do we get this faith you ask? The Bible states in Romans 10:7 “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God". As Christians we should be in the word daily meditating on the scriptures, he wants us to be in constant communication with him through prayer, he also wants us to be filled with the Holy Spirit and have the gift of Faith. As we walk daily with God our faith will grow by seeing him working in our lives and in the lives around us.
By giving our total life to God and our faith continues to grow daily the fear that consumed our lives will be gone.
Worry is the sin of distrusting the promise and providence of God, and yet it is a sin that Christians commit perhaps more frequently than any other— John MacArthur
The Armor of God
are weak Satan uses fear against us by planting bad thoughts in our minds. When we start thinking the “What If” questions that keep you from sleeping at night or causes the butterflies to start churning around in your stomach this is the work of the devil. Worry and fear is sin and this kind of fear is caused by Satan himself. Little voices that you hear in your subconscious that causes you to start second guessing things and plants these “what if’s” questions in your mind is all work by the demons that Satan has sent your way.
The Good news is that God has given us the Holy Spirit and Armor of God which is the Shield of Faith and the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God the Bible. Using these weapons that God has given us the devil has no power over us.
Jesus died so that we may live without fear.
For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had[a] the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. Hebrews 2:14-15 NLT
