Welcome to Spirit's blog. The place where we find the beauty in the hidden, occult, mythologies of our world. Blessed be.

Hi all and welcome to Spirit's blog. Today as I was looking at my own transit chart I realized that I had not done a post about my favorite point on an astrology chart. So I am going to be writing about Lilith. We will dive into the myth from ancient texts, biblical references, and naturally astrological placements.

Sumerian mythology

Around 3000 BC, in roughly the Sumerian area, Lilith was considered to be part of a group of storm spirits called Lilitu. These spirits were believed to prey on women and children. They were associated with lions, storms, deserts and disease.

Mesopotamian myth

The next account of Lilith is in the Sumerian written Tablet XII of the Epic of Gilgamesh. This poem was written in the region known as Mesopotamia, circa 2100 BC. The story of Lilith is that the goddess Inanna (goddess of love, beauty, desire, justice) is caring for a Huluppu tree, a tree that connects heaven, earth and the underworld, often called the world tree. This particular tree was placed in the garden of the gods and Inanna planned to make a bed and a throne from the wood of this tree. One day she cannot approach the tree, it is inhabited by a snake in it's roots, Lilith (aka Lilitu, a female demon) in the trunk and an Anzu bird on it's limbs. An Anzu bird is a bird like monster who could spit fire and water. The great hero Gilgamesh kills the serpent with his sword, frightening both Lilith and the Anzu bird and making them flee.

Greek Myth

Lilith in Greek mythology was said to be Lamia, a Queen of Libya. Lamia had relations with the god Zeus, and Hera was enraged by this. She killed all of the children of Lamia except one. The grief Lamia felt transformed her into a monster, thus murdering all the children she could get her hands on. As of this transformation she is depicted as half woman, half serpent.

Greco-Roman Myth

In ancient Greco/Roman stories she is said to possibly have been the daughter of Hekate, the goddess of witchcraft and magic. It is said that Hekate would use the offspring of Lamia (Empusae, supernatural demons) to scare away travelers. The Empusae would either kill or scare to death anyone within their reach.

Jewish Folklore

In Jewish biblical texts, specifically the Book of Isaiah, she is said to be the first wife of Adam. After denying to bend to the will of Adam, Lilith is cast out of the Garden of Eden. Then she meets with the serpent, makes a deal and is never heard from again.

Lilith is Persephone myth

Another myth from the Greco/Roman era is that Lilith is Persephone. Persephone also known as Kore, was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Hades the god of the underworld falls in love with Persephone. He decides to abduct her, and take her to the underworld to rule as his queen. Demeter searches through the heavens and earth and finally finds Persephone. Hades does not let her go easily, he gives her pomegranate seeds to eat, as a trick. Then Persephone was cursed into spending a third of the year in the underworld and the other 2 thirds of the year with the gods. This tale was used to explain the seasons and why crops would not grow in the winter months.

Dead Sea Scrolls Tales

In the Dead Sea Scrolls Lilith is portrayed as a female desert dwelling demon. This demon is believed to steal the souls of men weak in their faith. This found in "The Song for a Sage" and "Songs to Disperse Demons", they were both used in an exorcism type of practice.

Lilith in Astrology

Lilith in astrology is generally referred to as Black Moon Lilith. Due to the fact that the moon has an elliptical orbit around the earth it has two mid points, the Earth and Black Moon Lilith. Therefore technically Lilith is a mathematical point.

Lilith in Taurus

Lilith in Taurus: The biggest fear with Lilith in this sign is a fear of poverty. It makes these natives deeply desire any material object they see. This is an attempt to fill an emotional void with things. This in turn makes people very lustful, always wanting more and more from their partner. As if relations will fill the void better than objects. To use Lilith in a more positive way and face your fear, just draw the line, enough is enough.

What about Me?

Now that we know the myth, the calculation of the point, and it's overall meaning in astrology, you may be asking "What about me?". Well here is Black Moon Lilith's interpretation in each sign.

Lilith characteristics in Astrology

Lilith stays roughly nine months in each of the zodiac signs. She is said to embody a person's primitive side, behavior in a beastly form. This point shows our repressed sexuality, biggest fear and the dark side of our personality. It also deals with creativity in it's purest forms.

Lilith in Aries

Lilith in Aries: This placement gives off a fear of being unworthy. It pushes action upon the native, even if it is unsolicited. Then you search those actions for worthiness. This naturally causes a lack in self-esteem, making you feel like you need to do more and more impulsive actions. This is the point where you believe that you do not deserve anything. Therefore when acceptance is found you throw yourself at it in an extremely passionate way. To begin to dissolve this fear, prove to yourself that you are in fact worthy.

