Defining our Spiritual Location

Updated on October 25, 2013

Where are you?

“And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?" (Genesis 3:9)

In this determination of how to define my spiritual location: It led me to the account with Adam in the Book of Genesis, when God asked him, Where art thou? Adam was not in the same place he was prior to this call, he had shifted out of location. it wasn't merely his physical location in question here, the spirit realm must have quaked after they ate from the tree, as the repositioning began from the state of perfect providence to sin. Adam nor Eve were positioned any longer under the providence of God after eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they both shifted to under sin and its awful consequences.

Of course, this question came after the two garden dwellers disobedience. Moreover, it still can be examined in a crucial inquiry in defining spiritual locality. Before this incident in the garden, their spiritual location was with God, unafraid of His presence. After sin they hid themselves afraid of His presence. There was a definite shift that transpired. The shifting of spirituality from life to death, and they felt the shift and hid. Alas, Adam had not learned to appreciate or enjoy his spiritual location with God or to live many days abiding under His protection and nor had we prior to salvation. We are being taught how to be found in and with God at all times.

We are on the other side of the cross, yet the question is always applicable. Where is my spiritual location? Where art thou? I hope it is relevant for you too, this question He asked Adam. Questions are usually asked to receive an answer. Before we get to that aspect, God knew where Adam was all the time and what He had done, so why the question?

Adam didn’t know where he was, and all that he had done by disobeying God. The shift from God into sin was rapid and costly. Adam was shifted in a moment from God’s presence and plans and placed in sin. Shifting happens so swiftly and quickly in the universe, and it is as fast as the speed of light, so it seems. We are always moving even when it seems and appears we are standing still. Our minds are always moving, even when the flesh is standing, and sitting still. The thing is to have divine counsel at our disposal and resident in the places of our souls that counteract any wrong thinking and receive the counsel which can quicken us towards God at all times, to ensure that completeness is our goal and that it is fruitful.

You are here, means you are seated with Christ in heavenly places
You are here, means you are seated with Christ in heavenly places

You are seated with Christ

I was blessed to hear and listen to a teaching entitled “Defining your Spiritual Location," and it caused me to think about this premise seriously, and to seek understanding for myself as well. Defining our spiritual location has very little to do with where we are positioned physically, but where we are spiritually speaking.

There is a device used today called Global Positioning System (GPS). It is used globally to determine locations and destinations physically. We have a spiritual GPS lifestyle and it is called God's Positioning Standards, it helps us to determine where we are at all times, and where we live spiritually. The Word of God is the positioning method used for us to determine who we are, whose we are, as well as where we are in alignment to it. The Spirit of God navigates us towards God and our life in Him. Scripture tells us that we are seated with Christ in heavenly places and that our lives are hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:2). So where is our spiritual location, it is in Christ Jesus, in Him we live, move and have our being. Our real life can only be found in Christ.

The Word of God defines our spiritual location as being seated with Christ Jesus in heavenly places.

"And hath raised us up together, and made us to sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 2:6).

We are not physically seated there, but spiritually, but our flesh is positioned in the earth. The earth is the home of the flesh. However, it is not the home of the spirit; our spirits are located in the Kingdom of God, where the King is. Where I live spiritually must govern my holistic life, which includes my soul and flesh. My soul must experientially be in a state of living and experiencing resurrection power which links it to my born again spirit because our spirits have been raised. The mind’s renewal process in indicative of resurrection power raising my thought patterns to the Kingdom of God realm. Transformation of the soul is indicative of the intellect or mind, will, emotions, reasoning, imagination, memory, and conscience experiencing the resurrection systematically.

We need resurrection power

Each area needs the resurrection power of the Lord Jesus Christ, the resurrection principles of the Word of God and the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is raised from the dead and so should our lives be practically embracing that premise. Our spirits have been born again, raised and resurrected to sit in heavenly places, in realms, dimensions and levels where the resurrection power has been made experiential.

We need resurrection power for our souls to rise to the Word of God standards for living and to come into alignment with our spirits already seated with Christ in heavenly places.

Our born again spirits are governed by the resurrection and have been placed above and not beneath. Our souls are experiencing the resurrection every time revelation and light empowers our souls. The Word of God is transforming the soul to the place of renewal from all fallen thinking and soul ties. It is especially essential to heed the Word of God, to hear and listen to all the counsel it renders to us, so that we can receive the instructions we need to live prosperously.

How do I define my spiritual location? I define my spiritual location in the same way or using the same method I would to determine my physical location. Of course it is inane to ask myself where do I live or where am I with any measure of conscious thought, that is not applicable concerning spiritual movements.

I thought specifically about making a call to report an emergency in which I must dial 911. The person who takes the call generally will ask, where is your location? In other words define your location and tell them where you are. You then would give them your place of residence or location.

Then there are those commercials about home security systems where they can actually see on a monitoring device, your location. Additionally, there are CB radio calls, where you will be asked your location. Nevertheless, there are times when the Lord is asking you to define your spiritual location, to ensure that you are aware where you are.

