Being a Church Member does not Equate to being a Disciple of Christ

Updated on August 26, 2017

PlanksandNails' gol is to be a catalyst in encouraging the followers of Christ to pursue Biblical truth for themselves.

There are many who want, or desire to become a follower of Christ reconciling with God and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead them to truth. Unfortunately, many have a false ideology that if they become a church member, it equates to becoming a disciple of Christ.

The man-driven church system cannot create disciples of Christ period, but instead they create ‘Christians’ who conform to the worldly hierarchical religious structures of the world becoming slaves to the ‘good works’ of self-righteousness. Christendom is built on the foundation of man’s good works that organize people into groups and categories called denominations, charities, seminaries, universities, books, DVD’s, music, TV shows, magazines, etc. Just like the world, they promote their special celebrities through marketing and advertising tactics.

And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR FROM ME; IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. ’You leave the commandment of God and hold to THE TRADITION OF MEN.” – Mark 7:6-8

False Conversions

The tragedy of many in the moment they decide to live for Christ is that they are swept into the traditions of man, making the Gospel of no effect. The zeal of the Christian witness compels those who desire to follow Christ to fall for the trappings of organized religion and are told they must conform to a denominational template and become a cookie-cutter saint that somehow equates to being a disciple of Christ. Unfortunately, many have been hoodwinked into accepting a false gospel that converts them into an indoctrinated minion instead of being obedient to the way of Christ.

The culture of the counterfeit church system is identified by what they feed their members with. The masses are spoon fed their brand of indoctrination that teaches them to promote the brand name of their church and their Pastor instead of pointing to Christ. They will tell you that participating in their brand of religion, filling the pews and putting money in their offering plates equates to having a relationship with God. Many fail to realize that modern day Christianity is an idolatrous religion run by men who are consumed with mammon. They are antichrists who give lip service to Christ, but replace him with themselves instead.

For MANY WILL COME IN MY NAME, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. – Matthew 24:5

Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now MANY ANTICHRISTS have come. – 1 John 2:18

The clever deception of Satan has been to use men to usurp the role of Christ as the head. The salaried religious celebrities parade upon their stages and draw attention to themselves and their brand of doctrine.

Who is Lord?

You will always find the one-man-show on the common church website who is the predominantly displayed in the photo section. These special men are the ones in control who demand loyalty without question. Any scrutiny would be deemed as ‘hostility’ and being ‘divisive.’

You can always tell who runs the religious man-made because the pew-warmers will say, ‘This is Pastor Tim’s Church.’ Of course, it is his church. Everyone who walks through their doors will gather around the elevated podium to see their esteemed hireling each week. Pastor Tim has positioned himself to be the self-appointed one in all the affairs of the church. Any criticism is responded with, ‘Do not touch God's anointed,’ or ‘Obey your leaders and submit to them.’

The picture should be becoming clearer that those within the counterfeit church system are not equally brethren in Christ, but rather mindless religious slaves who bow down to their dictator and conform to his agenda.

No matter how many try to defend the man-driven church system, it will always fail on their demand for hierarchy. They fail to understand that their behaviours cannot be reconciled with the example of Christ and the apostles. All cults, sects and church organizations are set up on a hierarchical framework where there always someone who is appointed to prominence over the people. These elevated men believe that they are called to be like Moses as the mediator between them and God.

The fact is that any man who presumes to take upon himself a role that God has not given him is in direct disobedience towards Him. Yahweh gave unique authority to Moses as leader over Israel at that time in the Old Testament, but Christ clearly gave instructions to his disciples not to be lords over their brothers and sisters in the New Testament.

And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. BUT IT SHALL NOT BE SO AMONG YOU. But WHOEVER WOULD BE GREAT AMONG YOU MUST BE YOUR SERVANT, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:42-45

The ekklesia that Christ is building has no room for a personality who wants to be the center of attention. It is amazing how so many are duped into believing that this pattern is acceptable today.

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under COMPULSION, but willingly, as God would have you; not for SHAMEFUL GAIN, but eagerly; not DOMINEERING over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the CHIEF SHEPHERD appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. – 1 Peter 5:1:4

If you walk into any church building, you will find all of these upper-cased words in the above verses in action taking place. All you have to do is ask, ‘Who is in charge here?’ They will say, ‘Pastor Tim.’ You see, Pastor Tim is the ‘Chief Shepherd’ who wears his esteemed crown of glory that the people have given him.

