The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The church, just one block away from the Santa Fe Plaza, was built between 1869 and 1886 on ground where churches have stood since 1626.

The cathedral makes for an interesting stop, not only for Catholics, but for anyone who appreciates religion, architecture, sculpture, or history.

The Site of Three Churches

The first church built in the location of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi was destroyed in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Another church was then built in its place called La Parroquia. The Saint Francis Cathedral later replaced La Parroquia, but kept its adobe north chapel in place. Built in the French Romanesque style, its stained glass windows were imported from France.

The Cathedral Today

Statues and monuments stand throughout the grounds of the cathedral. The fourteen Stations of the Cross, with their corresponding sculptures, are located in a prayer garden. A gift shop is just inside the front doors of the cathedral. The bronze front doors of the church are decorated with panels, each showing an event in the history of the church.

Services are held regularly at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and visitors are welcome.
