Casting Spells that Work: Creating Channels

Sage has been a Witch for 25 years. As a teacher and writer, she enjoys writing informative articles to teach others the Craft of the Wise.

Learning Witchcraft

There’s more to casting spells that work than just following a script. In fictional Witchcraft, the Witch mutters a rhyme or points a wand, and poof! The very thing they desire materializes, either right away or in a short amount of time. This has given people the mistaken idea that Witchcraft is the easy road to getting what you want without having to make any effort other than following the spell’s instructions. They come to it with the idea that all you have to do is learn a few techniques and, poof, those things you want most – money, love, popularity, etc. – will begin streaming into their lives.

Other people think that if chanting and candlelight does not bring what you want without work, that it means Witchcraft doesn’t actually work at all.

In my opinion, both groups of people are wrong. I’m a firm believer that the Craft works, but it’s not instant gratification that comes without effort. When you perform a magical working or cast a spell, you have to provide it with a channel.

What Is a Channel?

Part of the fundamental idea behind casting a spell is that it’s a process of raising energy and directing that energy toward your goal. This energy mingles with the object of your desire and gives it a push in your direction. This is what sets the process in motion.

Think of energy like electricity. Electricity doesn’t just float around in the air-- it travels along conduits. It runs along wires. When lightening comes down in a bolt it seeks to take the shortest distance—it seeks out something conductive, like a tree, down which it can travel. Like water flowing down the mountain, energy seeks and takes the path of least resistance.

In magic, the path your energy takes is sometimes referred to as a channel. It’s like creating a conduit for that energy that you raised and directed.

I'm not a big fan of the Frosts' ideas about Wicca (neither their books nor their school), but they do have some brilliant insights when it comes to magic and spell casting.

Casting Spells and Providing Channels

The most effective spells that work will have a channel for that energy to travel. Let’s consider how channels work in two different scenarios. Imagine two different people cast spells for money.

Hilda casts her spell and provides herself with several channels. She applies for a promotion at work, and she works her butt off to be a stellar employee and get notice. She writes people who’ve owed her money from the past and asks them to pay her back, in whole or part, if they are able. She puts some garage sale items she found up for sale on EBay. Hilda is creating a very strong conduits for her energy to take, so that the energy will remain strong and focused.

Herbie, on the other hand, doesn’t bother with a channel. He casts his spell, then just goes on with life as usual. No one owes him money. He’s just getting by at work, he’s not applying for better jobs or for a second job. He’s not even applying for loans. In what way does Herbie expect this money he wanted to come to him? Did he think a package was going to fall out of the sky into his lap? Even if his spell was performed perfectly, that energy he sent out has no channel—it’s simply going to weaken and eventually disperse.

Some Possible Channels for Magic Spells

Spell Purpose
Possible Channels
Money Spells
Apply for promotions/new jobs; apply for loans/grants; start a new home business; put items up for sale
Love Spells
Join an online dating website; begin getting out more to places you enjoy, looking good and ready to flirt; ask friends to set you up on blind dates; hit a single’s cruise
Health Spells
Go to a doctor for treatment; follow your treatment plan; take CARE of yourself; start paying attention to your diet & exercise needs; seek out and use alternative healers in conjunction with conventional medicine
Protection Spells
Don’t speed on the highway; get an alarm installed; lock your doors; follow safety regulations and recommendations for whatever you’re doing; take self-defense

How To Sense Energy

Learning Witchcraft

Just following along with instructions to cast a spell is not enough; that's just dabbling, and your . results will always be hit or miss.

Truly learning The Craft starts with the mental preparation.

Ineffective Channels for Magic

When casting spells, some channels are better than others. And some definitely suck. Primarily these are channels in which there will be competing energies.

Using money spells as an example again, an ineffective channel would be buying lottery tickets. High competition for the prize is what makes it ineffective. Lots of people are aiming their energy at the same thing. Even people who are not casting spells are still, unwittingly, sending energy toward the big winnings just by their own excitement force of will. When energy from different directions is tugging on one object, they negate each other.

Casting spells on other people without their consent and cooperation makes for poor channels as well. Everyone has a will of his own. Even if they don’t focus and direct energy through spells, there is a certain amount of energy transference that comes and goes through their own thoughts and emotions. When you cast spells on someone who is not in compliance, whatever channels you set up can be easily blocked, deflected, disrupted, distorted, etc. simply by it competing with the energy generated by their own will and feelings.

This is why it’s always better to cast spells on yourself rather than on unsuspecting other people. For example, cast a spell on yourself for excellent performance on your job so you impress your boss, rather than on your boss to force an artificially formed opinion on you. Likewise, it’s better to cast a spell on yourself to draw compatible lovers into your life, rather than to cast a spell on a person to create artificially formed feelings for you.

Always choose a channel that is the most direct to your goal—the one that gives the greatest odds.

Why even Bother?

Some people will say, “If you have to work for something, why even bother casting a spell?” Well, it’s true—it’s not like you need Witchcraft to accomplish things in life. But the way I see it, any little boost that will help me toward my goals, give me an edge, is something of which I’m going to take full advantage.