Unfortunately, many still refuse to believe that what is called 'church' is a counterfeit repackaged version of the ekklesia that Christ is building.

All Christians will say they believe the God's word to be infallible, but in action they are too obsessed with their own traditions to want truth. Everything is wrapped up in glossy religious activities to promote their own self-righteousness. They advertise their church as the road to salvation, but fail to understand that they deny Christ they claim to follow in their vain traditions.

Thus MAKING VOID THE WORD OF GOD by your TRADITION that you have handed down. And many such things you do.” – Mark 7:13

The Christian in Action

The counterfeit church today is a double-minded world of confusion having become indistinguishable from the ways of the world. If you walk into any Christian bookstore, you will find it filled with mystical, ecumenical, eastern philosophical, universal, contemplative and meditative practices promote idolatry that God deems as an abomination.

The church system is run by religious men who have yoked themselves with the traditions and practices that are syncretistic will all other world religions. Christianity has become polarized religion in synthesis with the ecumenical antichrist worldly agenda.

Christianity does not really refer to God’s word for their world view, but instead follow the opinions and doctrines of hirelings who parade themselves upon their stages. The people have rejected Christ for the latest celebrity minister who likes to draw attention and allegiance to himself.

The sad fact is, many do not desire to study Scripture for themselves, nor do they allow the Holy Spirit to guide them to the truth. When you have someone other than Christ leading, you will never see the light. The harsh reality is that the church system attempts to unite heaven and earth with their own appointed mediators instead of Christ. They glorify themselves in their do-good religion at the expense of truth.

The institutions of men do not create sincerity towards Christ and his brethren, but to a man-driven denominational agenda. Those within Christianity have men ruling over them instead of Christ.

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” Gideon said to them, “I WILL NOT RULE OVER YOU, AND MY SON WILL NOT RULE OVER YOU; THE LORD WILL RULE OVER YOU.” – Judges 8:22-23

'Hallowed be Thy Brand Name'
'Hallowed be Thy Brand Name'

Reality Check

Many throughout history have followed and bowed down to many false Christ’s happily drinking their flavour of Kool-Aid.

Why are so many blind to all the warnings in Scripture and sit idly by in their pews allowing their fellowship to be built around someone other than Christ?

It is time to contend for the truth and pray that many will come to their senses and realize their vain idolatry of building their worship around the whims of hirelings.

A true disciple of Christ will not partake in a demonic religion that promotes the carnal desires of people who want power, prestige and accolades of men.

True freedom in Christ are people who do not fall for the tactics of those who think they are more special than the other. The ekklesia are brethren of equal standing who build up and encourage one another, rather than fawning after religious pulpiteers and their brand of ‘Jesus.’

The irony of Christianity.
The irony of Christianity.

The harsh reality is that those who are in the antichrist church system call themselves Christians, but they are antichrist. They have been prepped, indoctrinated and prepared to worship a counterfeit Christ by paying their religious celebrities to guide their paths. These elite men will do whatever it takes to keep their power. All those who get in their way are character assassinated by the simple wave of their hand. Their loyal dogs will chase out any opposition. The church ruler is always above the law, morality and ethics. They are demagogues who pull on the heartstrings of the people appealing to their emotions in a premeditated environment for their own selfish gain.

As disciples of Christ, we are no longer part of the worldly entanglements and deceptions of the counterfeit religious church system. The modern Christian cannot represent the true Messiah to the world because they do not have the truth of the genuine Gospel because their man-made traditions have blinded them.

SEE TO IT that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to HUMAN TRADITION, according to the ELEMENTAL SPIRITS OF THE WORLD, and NOT ACCORDING TO CHRIST. – Colossians 2:8

True love (agape) means actively doing what Yahweh prefers by His power and direction through His Son. May we manifest the same love of Christ and the apostles so others will look to the hope of glory too.

Who is holding the upper hand in love ? Might not make much sense my saying , however , it is " God so loved the world He gave..." The ONE given said if you will l o v e ME ... do we want to know what love is?! OK then we have choice to LOVE him and he will reveal himself to us. Once that happened , the rest is obvious " Christ in us the hope of glory." He is manifested in the world ( in us through us )exactly the same as manifested in the body of the man of Gallilie...