You may say well God is omniscient and omnipresent and why would He need to ask you where you are? It is not for His benefit that you will be or are asked this question, it is for you. Can you tell God your location or define it? Where am I located spiritually? We should be able to speak what the Word of God says of where we are spiritual located, In Christ Jesus.

What was our old address

We lived where Adam's disobedience placed us. Not only did this decision shift Adam and Eve, but everyone thereafter. Sin quaked the entire universe and shifted everything and everyone out of God's Positioning Standards into chaos and disorder.

Where were we located before Christ? We resided in and could be found in trespasses and sins and God's Positioning Standards had to give us new directions for life. Our old residence was in trespasses and sins, that was our old address and location. We do not live there anymore.

“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in times past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherein he loved us. Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:1-6 KJV).

This epistle tells us that before salvation we used to reside in trespasses and sins, but that we are quickened, shifted and repositioned by resurrection power to heavenly places and that this is our spiritual location. Quickened in verse 1 is the Greek word zoopoieo pronounced dzo-op-oy-eh-o, which means to vitalize or make alive. It is also the operative word in these verses. Being quickened is movement and is operational, and there was notable activity.

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.

"And he said, Go forth and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And behold, there came a voice unto him, and said" What doest thou here, Elijah? (I Kings 19:11-13).

This questioning by God happened throughout Scripture. The prophet Elijah had just given instructions which destroyed the prophets of baal, and Jezebel was on his trail, selling wolf tickets, telling others to tell the prophet that the same time tomorrow that he would be dead like those prophets. The prophet ran for refuge, eventually ending up in a cave and God asking him “What are you doing here, Elijah? Of course the omniscience and omnipresence of God says otherwise and that the Lord knew where he was, but, God wanted the Prophet Elijah to define his spiritual location, which was always trusting God, everywhere he went and in everything he did. Yet this shift was known by God, He just wanted the prophet to realize that there had been a shift. The prophet had shifted direction which changed his location.

Where can I flee?

King David intricately knew that wherever he made his bed, that God was there. He asked God, where shall I go from Your Spirit or where can I flee from Your presence. (Psalm 139:7-10). This is a kingdom principle we too must ask our self, where am I at all times and to know how to answer. It is essential is defining our individual spiritual location.

Where we are located in the Kingdom of God is vastly different than where we are in the Church. There is Church business and there is Kingdom business. All Church business has to do with the administrative up-keeping and maintaining of the buildings and ensuring that spiritual health is being addressed, and programs are adhered to and all of them are good directives. But when asked to define a spiritual location, will we answer the name of the Church we attend or will that answer be my spiritual location is in the Kingdom of God, where Jesus is the King, who is preparing me for how to live in the Kingdom of Heaven. This is a shifting that is now going on. There has been a tremendous shift of location.

The spirit in the Kingdom of God has the authority that gives us dominion over realms, spheres, and regions, there are demographics which you defy and are an exception to. We are in spiritual warfare, which is the counsel of another mind other than the Word of God. The powers that are evil, have no more control over our mind when we choose the counsel of God’s Word. When the enemy comes in like a flood, he comes in to negotiate and is looking for power to operate your soul. The soul is an operational system within us that needs only navigation from God. Scripture tells us that when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of God raises a standard; which is not a standard they can follow, because they choice not to follow God.

The standard is raised to the Godhead. Also remember that when you don’t take your place in the Kingdom of God that demonic powers will try to take it and are negotiating with you for the seat of power, your soul. With this type of seduction you must discern this strategy and be willing to answer no deal, by putting your spiritual locator on which sends the message loud and clear to the satanic and demonic world. I am in Christ Jesus; my life is hid in God. In the multitude of counselors there is safety. Every principle in the Word of God is our counselor, advising us what to do at all-times. We are learning how to utilize these principles, so that we are not governed by the principalities and powers that govern darkness. We are in the Kingdom of light and revelation in how to live righteously; by seeking first the Kingdom of God so that all things can be added to us is our mission. We must first determine if we are seeking the Kingdom, and then we will be spiritually found.

Mantles give you access to Kingdoms. Jesus’ mantle has granted us the access to the Kingdom of God, the Word of God gives us instruction in how to operate there and the Spirit of God teaches us how to carry out those instructions and empowers us to do so. There are mantles of prophets which are subject to the prophets which bless all who will heed prophecy. Even Jesus’ earthly mantle could not be torn, we should endeavor not to tear it spiritually either by causing division. Power can’t be created by us, nor can it be destroyed, but it can be and has been transferred to us to live righteously in the Kingdom of God. The mantle of Jesus Christ is what covers our nakedness, unlike the temporary covering Adam and Eve sought under fig leaves, when sin exposed them.

These are exploits which ensure identity in Christ as well as where we reside. Where is our spiritual residence? It is in the Kingdom of God in heavenly places. This shift took place the day we received Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. Experientially this is where we operate from, heavenly places. What a paradox, right. We are physically positioned in the earth, our souls are being renewed and our born again spirits reside in heavenly places. This is awesome how multifaceted we really are through God's mercy and grace..