After all, that's what Witchcraft is about-- it's about helping you attain your needs and desires; helping you fulfill your goals. It's not about the special effects in big Hollywood productions, or living out fantasies; it's about transforming your life in reality.

Spells that work incorporate both the mundane and the magical—covering all your bases.

The video reminded me of something I've long observed: If you hold your hands more or less as he is holding his and rotate your fingertips at a distance of a half-inch or less, you will feel an electric charge build up. Sometimes, in the right light, you can even see it as a faint bluish haze.

Hi blueheron, yes it's true. Some people can see it-- it works best in dim light (candlelight, or a nightlight, but not directly in front of you) and holding up the hands in front of a light, blank background (like a white wall). It's pretty amazing stuff. Thanks for commenting.

I doubt if I could see it now. My eyesight isn't what it used to be. But there is nothing mystical about it--not like seeing auras or anything. The little blue electrical haze is really there.

We'd all like to be Samantha on Bewitched...haha! Twitch our nose and poof...there it is. Great hub explaining the principles of magic. People use the energy of their thoughts all the time and don't even realize it. They would be shocked if you told them that they were casting a spell to a degree!

I have done a few spells to manifest jobs, a home etc. It is so exciting to learn that utilizing energy flow to manifest really works. I also feel that being as specific as possible is important since it hones the energy in the actual direction to go. Very good description of a channel as well.

Oh, I know I wish I could twitch my nose or mutter some rhyme and get the dishes done but sadly it just doesn't work that way. A lot of people unwittingly send out energy, especially when highly charged with emotions. The only real difference is the Witch learns to harness it and use it deliberately and with more control. Thank you catgypsy for stopping by.

Hi Lily Luna; I agree, being absolutely specific is important. I sometimes see people on message forums or in chat rooms asking about 'wish spells' and I see them on silly websites that claim to have 'real working spells'. But it seems futile to cast a spell for a wish when you can focus the energy so much better by actually focusing on your need. Thanks for stopping by, i appreciate the comment.

So many of the things people wish for might not be right for them. People may want lots of money for a variety of often good reasons. But life doesn't give them money; instead it gives them dignity and competency--a far better gift. While I would like to be able to cast a spell to get my car running right, the life force makes a different demand of me: I have to learn how to fix the car. I would like to be able to cast a spell to give my children everything, effortlessly. The life force demands that I cook and clean and do laundry and drive them all over the place--and give the gift of active love and active kindness. If you could have everything you wanted effortlessly, you would wind up a big zero--and the pople you wanted to provide for would experience your love for them as a bit empty, because it would be a little unclear whether you would ever have willingly sacrificed a moment of your own comfort for them.

Use your powers to get the good stuff--dignity and competency, and the abilty and strength to manifest love and kindness in active and practical ways.

Thanks so much for your comments Blueheron, it's true. Life would not be better if things came without effort, we would never grow, we would have no challenges, we would not know the sweet satisfaction of success. I'm more of a practical Witch, I prefer to use magic to help me find the strength, guidance, inspiration, energy, etc. to go after my goals. I don't expect it to do it for me, and I believe it's far more effective used as a sort of 'power boost' than as instant gratification. Your insights are much appreciated.

I think my actual point was pretty much the same as the one your were making in your hub--that the energies you create with a spell must necessarily be manifested in action, since that's what you are trying to do, right? That is, to make energies manifest. Witchcraft could be one of many ways of doing this. We visualize many of the things we want by talking about them, seeking advice, and studying up on them. You could see a spell as a strong affirmation about what you are seeking--a commitment, which is always the first step.

I have to say 2 things:

      1. Magic is magic just because it doesn't need things to work for it. So, when you say to apply for jobs to get money, this is not magic, this is mundane thing and you don't need magic, you just need work. Can't you find money in the park? Can't a relative give you money just like magic? This is real magic, not working hard in mundane world.

      2. What about people who did them both, as you suggest? I worked on channels a lot and still my spells did not work. Actually after many years as a so called witch, none of my spells worked and I did a lot on all life leves. Why? well, maybe magic doesn't exist.

Thanks for your comment George, sorry for the late supply. I disagree with number 1; I very much see magic as part of nature, which means it doesn't poof things into existence. I see the things poofing into existence fantasy magic, not real magic. Can the goal of your spell come from an unexpected source? Sure... but I like to improve my odds.

As for your second point, I can't tell you what went wrong as I wasn't there. I do have a couple of articles about mistakes that people make in Witchcraft all the time. But if it's not your thing, if you think it doesn't exist, that's fine, too. We all have different experiences and see the world differently. Much luck to you.

I have a question. with creating channels in the money example, if i apply for jobs and sell things I'm obviously going to make more money than i am right now. would magic increase/improve the results I would get originally? like if I asked someone to pay me back, with magic would they act faster than without magic? I would just like a little bit more explanation about the results of magic vs without magic. I'm young and new to witchcraft but am very interested in the topic.
