Crazed Cannibal, Drug Induced Zombie, or Demonized Man Story (part 1)
News Story of Cannibal Attack in Miami
Demons, devils, & hell!
Zombie, drug-induced madman, or demon possessed cannibal
Let me just clarify that my motive for this hub is not just to draw viewers through sensational articles, but to examine current events in the light of a Biblical worldview, and perhaps help myself and others make sense of seemingly senseless acts. I'm sure there are many of us that just shake our heads in disbelief as we see and hear of what's going on in the world around us. News stories of people killing co-workers, family members, school classmates seem to be a common occurrence on a weekly basis.
While I am a believing Christian, we're going to look at the issue of whether demons truly exist in the modern world we live in. Are demons responsible for some of the insane behavior we see in the world? Or is this just superstitious poppycock leftover from a time before doctors came to understand the psychiatric issues of mankind?
Many of you have probably viewed the story that I read at Yahoo News on 5/29/2012 about the naked man who was cannibalizing the face off of another naked man. While there is a mountain of speculation as to why the man was exhibiting such bizarre behavior, depending on where you read the story. Speculations run from him being a zombie, or having a rare disease, to that he over-dosed on a new brand of LSD. Recently, it has been determined that this man turned cannibal was not under the influence of this new form of LSD or "bath salts."
It was in the Reuters article online where they state that both men were naked under an overpass of the MacArthur Causeway at 2 pm, when a passing bicyclist flagged a passing police officer to stop this horrendous attack. After the officer ordered the cannibal to stop eating the other man's face off, the attacker merely lifted his head and growled at the cop who then shot him. Having been shot once did not stop the attacker, so the officer fired several more times until the attacker was dead!
The police spokesman reported that this was probably due to a LSD overdose, and said that they have had four other incidents of nude, extremely bizarre behavior with individuals showing super human strength from this new type of LSD. He also states that as much as 80% of the victims face had been consumed. Although it's uncertain whether or not indiviuals involved in the other incidents exhibited cannibalism as well.
While many of the online articles propose that this is the start of the zombie-apocalypse, this is probably a result of watching or playing too many games involving zombies. The real motive and if there were drugs involved are yet to be determined. The act of cannibalism and the animal-like behavior of growling at the policeman is what leads me to believe that the attacker was possibly under demonic influence. The door through which this demon possession may have occurred could very well have been by taking this "new LSD," which is a new designer drug commonly known as bath salts.
Let's take a look at Revelations 9:20-21 But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to turn from their evil deeds. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood- idols that neither see nor hear nor walk! And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their immorality or their thefts. (NLT)
First of all, this is specifially referring to the tribulation period of the last days. What I would like to point out here is that the people here are unrepentant of their sins, and that they basically worship material goods or riches as idols. By doing this, they are in effect worshiping demons; as they are behind every idol to receive your worship or attention, even when that idol is an inanimate object. Secondly, the Greek word Pharmakia that above is translated as witchcraft is more commonly translated as sorcery which is defined as the mixing and administering of potions. Here god's word is tying drug use to sorcery and the worship of demons.
For those of you who have read and understand the four gospels, you are more than likely to be familiar with how much of Jesus's earthly ministry pertained to the casting out of demons or unclean spirits. Most Bible scholars agree that as much as a third of Jesus's acts involved casting out unclean spirits. Quite often this had to be done prior to their being healed of disease or illness.
Let us examine one such example of Biblical possession in Matthew 8:28-34, where Jesus met two demon possessed men.(Short rabbit trail) First of all, this confirms that different men wrote these from their own point of view, although still inspired by the Holy Spirit. Matthew was the only one to point out that there was originally two possessed men, although only one man submitted himself to Jesus for deliverance from these evil spirits.
Authors Luke and Mark only acknowledge one demon possessed man, whether because they didn't notice the other or felt it unimportant we are not told. This generally would point to the veracity of these authors, that they didn't just copy their stories, but wrote them as they had seen them or how the Spirit of God inspired them to record the events. Yet, they agree on all the relevant facts. Hence, it confirms where Jesus said that out of the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established!