This also might be marked wrong; doesn't matter. Has been given to me by the Spirit. HalleluYAH .

Be blessed as much as you can receive and give the same.

The house church movement is a clever deception for those who have been disillusioned with the institutional church system. They want genuine community so they look for smaller groups to find meaning and purpose in their lives.

I believe there is a huge problem with this scenario because when one initially leaves the institution they will carry a huge amount of baggage out of the harlot system with them. They will try to make things happen on their own strength trying to find life and love of the spirit of Christ believing that the home church movement will solve their problems.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. - Acts 2:42-47

When we read these things that were attested among the Ekklesia, it is amazing the love and life in the Spirit that they had. I believe that these things happened naturally among them. There was no set template on what they were supposed to do. The structure of their behavior was the result of the LIFE that was in them.

The home church movement will provide a FORM for those who no longer want to be part of the institutionalized way of doing things, but it won't bring life. LIFE must come first. then we must allow Jesus Christ to form our fellowship. To do it the other way around is a parallel road of what institutional Church system travels. These people now following after the lasted home church guru who artificially tries to make a FORM for them just like their senior-pastor did in Church. Unfortunately, they allow these gurus to be like the priests to them like in the Old Testament.

We are all priest in the New Covenant and there is no justification for the control that these men want to have in their home church movement template. People who come out of the controlling Church system jump right back into following after esteemed men instead looking FIRST to Jesus Christ and His Kingdom.

I liken "Home Church" to having a barbecue for all your bothers and sisters in Christ, but there is always someone there who determines who talks to who. You will never find life in these artificial man-made environments.

We must allow Jesus Christ to guide our path.

The sad fact is the epitome of Christianity and what defines them are templates made by man in artificial environments consisting of traditions that have their origins in the Satanic word called "church" believing that their FORM will bring them life.

Those among the Ekklesia have LIFE and are lead by their Shepherd Jesus Christ. The FORM they take on is the example of Himself.

Yes, it seems I'm mixing some words together that mean different things. I don't take issue with someone saying that the born again 'experience' is their moment of salvation. HOWEVER, I don't believe that one's salvation is realized (that is, guaranteed) until Christ is fully formed in the believer (that is a Christ-like character). Even then, we must still "endure till the end" to be saved. Hope this helps.

hxprox- ok my actual question is this. in one place you say sit all starts with salvation which is incorrect. It starts at being born again.

Then a few sentences later you say work out your salvation with fear and trembling , which is scripturally correct. Salvation is not realized, yea or nay, until the end of life.

      which do you actually believe?

I like what you said. Without the correct tools things will not be worked out correctly. Many are going to be shocked, that's what the pastor said is not going to hold much water.

Celafoe - I'll try to remedy your confusion. When a person is led to Christ by the Holy Spirit, resulting in repentance and accpetance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, that person is a new follower of Christ; another word to use is believer as is frequently used in the Gospels and Acts. When does this new believer (a babe in Christ) become a disciple? This happens when the new believer is fed with sound doctrine ("teach them to obey all that I taught you"). If the new believer is in churchianity, they'll end up deceived - they won't become disciples of Christ and eventually will fall away, maybe much sooner than later. If fed with sound doctrine, the babe in Christ has the opportunity to "work out" their salvation.

I've followed some of the listed names and like Charlie said they are all into something that has roots in the institutional church system. I also agree with Charlie about what has happened to Frank Viola, he is everything to everyone, depending on the group he is addressing. Everything is there for a price and their rationalization and justification for the money sounds just like the rest of the world. They all continue to use the correct Christian buzz words so many fall their message.

What these people are doing is wrong. What their followers do is the same thing they did when they warmed a seat in the institution, they drink what ever is served and assume it is correct. They are apostate.

The number two apostate item out there is the "Christian music" business, they like to call it a ministry. Their words in the songs support the harlot and give the deceived that emotional high they are all looking for.

Rich-- I have never read a word from one of these men that shows they understand scripture. They all endorse their own variation of what you will find in the church system. I am especially disappointed with Frank Viola as I have been watching him for some time. They are not what they want us to think.

      Aaron –

In my search for the truth in all things pertaining to God’s word, His Kingdom and Christ’s Ekklesia, I have come across several prominent “leaders” of the “house/simple/organic Church” movement.

