Book Review of "Understanding The Purpose and Power of Prayer" by Dr. Myles Munroe

What is prayer? Why do people pray? Does prayer really work? What is the purpose of prayer?

These are very important questions any person who practices the universal art of prayer should ask himself and understand. I say this because from my own experience, I did not really understand the deeper meaning of prayer and the answers to these questions until later in life, even though I have religiously practiced prayer throughout my life. Sometimes, I ask ‘if God is sovereign and can do whatever He wishes, then why pray?’ ‘Why are my prayers not being answered?’.

My questions were answered and I learnt the principles and precepts established by the Creator Himself regarding the divine art of prayer when I read the book “Understanding The Purpose and Power of Prayer”.

"Understanding The Purpose and Power of Prayer, Earthly Licence for Heavenly Interference"

Dr Myles Munroe introduces the subject that “prayer could be designated as the first global product of religion”. Prayer is an ancient holy art, more universal and common ritual practiced and embraced by people of all religions – Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, pagans, heathens, mormons and people in every culture, civilization and era. This book about prayer takes us back to the genesis of prayer and explains God’s original intent and purpose of prayer. Understanding that has been the missing part in my prayer life.

The book has 238 pages and 12 chapters that comes under 4 parts.

Part I

The first part of the book introduces the foundation of prayer and explores our Creator’s original intent and purpose at creation because prayer was born out of God’s arrangements for man’s assignment on earth [Genesis 1:26]. God has given man the dominion mandate and the earth is man’s domain to rule. Because God is holy and faithful and will not break His own word, He will not interfere in man’s realm unless man gives God the permission to do so through prayer.

Part II

The second part of the book present’s God’s principles on how to enter God’s presence with the right spirit, approach and preparation to offer effective prayers as God’s priests and explains the importance of praying with faith.

Part III

The third part of the book introduces the Principles of Prayer derived from Jesus’ model prayer and the prayer practices and rituals of the Old Testament priests. It also has 12 action steps to prayer and you can learn about the hurdles and hindrances to answered prayer.

Part IV

The fourth part is about the power of prayer. You learn about the power of the Word of God, the power of Jesus’ Name and fasting. Importantly, you’ll learn how to become a person of prayer, activating the most awesome power to influence earth from heaven through prayer.
