Black Eyed Kids: Sinister Threat Or Legend? One Interesting Theory

Updated on March 19, 2013

Sinister Threat Or Myth: Black Eyed Kids

Flight or fight kicks in overdrive in a desolated area in the remote part of town. It is night, dusk has fallen and the remoteness of the area already has your senses on high alert. You walk briskly to your car leaving pavement behind with every step. The only lighting is the street lamps that flicker on and off. Out of nowhere 2 young children approach your vehicle, dressed normally for their age and seemingly innocent you almost feel relief at the site of another human. Yet something just isn't quite right and for some reason you feel the onset of panic. And then you realize there is something wrong with these children........ their eyes are as black as coal.

Seems like something right out of a horror movie right? Maybe Children Of The Corn or some freaky ass Steven King novel? Not Quite. This is the typical introduction to something known as Black Eyed Kids (BEKs).

BEK Sightings

They appear out of no where. Seemingly harmless until you are in close enough proximity to feel the absolute dread and terror they instill in their victims. BEKs are usually children between the ages of 7 and 17. They are often times dressed normally but occasionally have been encountered in dress from a time long gone. Pleasant enough at first, they asked to be let in, to use the phone or a bathroom saying they are lost and in trouble. They are intimidating and pushy when refused entrance. There eyes are troubling --completely black-- not a speck of white to be seen. Witnesses have claimed to feel sheer panic and fear when in their presence. Their voices are said to be hypnotic and many witnesses who have encountered these sinister kids swear that they've had to actively resist the temptation to do their bidding.

I found this fascinating encounter, amongst many other stories, of BEK's on Jason Offutt's Blog (the encounter in it's entirety can be read there as I wouldn't want to take the entire blog!):

It was warm the night Carris Holdsworth walked to her apartment from a friend’s house in Lisburn, a city of 71,465 in Northern Ireland near Belfast.

Then 18-year-old Holdsworth didn’t know terror waited for her at home.

“It was about 10:45,” she said of that night in 2009. “I was only 18 and had a small flat in a very rough part of the neighborhood. That’s why it unsettled me when I saw two boys standing in my small patch of grass which I called my yard.”

The boys one about 16 years old the other 13 or 14, stood with their backs to Holdsworth.

“I felt raw fear when I laid eyes on them,” she said.

Holdsworth stopped a few yards from them, a fist in her handbag wrapped around a tin of pepper spray.

“I was ready to defend myself if one of them made any sudden movements,” she said.

But they didn't. They seemed to know what she was thinking.

“No need for that,” the older one spoke, calmly and maturely. “We just want to borrow your phone, miss.”

Her knuckles began to turn white as her grip tightened on the pepper spray.

“They looked like any other teenager around these parts,” she said. “Hoody, jeans and grubby trainers (running shoes). But while the older one spoke I zeroed down on his eyes – they were pitch black. No trace of white or pupil at all.”

“I made a silent gasp,” she said. “It was as if I was in terrible danger; that I had to get away. My heart rate went off.”

All she knew at that moment is that she had to get inside her apartment.

“Please miss,” the younger boy said from behind her. “My mother won’t be happy if she doesn’t know where we are.”

Something pulled at her mind, to let them in, to help them.

“I wanted to obey them at first considering that they were young,” she said. “But seeing their eyes took me away. I just had to get away from them both and I knew if I obeyed them I was going to seriously regret it.”

“I couldn’t get my words out,” she said. “My hands hit my keys and I swiftly opened my door and slid in. My heart was banging against my chest.”

What Are These Things?

There are some interesting theories on Black Eyed Kids. My own personal explanation for these creatures, and I so call them creatures as I do believe that is what they are, has been narrowed down to 2 logical (maybe not so logical but in my mind yes, logical) explanations.

To begin with the bulk of BEK encounters consist of youthful, usually dapper young men who employ hypnotic voices and mesmerizing black eyes to try to coerce their “victims” into doing their bidding. Secondly, these beings have displayed an evident inability to enter someone’s property without first being invited. It’s difficult to argue that these attributes aren't vampire-like (Mysterious Universe).

Why don't they just storm through the door like any other normal intruder? Surely such an menacing entity such as the BEKs would be capable of such an intrusion. It seems as though they need to be invited in. While it is certainly a big stretch (or is it?) to claim that these kids are blood sucking demons, we must remember that the idea of an evil presence needing some sort of invitation before entering a house (or even a human being) is a longstanding belief in many cultures. Blood letting aside, could BEKs possibly be another form of vampire? Could these BEKs be Vampires that live off fear rather than surviving on one’s life force or blood? There are certainly many types of vampires, why not one that can survive by living off a humans fear. Fear is one of many emotions and often times one of the most powerful.

Theory number two.....demons. The stuff of nightmares or just a really bad conjuring or devil worshipping gone wrong. Then again exorcisms seem to be on the rise so I'd be privy to putting my bets that BEKs might actually be a clan of devilish demons. Not impossible. If there is a heaven then there surely must be a hell right? Did Satan send his minions to earth in the form of Black Eyed Kids? And if so, why? We may never know. Just another thing to ponder in the endless list of paranormal oddities.

I agree, the web has accumulated tons of stories from people who have had experiences with BEK's. There is just something strange about these experiences that black contact lenses just can't explain. The mysterious Universe, it's a wonderful thing! I'll check that out, thanks again!

Great synopsis, I first had heard about BEK's on 4chan's x-file discussion boards and I'm surprised at how quickly BEK's have become a reported phenomena.

