Careful study of the Bible leads to one conclusion: Atheism

Updated on February 28, 2012
Going Up?
Going Up?

Its hard to consider an atheist mentally lazy as they are constantly challenging and thinking for themselves as opposed to the faithful who have given up rational thought and turn their minds over to others to do their thinking for them.

Non-belief of many comes from the opposite of what you are saying about reading the bible. A careful reading of the bible and comparing it to other non-biased sources of information and common sense actually creates many atheist.

Any child from around six on knows that the stories told in Sunday school can't possibly be true. That's why religious adults spend so much time an energy trying to indoctrinate them and take away their natural curiosity of the world and supplanting it with bibilical "answers".

Late in life many leave the church because of its subpar morals. While society has moved beyond concepts of an eye for an eye, slavery, sending she-bears from the dessert to attack kids for mocking bald men, religious people still hide their bigotry, hypocrisy and hate behind ancient texts cobbled together from previous religions.

Its time to move on beyond spending one's life so concerned about death and work on living in the now and making the world better rather then depending on a predetermined path from a magical father figure in sky.

      Still think Noah is real?

If the entire human race were repopulated from a single family in the Middle-East in 2350 B.C., then we would expect the highest levels of genetic diversity to be in the Middle East. Populations who moved to Africa, Europe, Australia, etc would carry only a subset of that genetic diversity with them. In reality, the highest levels of human genetic diversity occur in Africa. For example, the Khosian (in South Africa) have some of the most diverse genetics. If the Bible predicted Noah’s Ark landing on Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, genetic diversity would at least align with the Biblical story. Unsurprisingly, humans appear to have arisen in the same location as our closest genetic relatives – chimpanzees and gorillas. (See National Geographic’s Genographic Project, which uses genetics to trace the migration paths of humans over the past 200,000 years.)

You have to understand that every cultural group forms its own rituals and stories. These stories and rituals reinforce the group. No one truly believes the stories, they are simply a shared experience that makes the individual feel safer in their group.

Now when a child is young the presents under the Christmas tree are explained by saying that a fat elf from the North Pole brings them. This saves the parents from having to negociate with the child for gifts and keeps them in line. SANTA IS WATCHING YOU.

By the age the kid can use Google Maps he understands that this was all a little white lie but can see the wisdom of going along with the ruse as long as possible. But we don't try to continue the white lie when the kid is a teenager.

In the ancient days if you saw a magic show you might bow down and start worshiping the magician as a god. Now when we go to a magic show we delight in the trick but the first thing we think is "HOW DID HE DO THAT?" Because we know there is a logical explanation.

With religion the desire to want to believe in all of the wonderful afterlife fantasies is so strong that we surround ourselves with a group that tries to reinforce the belief via repetition and we filter out all other knowledge like fact and common sense. In reality everyone is constantly struggling with the doubt because our rational brains refuse to give in to wishful thinking. Its basically self-brain washing.

Yes, we are just here. Our ego tries to tell us that there is some greater purpose for existence. When times are bad we reassure ourselves that our suffering is for the greater good and we'll get our reward later. Its a coping mechanism. Once you realize this you can move on and try to make life better here in reality. Your purpose is to make living better for your fellow man because you will also benefit.

There is beauty in natural science. The beauty is in the amazingly complex world we live in. Not in some kind of paint by numbers clockwork god design.

Telephone is still not scientific. Nor is an unreferenced quote. I'm sorry, but I chose to believe that the Bible, in its entirety, is true. Life has proven God to me, not that He ever needed to prove Himself to someone as small as me.

I am curious- do you believe in a higher power at all? Can you see beauty beyond natural science in nature? Do you believe in A god, or that we are just here, with no explanation, and for no purpose?

Stories written down by man from stories told by spoken word for hundreds of years to explain the "unexplainable". Edited and adapted over the years. Transcribed by monks who edited, made typos. Whole gospels tossed out in the major editing by the Romans. Etc. Basically a game of "telephone" played over hundreds of years.

      Back to Noah:

"The Bible goes into quite a bit of detail about ancestral lineages, and how old people were when they gave birth to the subsequent generation. This allows us to calculate backwards and figure out when the global flood supposedly happened. According to the Bible, the date of the global flood ends up being around 2350 BC. This date is simply not realistic. Ancient civilizations go back earlier than that. Egypt, for example, has a series of dynasties leading back to 3000 BC."

And that is rock solid, scientific PROOF saying that there was no chance at all that there was a miracle, an act of God (as our insurance companies call it)? I have yet to meet a scientist who can absolutely prove the Bible to be false. I do know some who struggle with the idea that there could be a God, or that some of the accounts in the Bible actually happened, but they have all agreed that while they can't prove that it is all true, they also can not prove it all to be false. If one part of it is false, it all must be. If one part of it is true, then so is the rest. The struggle is learning to accept it for what it is: the inspired Word of God, written by man through the Holy Spirit.

Here are some of the facts which render the flood story impossible:

1.due to factors such as the speed of the water current, no trees could have survived the flood. yet, individual trees have been found that are 6,000 and even 10,000 years old, and a tree colony exists today which dates back over 80,000 years. noahs ark was 4000 years ago.

      2. genetic variation can be measured in species thereby shedding light on their history. cheetahs, for example have so little variation that they are all essentially inbred. scientists estimate that the cheetah population dwindled to possibly as few as 500 approx. 10,000 years ago. almost all other living species show differentiation at such a higher level that their lineage can be traced to dates far earlier. humans through DNA can be traced to common parentage over 100,000 years ago. it is completely scientifically implausible that all living things achieved their measured levels of genetic differentiation from just TWO mates, a mere 4000 years ago.

      3. neglecting the impossibility of fitting the millions of species on a single boat that could never have floated nor been designed nor built with available technology, engineering and tools, by a few men , in that short time.......

there was no time to collect the species. noah and family would have had to collect over 300,000 beetles. yup, just beetles. and they collected them from all over the world. and what about the 1,000,000 species of insects? again, from all over the world. sound likely?

      4. many species can only survive in their climate. polar bears would not have survived the trip. neither would many species from warmer climates. not only did they make it to the ark, but noah must have had some wonderful refrigeration and heating set-up aboard the mighty ship.

5.was the water freshwater or saltwater?

if fresh, no saltwater fish would have survived to exist today. if saltwater, no freshwater fish today.

6.how did animals that cant fly or swim get from mt. ararat in asia to australia? there are many species which exist only there.

7.light doesnt penetrate the ocean more than about 500 ft. if the earth were submerged under 29,000 ft. in order to cover mt. everest, no marine plant life would have survived.

I can't call something a liar when they don't exist. Man wrote the bible and all of its silly notions of how the world began. Men later proved that things like the great flood never could happen.

Noah - there is not enough water on the earth to flood it.

To say that the stories we learned in Sunday School are wrong is to call God a liar. If God is a liar, then nothing in the Bible can be true. The choice is to believe it all, or denounce it all. And while you can't prove that any of the stories in the Bible happened, I challenge you to prove that even one of them didn't happen. I'm interested to read what you come up with. (Really, I am. I am absolutely interested in the thoughts of anyone who feels this way!)
