“......for whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother” ~ Matthew 12:50
In today’s Gospel (Matthew 12:46-50), Jesus is once again inviting us to engage in something deeper, something more meaningful. In likening us to his own Mother Mary, our eternal mother, and the 12 men he handpicked to spread the good news and launch his church, the church we know, love and celebrate today, he is in essence showing his glorious generosity and love for all those who choose to do his will.
The prophet Micah in the latter half of today’s 1st Reading (Micah:18-20) sums it up far better than I when he says:
“Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; Who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency, And will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt? You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins; You will show faithfulness to Jacob, and grace to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from days of old.”
A message truly steeped in mercy and love.
Throughout the Gospel, Jesus makes it clear to his followers that not only is he in us, but we are in fact in him. May we always contemplate that amazing truth and in doing so, strive to do the will of such a generous and caring God, a will he implores us to abide by out of pure love.
