Can We Talk to the Dead? Can the Dead Talk to Us?
To Cross the Great Divide - Communicating with the Dead
Death. It is something that is inevitable for all of us, whether we think about it or not. Death is also something that many of us experience on a very real level, specifically when we lose a loved one or someone that is in general very close to our hearts...be it friend or family member. For immensely tragic losses, some of us may be left wondering - can we communicate with the dead? In fact, this question has been floating around the human hearts and minds since humans had a rational thought in their heads. As soon as the first person passed and left their family or friends here in the mundane world, we have wondered whether or not we could contact our dead loved ones.
So can we cross the great divide that is death and reach directly into the spiritual realm to communicate with the dead? If we can't talk to the dead, can the dead communicate with the living in some way? We'll explore the world of mediums, divination, and seances in this article and try our darndest to answer the question that has plagued the curious human mind for centuries - can we communicate with the dead...and if so, how?
Mediums - Facilitating Communication Between the Dead & Living
One way that it is believed that the dead can communicate with the living is through a medium (a person who plays the middle-man for communication between the dead and the living). What a medium does is listens, sees, or senses messages from the dead and then communicates those messages to the living.
There are modern-day mediums that have even been given their own television shows or have starred on television shows, examples being John Edward and Sylvia Browne. The question is, do we believe these mediums are really aiding in communication between the living and dead or are they simply faking it? Sylvia Browne seems quite far-fetched in many of the books that she writes (this is strictly my opinion here); however, when I've seen her do readings on TV and read about her readings, many many people claim that she is dead-on (no pun intended) with her readings. Does she in fact acquire her information on pure strangers from the dead loved ones of those strangers or possibly a higher power?
John Edward is a little less believable, in my opinion. While many people love his television show, I have always found it to be a little off. John Edward has been a proclaimed medium for years, and has performed thousands of readings...and usually the readings on TV consist of John calling out a name or "initial" or disease of some sort to the audience, then someone stands up or volunteers, confirming that someone they loved that passed indeed had the name of "bob" or the like. Is this to say that he doesn't communicate with the dead? I couldn't tell you for sure...you'd have to draw your own conclusion on that.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of psychics and mediums running businesses in the United States today. They are indeed in the business of what they call "communicating with the dead", but do we trust all of them to tell us what our dead granny might be trying to communicate or do we try to communicate with the dead in our own way? Or do we wait until the dead try to communicate with us? There are so many ways and trains of thought on this topic..,.

When the Dead Communicate with the Living
There are sometimes when the dead try to communicate with the living in their own spiritual, special way...but the problem is that most of the time we aren't listening or don't believe that it is possible. Or both. What about ghosts? Do they have a message to bring the living or are they simply unintelligent beings roaming around on our plane waiting to find the light?
Some might say that ghosts indeed are intelligent and can convey messages to the living in different ways. Take for instance the ouija board and automatic writing. These are two types of divinatory techniques that are said to aid in communication between the dead and the living. Are ghosts able to communicate with us through a ouija board or automatic writing? Many psychics and spiritualists believe so; however, one has to be extremely careful in which ghosts or spirits are pulled into that level of communication. Ouija boards and spirit writing are said to open a door to any and all spirits...making the door hard to shut if the wrong one comes through. If you intend on trying to use the ouija board or spirit writing, I HIGHLY suggest doing your research before trying either out. In my personal opinion, the ouija board is dangerous and I will never use it again...but some experienced psychics have luck on it and are able to protect themselves from negative spirits.
As for spirit writing (automatic writing), I think it's a little less dangerous, but again that's purely my own opinion as some believe that automatic writing opens the pathway for one to be possessed by a spirit of the dead. Whether these possessions are by the dead or some spirit that is different altogether, we may disagree. The point here is, if you're attempting to let the dead communicate with you, be careful by which means you choose and be ready to protect yourself against negativity. Just remember, just as there are negative and cruel people in the world, there are negative and cruel people on the other side too. You don't go inviting everyone you see on the streets into yourself, now do you?
Usually when using a ouija board or automatic writing, these techniques can be wrapped into what we call a "séance". A séance is a session in summoning communication with the dead. Despite how it is portrayed on television and in the movies, seances don't have to all be evil and purported on bringing evil creatures to life...seances can also be used to contact whatever energy might be haunting your home or environment. Again, no matter what form of communication you use during a séance, please have someone present that is experienced with the spiritual realm and knows how to protect the circle before attempting to contact the other side. Don't be stupid...talking to the dead or spirits is not a board game, friend.
Other than the traditional means of divining and talking to the dead, what are other ways that the dead may communicate with the living?
Through dreams. Dreams are a big portal of communication between the living and the dead. Have you ever had a loved one pass and seen them that very night or the next night in your dreams? Is it possible that they were trying to say goodbye to you by coming into your dreams that night? I believe so.
Other means of communication between the dead and the living could include simple noises and movements that ghosts or spirits may make to grab your attention. Maybe your grandmother's favorite rocking chair begins to rock without anyone in it...maybe that's a sign and her communication to you that she'll always be around. We can't ignore these signs that our passed loved ones are trying to communicate with us...but we also can't thrive or hang on threads waiting for them.
However communication is attempted between the living and the dead, one thing is for sure...they are out there, whether you believe or not. And if you lend an ear to a spirit that is trying to communicate, or even your senses, you might just hear a message that the other side has been trying to give to you for a long time. Intepret the message quickly, don't dwell on it too long...and always filter out the fluff. What do I mean by this? You'll know when you get a message.