These individuals share many of our beliefs regarding the corporate church and the pulpit masters that run them. However, without exception, all of these men continue to embrace and defend the trinity doctrine and accept the use of the unbiblical and satanic word “church.” They not only refuse to expose the harlot church for what it truly is, they also agree that one can still be saved and continue to associate with and support the great lie of Satan.

The majority of these men openly monetize their “message of change” for profit like the paid hirelings in the churches. They ask for money to support their “ministries” specifically to help pay for websites, technology, travel, seminars, etc. They sell books, subscriptions and anything else they can produce. They speak as if their message is of utmost importance, but to find out that message there is a cost.

It seems to me that what they are doing is not much different that man’s church. They want to create some sort of new denomination that can compete with all the other denominations for loyal followers that will support their efforts financially so they can make a living off the gospel.

What really bothers and confounds me is that much of what they write is on target with respect to the corporate church. But for the life of me, I can’t understand how they can use scripture so well to expose false teachings but totally embrace and defend the trinity and the use of the satanic word “church.”

And whenever I confront them personally about the trinity and the use of the word “church” they just use the same defense of other trinitarians and say that the word “church” has been used so long that it’s now OK to use it in the context of Christianity.

I guess these individuals aren’t really concerned about a complete examination of “church” doctrine that has been developed and injected into the Ekklesia by man over the last two thousand years. Obviously, their “niche ministry” is that they just don’t agree with how the church “assembles” or “who” gets paid to be ministers. Sounds more like envy than a search for the whole truth.

Here is a list of just some of the men who say they want to return to the truth of God's word regarding the Ekklesia but continue to embrace, promote and defend the trinity doctrine, and refuse to drop the unbiblical word “church” from their movement:

      Jon Zens

      Frank Viola

      George Barna

      Eric Carpenter

      Jeremy Myers

      Alan Knox

      Bobby Auner

      Keith Giles

The story before John 9:39 helps to understand.

I'm sure we are thought of as blind men sitting and begging by the religious leaders and religious laity that have become addicted to the ways of the harlot.

Yet a person that was blind one minute can say theses words the next ................................

John 9:31 Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.

No one likes the truth from those they consider sinfully blind.

I am continually thankful as you are that God took the scales from my own eyes and showed me my spiritual blindness. My desire is that others too will see the deception of the antichrist system before it is too late.

I though you might find this verse interesting.

Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” - John 9:39

I appreciate you adding to the discussion. I believe that we become disciples of Jesus Christ when we make the decision the learn from him through the spirit of Christ. Unfortunately, many do the opposite and rely on men to do the thinking for them as they immediately decide to start attending a named building that promotes a denominational agenda instead learning Kingdom principles. It doesn't take long before they start consuming the propaganda of man-made religion attaining the goal of becoming a "certified Christian" once they jump through all the hoops within their religious mould.

I believe that working out our salvation must be in a lifestyle of obedience and submission through the grace of Jesus Christ as we strain and press on towards the goal. Of course, the goal of a disciple is quite different than that of a Christian.

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 3:13-14

      Those are my thoughts.

I'll let you answer to Celafoe's question and what you thought are.

      God Bless.

I agree with everything you have said. All the things you mentioned that are important aspects of Christianity cannot be reconciled with Scripture. This should be evidence enough of their vanity in declaring themselves by who has the most certificates on their walls. In their system, they fawn after the ones who has given themselves the greatest title. Churches create certified denominational Christians according to what man decides their doctrine dictates. They don't care about what God the Father thinks, but give more credence to what their hired pulpiteer says.

The hypocrisy in all that they do is that they will say they don't do it among themselves, but it is clear by their actions within their cookie-cutter religion that they do the complete opposite.

“My people bend their tongues like bows to shoot out LIES. They refuse to stand up for the truth. They only go from bad to worse. They do not know me,” says the LORD. - Jeremiah 9:3

Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters DECEIT. - Proverbs 12:17

Through the insincerity of LIARS whose consciences are seared - 1 Timothy 4:2

Their mouths are full of LIES; they swear to tell the truth, but they LIE instead. - Psalm 144:8

As for you, you whitewash with LIES; worthless physicians are you all. - Job 13:4

The antichrist system is full of lies and deceit and any honest look at what they do in their Church buildings is counterfeit. Unfortunately, many refuse to believe this as they minds have been seared beyond seeing the TRUTH.

