Blood Covenant

Updated on September 1, 2020

The Blood Covenant is a contract.

It is of the utmost importance to understand the Blood covenant between God and man.

The blood covenant is the oldest known form of contract in the human race and it is common in primitive religions.

The blood is the highest price to be paid; if you give your blood for someone you give him the highest price, your life.

The Blood Covenant

No Covenant could be sealed without blood.

Leviticus 17:10-14: Any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who dwell temporarily among them who eats any kind of blood, against that person I will set My face and I will cut him off from among his people [that he may not be included in the atonement made for them].

[Ezek. 33:25.] For the life (the animal soul) is in the blood, and I have given it for you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life [which it represents].

[Rom. 3:24-26.] Therefore I have said to the Israelites, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who dwells temporarily among you eat blood. And any of the Israelites or of the strangers who sojourn among them who takes in hunting any clean beast or bird shall pour out its blood and cover it with dust. As for the life of all flesh, the blood of it represents the life of it; therefore I said to the Israelites, You shall partake of the blood of no kind of flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats of it shall be cut off.

The Blood covenant was used from the beginning of time and is used still today in certain tribes and countries like Africa, China and India.

These men practise blood covenant and it is a binding contract.

These covenants are known, in Africa, never to be broken, no matter what the provocation. If one party breaks the covenant, his own family will kill him. The belief is that no man breaks a blood covenant and lives.

A blood covenant can only be broken by the death of one of the parties.

To Cut Where Blood Flows

Reasons for cutting!

There were different reasons for men to cut a blood covenant.

  • If two men loved (committed to the success, prosperity and protection of) each other (Bible example: David and Jonathan), they would cut a blood covenant for love’s sake.
  • They cut covenant for self preservation when one family or tribe is stronger than the other.
  • They cut covenant with business partners securing a fair deal, ensuring that neither person would take advantage of the other.

These covenants were so sacred that it was kept by the children up to the fourth generation.

The Hebrew word for blood covenant is "berith" and the Greek word "diatheke". Both actually mean - "to cut where blood flows".

Blood covenant is the closest; the most enduring and solemn contract known to man. It absolutely cannot be broken - till death do you part.

As you have figured out, marriage is a blood covenant instituted by God.

How can I say that?

Before God even created us He had the blood covenant in mind. God created us to be with one partner only. When a woman loses her virginity, blood flows, the blood covenant is consummated when the hymen is broken.

This seals the covenant of unity between the two. There is also the spiritual aspect. When a man and a woman unite through intercourse, their spirits unite and become one according to God’s Word. The covenant that is marriage, the unity between man and woman can only be broken by death.

Malachi 2:14: Yet you ask, why does He reject it? Because the Lord was witness [to the covenant made at your marriage] between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously and to whom you were faithless. Yet she is your companion and the wife of your covenant [made by your marriage vows].

It is important to know that pre marital and extra marital intercourse is sin.

If we look at marriage in the light of the above, divorce is punishable by death.

I wonder if it were enforced, how many people will still get married or divorced.

1 Colossians 6:18: Keep on running away from sexual immorality. Any other sin that a person commits is outside his body, but the person who sins sexually sins against his own body.

1 Colossians 10:8: Let us stop sinning sexually, as some of them were doing, and on a single day 23,000 fell dead.