"eyes are the keys to the soul "

therefore black ,empty , and cold because they have none .

perhaps if they cross u r path ,like a black cat it would be bad luck to the point of death thinking they might want someones soul as if it was their mission in that they seem so purposeful and determineed in their actions . side note the asking permission thing is likely due to freewill.

if one says yes to sin (willful descision) , and does wrong (follows thru in willful action/s) the end result is sin becomings ones master

doing the devils will? or demons ? at which demonic wiles are manifested thru and into human experience.being in agrrement with them not God, or good morals ,ethics ... just say no!

They are ,like someone being addicted to drugs ,barely inseparable from the person that once was ...

each wrong (willful yes )dragging them down .

any demon haunting for exhas a right to be there and unless one exerts their right demons get away with fear and calamity, ghosts stay many due to wrongful deaths or clinging to this world familiar places,or loved ones , or can't find the light power is Jesus , every knee will bow...

hope that sheds some light . peace

Very cool subject! I find topics such as this to be both considered both true and false (like related to schrodinger's cat), because there are certain medical conditions that cause the eyes to become completely black, and then there's also proof that BEKs can be paranormal as well. In my opinion it's both real and mythical until someone proves otherwise.

But that's just me. I'm not really sure how to explain my theories though, either.

Thanks Jmartin! Glad you enjoyed. I am unaware of any kind of medical condition but Whowas (a fellow hubber :) ) has seemed to school me on this exact question! Here is what he says "Black pigmentation of the epithelium of the iris is rare but not unknown. It's a consequence of the overproduction of melanin. ". So there seems to be a genetic mutation that can cause completely black eyes including the irisis, although very rare. I might have to look into this and include it in my theories!

Your hubs are exactly what I need! I am a huge fan of Halloween and all I do is watch horror movies and read horror stories in October! I look forward to reading more of your "haunted" hubs... this one was great. Just out of curiosity (I am in no way trying to be a skeptic!), is there any kind of medical condition you know of that would cause someone to have black eyes? I doubt it but was just wondering.... that wouldn't explain the behavior anyway! ha

      Nice hub!

Very interesting, I never heard of BEK, only in movies. The scary part is using the innocent image of children and asking to be invited in. I don't doubt it is evil of the most devious kind at work. Notice if people watch ghost shows and they hear children laughing or see their presence, there is almost always an evil that follows. I believe dead children are in heaven not wondering the earth lost. I believe there are shape-shifter type demons who can take the form of anything to make you let your guard now, however if you have strong faith, The Lord will only allow so much. Thank you for such an interesting article :)

Very amusing, spooky hub. Really got me chuckling, thanks!

On the other hand, eye-color in humans (and other animals) is dictated by genetics and naturally occurs on a very broad scale ranging from very pale blue through to, yes, black. This is known as the 'Martin Scale' after the guy who put it together. Black pigmentation of the epithelium of the iris is rare but not unknown. It's a consequence of the overproduction of melanin. In other animals it is quite normal - most birds, for example and some small rodents, commonly have totally black eyes.

So if, in real life, you should meet a kid with black eyes, treat them kindly as they are probably suffering from a rare genetic condition and the last thing they need is to be considered as demonic.

There you go, there's a rational explanation for everyth.....arrggh! (gets attacked by vampire and slumps over keyboard...)

Charles Hilton, I agree with you. I do believe many of these BEK cases are fabricated. Although I ask a rather odd question when it comes to this explanation. Black contact lenses that cover the entire whites of the eye are usually very expensive and often times uncomfortable. A lot of these reported cases are of children between the ages of 7 and 17 with a median age being 15 or under. Not sure if these kids would have the means to purchase a set of black contacts??? Not Sure!

OldWitchCraft, very interesting. I would love to hear that story one day!

Interesting. I just heard of this phenomenon by name a couple of years ago. I've had a similar experience - but different. And the black eyes could not be mistaken for contacts because the blackness takes up the entire eye area. It's more like endless, black holes, too, not like seeing a normal flat black object. My experience was accompanied by telepathy, but in this case, I could hear her thoughts. She was about 12 and looked like a cute freckled kid. She was possessed by demonic entities, I think. She was possessed by a few more after she stole from me! And, there are more details to this story that are all weird, but that's how I got my things back.

Well that's some creepy stuff right there. If this isn't some kind of trick kids are pulling for kicks, obviously there can only be a supernatural explanation. Now that I'm aware I can be ready to give these black eyed kids another set of black eyes if they try to pull that nonsense on me!

I, too, was thinking the black eyes were simply contacts. But what you said about them not entering without being invited is very odd. It reminds me of the movie "Let Me In," although I can't recall if the little girl had black eyes or not. It was a good movie.. Thanks for posting, very interesting!

This is the first I've heard of this phenomenon, and it is rather unsettling, except for the probability that they are likely a subset of goth culture on steroids, so to speak, out to scare people for kicks. The black eyes could be a costume accessory.

The reason for the perceived hypnosis is from the fear and panic, which, in turn, is caused from the black eyes. And the kids behave strangely on-purpose for the desired affect on their victims.

There is nothing more terrifying to humans than what our eyes take in. In other words, what we see scares us more than anything we hear, smell, taste or touch---imagine looking out your bedroom window at night to see a face staring in, then think of something you could smell, taste, hear or touch that would frighten you nearly as much. You can't.

I'm not poo-pooing the other possibilities, I'm just withholding judgement in favor of rational explanations before going supernatural.

Regardless, this is an intriguing hub and I'll be alert for more information on this topic.

      Voted up.
