Samson is the reason

There Te misconseptions regarding Judges chapters 13, 14, and 15 the story is told of how Samson was chosen to be a deliverer of the Israelites as one of their judges. (Please read in your leisure because it is quite fascinating). He caused so much damage and killed so many of their enemies the Philistines that their leaders were determined to destroy him. They obviously took note that Samson loved women because they chose one to cause his downfall. Her name was Delilah and she was devious. The name of the new Greenleaf spin-off is going to be Delilah and if you are not sure who she was continue to read on.

The deceit begins

The Message Bible-Judges 16 :1-2 Samson went to Gaza and saw a prostitute. He went to her. The news got around: “Samson’s here.” They gathered around in hiding, waiting all night for him at the city gate, quiet as mice, thinking, “At sunrise, we’ll kill him.”

3 Samson was in bed with the woman until midnight. Then he got up, seized the doors of the city gate and the two gateposts, bolts and all, hefted them on his shoulder, and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.

This indicates that Samson's enemies knew he loved to be in bed with women. They watched his every move until they found just the right way to take him down. The went to Delilah and offered 100 shekels of silver from each of them if she would find out the secret of the strongman's strength. I can just imagine her stroking his body and his hair, using all her feminine wiles in order to get what she desired.

Samson plays games

The Bible says Samson toyed with his latest lover and told her, If he were tied up with seven bowstrings, made from fresh animal tendons, he would become weak, The Philistines brought Deliah seven bowstrings, and she tied Samson up. He easily snapped out of them and the Philistines who were lying in wait had to leave.

Delilah begged and pleaded and clearly was becoming fed up because she could see all those silver coins coming her way. This time Samson told her that he would lose his strength if he were tied up with new ropes. Once again she cried out that the Philistines were upon him and once again he broke free,. One has to wonder why Samson did not catch on to her plot but he never did. Shew coaxed, begged, and pleaded again and this time he told her that he would lose his strength if she wove seven braids of his hair into the fabric of a loom. Once he was asleep she di as he required and again told him the Philistines were upon him. For a third time, he broke free. By now, Delilah and the Philistine leaders were probably at their wit's end and wanted this charade to be over with.

The She devil has her way with the strong man

The Message Bible shares the following in chapter 16. 15 She said, “How can you say ‘I love you’ when you won’t even trust me? Three times now you’ve toyed with me, like a cat with a mouse, refusing to tell me the secret of your great strength.”16-17 She kept at it day after day, nagging and tormenting him. Finally, he was fed up he couldn’t take another minute of it. He spilled it. Delilah worried Samson night and day, begging and pleading until she wore him down, The Jewish Talmud suggests she was a prostitute and used sex to get him to tell her the correct answer. Finally, she broke him down and he told her his strength was in his hair. This time she knew he had told the truth and she called for the philistine leaders again. They showed up with the money they had promised her and while Samson was asleep on her lap they shaved his hair. I heard a preacher say that the reason Samson fell asleep in her lap was probably that they had just engaged in the sexual act or oral sex but the Bible is not clear on why he went to sleep.

The death of Samson

This time when Delilah said, “The Philistines are on you, Samson!” He woke up realizing that his strength was gone. His enemies grabbed him and put him in iron shackles. They put out his eyes and forced him to work grinding meal just like an animal. During this time his hair was growing back but obviously no one noticed. The Philistines were so happy to have finally captured their tormentor that they held a great celebration. They paraded Samson in front of a filled coliseum and made fun of him. Samson prayed to the Lord to give him his strength one more time and asked a child to lead him to the two large columns that were holding up the building. He shouted, "Let me die with the Philistines" and when he pushed the columns the entire building came down. In his death, Samson is said to have killed more Philistines that when he was living. Delilah is never mentioned again. A 1949 Movie titled Samson and Delilah starred Victor Mature and Heddy Lamar. In this version, Delilah is in the coliseum and dies with the Philistines. While this is possible neither the Bible nor history indicate that it is true.