Lilith in Gemini

Lilith in Gemini: Here the Black Moon Lilith has a deep fear of rejection. It makes us overly conscious of other's opinions. With this being an air sign they use words to pursue their "prey". They also may be known to push people away before they are rejected themselves. So they seduce others to improve pride, then push them away once they get too close. To face this fear you must increase your trust in others.

Lilith in Cancer

Lilith in Cancer: The deepest fear here is of abandonment. This placement makes a person needy. They create their idea of family and stick to it. Also this placement craves to be needed, so they are always willing to tuck a person under their wing and make them family. The theory behind this is not everyone can or will abandon them. Understanding is key to the undoing of this fear, stop needing others and start trusting in them.

Lilith in Leo

Lilith in Leo: This placement leads to the biggest fear being a fear of change. These natives will use that raw creativity to keep things stagnant. They would rather not grow or evolve, and will do everything in their power to fight it. This fear of change is directly linked to your ego and showy personality, if things change they will no longer be the center of attention. To counteract this fear it is recommended to start small, creating changes and seeing them through.

Lilith in Virgo

Lilith in Virgo: A fear of failure drives this placement. This leads to a self love, that makes the native more important than others. This placement makes them work harder, as a result of harder work they should get more recognition. In turn because you are all work, you expect the same from others. If you even perceive that another is not working as hard as you, then you criticize them harshly for it. To use the power of Lilith positively, take a look at your life and all that you have succeeded in.

Lilith in Libra

Lilith in Libra: Libra is a social sign, as an air sign, the biggest fear here is of loneliness. This causes a compromise in values, ethics or morals to keep others from leaving, making you lonely. Due to the nature of this sign they tend to value fairness and anything making it unfair will make a Libra miserable, but if there is a chance of being alone, they will cast that aside and deal with it. To counteract the placement of Lilith, take a look at the length of your meaningful relationships. These have stood the test of time, you will never be lonely.

Lilith in Scorpio

Lilith in Scorpio: Natives with Lilith here have an intense fear of loss. Scorpios being about mysteries in the first place, will take any unsolved mysteries as a loss. They treat people as one big mystery to be uncovered, with Lilith here you may find that there is almost an obsession with figuring people out. Therefore making the native, possessive of others. They are possessive over the mysteries they try to solve and if that is a person and they leave it is now a loss. In this sign to use Lilith wisely, realize that some things are better left alone. You do not need to know the mystery of everyone and everything.

Lilith in Capricorn

Lilith in Capricorn: Capricorns are known for having it all together, and being know-it-alls. Their fear is of neglect, whether it be self neglect or neglect of others. This ties into the responsibility of this sign, any slack in responsibility is a sign of neglect. To counteract this fear most natives want control over everything. If they are in control no person or thing will be neglected. To use these powers in a positive way, have faith in others and yourself.

Lilith in Sagittarius

Lilith in Sagittarius: The sore spot for these natives is the fear of being meaningless. These natives can spend an entire life looking for meaning and if anything happens that deviates them from their path of meaning, it is met with fear and anger. Lilith here can be used positively by looking at your life's journey, all that you have done and see the value in it.

Lilith in Aquarius

Lilith in Aquarius: Powerless is the fear of these natives. Those with Lilith here will demand ultimate freedom, so they are never reliant on others. Also it plays into the originality of this sign and makes sure it's natives "beat to their own drum". Therefore they drift away from others to not be dependent on them, making them appear helpless. Lilith here can be tamed by realizing everyone, even you need help sometimes.

Now that we have taken the time to explore how this pertains to us. It stands to show that Black Moon Lilith is a necessary point to analyze. Once fully acknowledged, only then can we begin to uncover our fears and begin to face them head on. No more tucking it away and forgetting about it, the only way to use the positives of Black Moon Lilith is to face her head on. Personally I never realized that my need for freedom was really because I was afraid to be dependent on others (Lilith is in Aquarius).

Lilith in Pisces

Lilith in Pisces: The biggest fear for these natives is vulnerability. Because this sign is known for it's kindness and happy temperament, they see vulnerability as a character flaw, not something everyone possesses. These natives tend to retreat into the mysticism that surrounds them to look for strength. They must always appear strong and emotionally resilient. Never shedding a tear over anything, that would make them weak. To tap into the creative side of Lilith, acknowledge that everyone has vulnerability and weakness somewhere. There is no way for us to become super heroes.
