Book Summary: The Seat of the Soul, by Gary Zukav 1990
Telepathy shows a connection between people.
The theory proposed in this book is summarized in chapter V, Intuition.
The five-sensory (materialistic) point of view is: there is no other place from which insights and hunches (guidance) can come. The multi-sensory view (spiritual) is: insights, inspiration (guidance) are messages from the soul, or from advanced intelligence that assist the soul on its evolutionary journey. p.80 See Q. 1.
To the multi-sensory (spiritual) personality, intuitive insights are registrations within its consciousness of a loving guidance that is continually assisting and supporting its growth. p.81
In a world of five-sensory (materialistic) humans that understand power as external, intuitive knowledge is not regarded as knowledge, and therefore, it is not processed. p.84
The higher self is the connecting link when the soul speaks to its personality. It is the dialogue between the personality and its immortal self. p.86 So powerful is the energy of the soul that it could not advance into a physical form without exploding that form. In the creation of a personality, the soul, the soul calibrates parts of itself, reduces parts of itself, to take on the human experience. Your higher self is that aspect of your soul that is in you, but it is not the fullness of your soul. p. 87
The personality is never separate from its soul, and the soul and its personalities are continually assisted and guided. p. 89
Chapter I, Evolution
The evolution that we learned in school is the evolution of the physical form. Single celled creatures are predecessors of all more complex forms of life. A fish is more complex and therefore more evolved than a sponge, etc. p. 19
Our current understanding of evolution results from exploring physical reality with our five senses. We have been, until now, five-sensory human beings (materialistic). We see the results of our intentions. We see rage kills and that kindness nurtures. We see and feel the effects of a snarl and a smile. p. 21.
The decisions you make and the actions you take are the means by which you evolve. At each moment you choose the intentions that will shape your experiences and those things upon which you will focus your attention. These choices affect our evolutionary process. If you choose unconsciously, you evolve unconsciously. If you choose consciously, you evolve consciously. p. 29.
Your soul is that part of you which is immortal. Every person has a soul, but a personality that is limited to the five senses (materialistic) is not aware of its soul, and therefore cannot recognize the influences of its soul. As a personality becomes multi-sensory (spiritual), its intuition (hunches and subtle feelings) become important to it. It comes to recognize intentions and to respond to them rather than to the actions and words it encounters. p.30
Your soul loves without restriction and accepts without judgment. p.31
Fear or Love
Chapter II, Karma
From the point of view of the soul, all of its incarnations are simultaneous. All of its personalities exist at once. Therefore, the release of negativity that occurs in one of the soul's incarnations benefits not only itself, but all of its soul's other other incarnations also. Because the soul, itself, is not confined to time, the past of a personality, as well as its future, is enhanced when a personality releases currents of fear and doubt. p.35
The personality sometimes appears as a force running rampant in the world. This can be the origin of what we call an evil human being, and it can be the origin of a schizophrenic human being. It is the result of the personality being unable to find its reference point or connection to its soul. The conflicts of a human's life are directly proportional to the distance at which an energy of personality exists separately from the soul. p.37 See Q. 2.
Every action, thought, and feeling is motivated by an intention, and that intention is a cause that exists as one with an effect. If we participate in the cause, we participate in the effect. We are held responsible for our every action, thought and feeling our every intention. p. 38-39
The Golden Rule is a behavioral guide based on karma. p. 40
When we judge, we create negative karma. Judgment is a function of the personality. This does not mean we should not act appropriately to the circumstances in which we find ourselves. p.43
If we do not judge, how can there be justice? Christ and Gandhi knew non-judgmental justice. Non-judgmental justice is a perception that allows you to see everything in life, but does Not engage your Negative Emotions. p.45
Chapter III, Reverence
A person who is angry, and yet reveres Life will respond very differently to the difficulties of his or her life than a person who is angry and has no reverence for Life. The person without reverence will strike out against Life. The violence released in killing is much greater than the violence in speaking angry words. A person who is reverent will be spared the severe karmic consequences of one who is not. p. 48
Reverence is engaging in a form and depth of contact with Life that is well beyond the shell of form and into essence. It is contact with the interior of its beingness. p.50 It is an attitude of honoring Life. p.51
Reverence is a perception. Only when we see through eyes that lack reverence does the feeding of one animal upon another appear to be a cruel system instead of one where species learn to give to each other, where there is a natural give and take and sharing of the energies between kingdoms p.52
The destruction of human Life, plant Life, animal Life, and the planet would be considerably diminished, or would cease, if there were an active principle of reverence within our species. Although we are engaged in evolutionary processes that require personal learning, that does not authorize us to destroy Life while we are learning. p.54 See Q. 3.
Examine your feelings and move toward the Light.
Chapter IV, Heart
The higher order of logic and understanding (over materialism) comes from the heart. It requires close attention to feelings. The central position of the heart in the multi-sensory human and sensitivity to emotion, appear extraneous to the five-sensory personality because they do not serve the accumulation of external power. We reward the military officer who sends himself or others to pain and death for the sake of external power. p.60
Without an awareness of our emotions, we cannot associate the effects of anger, sadness, grief, and joy - within ourselves or others - with their causes. Emotions reflect intentions. Without an awareness of your emotions you are not able to experience reverence. Reverence is not an emotion. It is a way of being. The path to reverence is through your heart, your feelings. p. 61
Feelings and intentions appear to be unrelated to the world of matter (materialism). [An example was given of an infantry officer who had not examined his feelings and eventually committed suicide.] p. 63-64
[Another example was given of a man who had an emotionally difficult childhood and grew up angry. He recognized his long-standing pattern of behavior and he was determined to confront both his pain and his pattern. After searching in solitude he emerged with changed values. He began to soften, became more sensitive and cynicism gave way to an emerging joy. Other people became central to his life.] p. 65-66
Examine the choices that you make each moment in terms of whether they move you toward Light (the Divine) or away from it. p. 72
Chapter V, Intuition
Chapter V, Intuition is the central theory of this book and was treated in the Overview. Intuition contains messages from the soul.
