How old are Humans?

Updated on February 20, 2015

Can the Bible be trusted?

According to mainstream Anthropology Humans, are about 200,000 years old. How do they come up with that guess? According to the Biblical human record humans are around 7,000 years old. Can the Bible be trusted? Some believe that God inspired it's writing, like a boss who dictates a letter to a secretary. Could it make sense to believe in what the Bible says? No human was actually there and in effect we are all putting our faith in something. So whether you believe as the mainstream Anthropologists do or you believe the Bible, lets look at both sides briefly to see if they could ever harmonize. I just want to respectfully share what I know, but it's your choice, obviously, what you put your faith in.

According to science

From studying Anthropology we learn that the main reason scientists believe humans are as old as 200,000 years, is due to carbon dating evidence. when remains(talking about human remains not dinosaurs) are found, they are tested along with the soil or material around them. Also if you look at the layers in the soil, the deeper you go the older things get (logically speaking).

Flood Account in the Bible

Notice what the flood account says.

Genesis 2:5 "No bush of the field was yet on the earth and no vegetation of the field had begun sprouting, because Jehovah God had not made it rain on the earth and there was no man to cultivate the ground. 6 But a mist would go up from the earth, and it watered the entire surface of the ground."

So from this account, had it rained on earth at this point in time? No. The soil was watered by a mist that came up. Now the rains come. Notice what the Bible says;

Genesis 7:11 "In the 600th year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the 17th day of the month, on that day all the springs of the vast watery deep burst open and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.+ 12 And the rain poured down on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights."

What did you notice? Did you notice that the water not only fell from the sky but come up from the ground as well?

What it all means

Now thinking back on what we know from Anthropology, what happens to the soil layers if water comes up from the deep under the soil? What else is coming up with the water? Is it not true that looking at the layers might be misleading? would not older sediment also rise up with the water?

Is it possible that human logic and science is flawed. Science is constantly changing to keep up with findings, but God's word doesn't need to do that because God was there, he himself caused creation. The Bible is not a science book, however when it touches on science it is accurate. Some may say it's outdated. Some of the rules and commandments found in the Bible pertained to an ancient time period, mostly in the Hebrew scriptures. The principles behind those laws are still valuable to understand. The Bible continues to show that God's word has the power to change lives for those who apply the practical and wise principles that are beneficial to us for ever.
