Do Binaural Beats Make You Smarter? Let's Just Say "I'm Addicted!"

Updated on June 19, 2008

I'd just started meditating on a regular basis, and I wanted something to help control the seemingly endless chatter that was going on inside my brain. After doing some research I ran across an article in the PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) that would change my life.

Scans of Monks' Brains Show Meditation Alters Structure, Functioning centered around a concept called neuroplasticity - a technical term that Webster's New World Dictionary describes as "The brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life." In other words, your brain can re-create itself based on various experiences.

Kind of like your body gets stronger if you lift weights. Or your French gets better if you practice it.

In the article, scientists compared the brain waves of novice meditators to Buddhist monks who had clocked more than 10,000 hours of meditation. During the experiment it was noted that the monks had a noticeably higher increase of gamma brain waves. Gamma waves control consciousness and perception. They help pull various bits of information together to help the brain see the 'larger picture.'

Though the monks and novices in the experiment focused on compassion, I still found the whole gamma wave aspect very interesting. So I began looking for ways that I could re-create that kind of experience.

The Tibetan Monk Experience on CD

I did a lot of research into gamma waves and found that certain CD's containing binaural beats could supposedly take ones brain into gamma land. After searching through Amazon, I found Dr. Jeffrey Thompson's Gamma Meditation System CD.

The first CD was said to lead you into a state of enhanced perception and deep meditation. CD number two - the Hypergamma Meditation System - is linked with enhanced focus. At only $20, I took the plunge.

Go Gamma Gamma!

The first time I tried the Gamma Meditation System I was taken into a mental world of colors and vividness that I've never experienced in real life. My meditations were filled with the most surreal visions.

They were incredibly bright and light filled. My dreams that night were of the same quality. It was like my brain went from black and white to color in one swoop. I was absolutely amazed at the rapid transformation.

I felt myself smiling more when I was out - which can sometimes be a little difficult to do when you're navigating the streets of New York City day in and day out. After dropping my daughter off at school I found myself rushing home to meditate. It was very comforting.

After the first week the mental rush began to tone down slightly.

That's when I started using CD #2. Hypergamma was far more intense. In hypergamma I felt intuitive. I felt my third eye tingling all the time.

And when I worked, I WORKED.

When I sat down to write I felt like my brain was intertwined to a thousand more. There was a sense of understanding... of knowing just what needed to be said. When my words flowed, it felt like I was sticking my hand into the smoothest, warmest stream of water you can possibly imagine.

During this time I started brainstorming like crazy. I was working till 4am and getting up at 9am, fully refreshed. I truly began to see connections that had previously eluded me. And boy did it feel empowering.

Does it Still Work Today?

I still listen to the Hypergamma CD several times a week. Whenever I listen to it I still feel like my brain is going through an awakening. Almost like the sun is rising in my mind.

I have developed new ideas and techniques that have increased my productivity by at least 50%. Projects that had previously stumped me are now done. When I read books, I see and know the answers I need almost instantly.

My intuitive sense has sharpened dramatically as well.

I wouldn't call myself psychic. But I do find that I'm 'knowing' lots of little bits of information throughout the day.

For example, I was cutting and pasting some information from a website, when I intuitively realized that I using the wrong information. I kept going anyway. Sure enough after I'd cut and pasted all the wrong information, I realized it was all a mistake. My intuition was right after all.

And that's the part I have to master - when to listen and not automatically override the less demanding voice. But it's interesting to see how these instances make themselves known more and more.

What About Other Binaural Beat CD's?

Since I started with Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, I decided to try a few other of his CDs. He has a Theta Meditation System, a Delta Sleep System, and many others.

I can't say anything negative about the others. But I personally prefer the Gamma Meditation System above all others.

So if you've ever had even an itch of curiosity about binaural beats or brain enhancement, I would highly recommend his work.

wow, it seems like some jesus freak has to shove their viewpoint in to nearly every topic on a blog/comment pages. Then there is someone who has to argue with them. JUST STAY ON THE TOPIC. GOD DAMN.

To forserious: you all right! there is no god! There are different kinds of energies and sh*t load of quantum physics out there in the universe that we all are to find out. Only then we will understand how everything was created from the universe to human being! Great article! peace

Forserious I respect what you believe.

I have no argument against what you are saying. Let's just agree to disagree. Jesus loves you.

What the heck are you talking about jesus defeated death and hell? People die all the time in horrific ways, and if he defeated hell what are you afraid of then?

Also, he didn't die for your sins, he was crucified for being different.

and you can't say the bible says so, it was written by man

also, man created god in his image, not the other way around.

terced ojos you are seriously confused as to what reality is. first off answer me this...if, back in the days when the bible was being written (by man, not god), people really thought that god was in the sky, the heavens, literally on the clouds, to an extent to which it was preached as dogma, then how come people continue to believe in god when we know that clouds are nothing more than water droplets and that above and around them is, a mixture of gas that changes as you get higher and higher.

And Jesus never said he was the son of god, never ever. and in those days calling someone the son of god was just another way of saying they were enlightened, that they had a very new and wonderful way of looking at the world and life.

So, thinking about the first part and knowing the last part, do you still continue to convince yourself that Christianity is worth it?

Respectfully george. I appreciate your opinion. I will pray for you george that should you ever find yourself in a place that you know to be hell;a realm a paradigm as you call it. I will ask that you remember that Jesus defeated death and hell.

      Freedom is in your mouth.

      Do not forget.

In Jesus's name George. In Jesus's name. Call his name George and he'll come for you.

what has ephesians and the bible got to do with any of this

You need to get into quantum physics and see that you are in a paradigm that makes sense to you but that is only in your universe:

See hugh everetts many world theories" In other words the only psychosis is the one you are experiencing yourself"

Other wise you are no better than the inquistion looking for more inocent victims who,s only crime was to raise their conciousness free of institutions:

I cant believe that people like you still exsist in 2010

Opening your mind is akin to opening pandoras box.

You mind is the center of your spiritual self; your soul if you will and Ephesians 6:12 NKJV " for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."

This scripture speaks directly to what meditation really opens you up to.

If your meditation is not on Jesus Christ you may well find yourself the victim of demonic Psychosis.

You will find that you can't sleep; you're unable to stop a tsunami of thoughts from entering your mind. You might begin to hallucinate. Crazy mood swings. Intense sexual urges accompanied by hot and cold night sweats.

This stuff has very real spiritual consequences associated with it.

      Watch out now.

I've used holosync a bit too, and also done traditional buddhist meditation. Both are excellent tools for personal development and awareness.

I think with binaurals the effect is amplified if you apply a normal meditation procedure at the same time, such as focus on the breath or a mantra or bodily sensations.

      Makes it so much stronger.

Eh. It kind of works, needs some tuning.

Think of it as forcing the brain to merge patterns of color into one eye and then mimicking it in a brain pattern.

Binaural beats software are just one piece of the puzzle it's a tool for the mind to be use with other tools,be careful with binaural beats, be careful with your soul, keep researching,

keep comparing statements, never assume there are no risks,

Now to answer your question "Do binaural beats make you smarter" my answer is no! but wanting to be smarter has made you smarter, seeking something always leads to finding something, you wanted improvement, that was the ACTIVE FORCE!that was UTILIZING FACTOR guiding and GIVING MEANING and PURPOSE to the binaural beat!God is the creator and by far, more effective than any primitive unstable tool rediscovered by doctors and monks!Facing that LORD is true and stable improvement!