Jesus and the Apostles were not afraid to speak truth no matter what the cost. May we as disciples of Jesus Christ do the same.

      God Bless.

Thanks for taking the time to read the article.

There are many who have fallen for the trappings of what is called "Christianity." The problem with this man-made religion is that it uses Biblical terms, but their meanings are completely contrary to the way of Jesus Christ. My hope is that more and more will come to see the hypocrisy of their "esteemed" religion and come out of the harlot Church system. If Christianity is the most popular religion in the world, then why did Jesus say ,

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. - Matthew 7:13

...and then a few verses down Jesus says,

On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I NEVER KNEW YOU; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ - Matthew 7:22-23

As you are well aware, Jesus was speaking about people who give lip service to God claiming to worship Him. Unfortunately, they have missed the mark. Counterfeit Christianity worships in spirit, but deny truth in their tradition. In doing so, it is ALL in vain.

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the TRUE WORSHIPERS will worship the Father in spirit AND truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit AND truth.” - John 4:23-24

The importance of TRUTH is so important that it is repeated twice in these verses.

      God Bless.

I can add only one thing to the definition of a disciple: A disciple is a follower of Christ (we all start there at salvation) who is being led through his/her wilderness journey during which the "issues of the heart" are revealed as we ACTIVELY cooperate with the Holy Spirit, learning how not to grieve Him while having a Christ-like character worked into us. And thus we follow Paul's admonition to "work out your own salvation in fear and trembling".

PandN- One last thing I forgot to mention. There has NEVER been nor shall there ever be a need for a certificate of proof of a true disciple of Christ.

      God bless.

    • profile image

graceinus 3 years ago from those of the Ekklesia

PandN- There is a big difference between a so called christian and a disciple of Jesus Christ. The difference is this, the disciple is a spirit minded individual whereas a so called christians is carnal minded. The carnal mind will only understand those things which they can see, hear, tasteand feel. Or a combination of those five things. A so called christians acts as though they are spirit minded, but yet don't understand the true spirit of God's word. This is one reason churches are denominational. Many within these churches suck up the words from those standing on the other side of the pulpit. The so called clergies who have obtained their degrees in studies in theology at seminary schools thing they have the corner on understanding God's word. However, no seminary school is lead by the Hol Spirit. It is highly unlikely that the Holy Studies is lead by the Holy Spirit if the studies are PAID FOR. Only the carnal mind would pay for something in order to receive. But Jesus said in Matthew 10:8 (NKJV) in part: Freely you have received, freely give. He was talking but the kowledge of the Kingdom. It was a "COMMISSIOM" by Jesus to the disciples to go out a spread the GOPSEL OF THE KINGDOM. Jesus did not tell them to go out and make "CONVERTS."

The disciple, at the time of this statement, had been given the commission by Jesus, to go out in pairs of two's to spread the gospel of the Kingdom of God. This is still the commission that the disciples have today. To spread the Gospel of the Kingdom. Yet, churches believe there commission is to go out and make converts. Once converted they are left to fend for themselves. And those who converted them expect those converts to hold to the standard of their denomination for which they where baptized "INTO". Baptism is into the church. A certificate is issued to show proof of baptism. Again the carnal mind at work here, documented "PROOF" of baptism with a written certificate into the"CHURCH." Now the convert has proof of baptism. Proof in their hand. The carnal mind needs that certificate in the hand. Just like the carnal minded clergy needs the proof of the seminary school completion by hanging there "DEGREE" on their wall to show "PROOF": Again their carnal mind at work here. And not only that, but the seminary education was "PAID" for. Now these so called clergy can get paid for the service to the pew warmers.

Those who are spirit minded individuals understand the free gift of God's word. They understand that their studies are free. Just as Jesus freely gave unto His disciples the knowledge of the Kingdom. He instructed them in the "commission" to go out and make "DISCIPLEs" of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spiritas it is mentioned in Matthew 28:19. And notice in this verses that Jesus did not say, Make sure the new converts get their baptism certificate to show proof.

The Spirit mind of a disciple understands that their baptism is known to God the Father and no proof is required. The true disciples of Christ knows by the spirit that he is sealed by the Holy Spirit and knows proof is not required. The true disciple realizes that true faith was not obtained by one's own efforts but was given faith from God.