Now, let's turn over to Luke 8:26-39 and take a look at some things that Luke records. In verse 27 it starts with; As Jesus was climbing out of the boat, a man who was possessed by a demon came out to meet him. Homeless and naked, he had lived in the cemetary for a long time. As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell to the ground screaming, "Why are you bothering me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Please, I beg you, don't torture me!" For Jesus had already commanded the evil spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was shackled with chains, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon's power. (NLT)
There are many things to take note of here, first of all is that Jesus realized that evil spirits were real and were the main cause of the man's problems. He also spoke directly to the evil spirit, commanding that it leave the man. I speculate that it was of the man's freewill that he knelt before Jesus, but it was the evil spirit that protested against Jesus' intervention, and begged not to be tortured. These clearly confirm the existence of demons and the reality that they can invade our lives in a extremely detrimental way, even taking control of our faculties and speech, also the super human strength required to break the chains.
Let's suppose that the man's will is what brought him to kneel before Jesus and brought about his deliverance. This is likely the case, since the other demon possessed man is not mentioned again by Matthew, or mentioned at all by Luke or Mark. Generally, people were not healed running away, but when they presented themselves to Jesus in an act of faith, whether for healing or deliverance.
When you read on in Luke, you will see that the demons beg to enter into the pigs. Which when allowed the the herd of pigs jumped off a cliff and the pigs drowned. This doesn't mean that the spirits existence ended, merely the pigs died, we are not told what happened to the evil spirits from there on. But, I would like to point out three things from this, that the man exhibited super human strength in breaking shackles made to hold a man, that he was naked and living like an animal away from civilization. In other words, he showed animal like behavior and excessive strength.
There are definite similarities with the earlier account of a naked man, under a bridge who's eating another man, and merely growls at an authority figure trying to get him to stop. I'm not for a second claiming that I know this man to have been demon possessed, only saying that it's quite evident that he was exhibiting traits of someone that is demon possessed.
This radical, animal-like behavior which demonstrates no normal traits of humanity; such as cannibalism seem to be more and more prevalent lately. Look at how many children and women are kidnapped, raped, and murdered. Doesn't this appear to be of demonic influence? Jesus speaks about the days before his coming that it will be like the days of Noah or Lot. If you go search it out, you will see that those were days where violence was everywhere, sexual immorality was the norm, and men did whatever they saw as right in their own eyes.
In 2 Timothy 3:1 it says; You should also know this, Timothy, that in the last days their will be very difficult times. (NLT) Other translations translate the "difficult" as "perilous" or even "ragingly insane." Do we think for a moment that there are less demons and evil spirits around today as there was in the time of Jesus' work on the earth.
Revelation 12: 7-9 Then ther was war in heaven. Michael and the angels under his command fought the dragon and his angels. And the dragon lost the battle and was forced out of heaven. This great dragon- the ancient serpant called the Devil, or Satan, the one decieving the whole world-was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.
Rev. 12:12 Rejoice O heavens! And you who live in the heaven, rejoice! But terror will come on the earth and the sea. For the Devil has come down to you in great anger, and he knows he has little time. V. 17 Then the dragon became angry at the women, and he declared war against the rest of her children-all who keep God's commandments and confess that they belong to Jesus.
Most of this seems to need very little explanation, that Satan and his demonic hordes will be cast down to earth and cause chaos and violence in the last days. For those of you that have never looked into the face of someone given over to evil or demonic control, you've been blessed to be so sheltered. I can assure you that this evil is very real and destroys peoples' lives, as I have seen it firsthand. If God is willing, I will continue this discussion at a later date.
Recently, another man was arrested in Atlanta demonstrating similar behavior; such as animal behavior, exhibiting super-human strength, screaming gibberish and threatening to eat the police. After not responding to the use of pepper spray, police had to Tase the man 4-5 times before they could subdue him. At the hospital, the man again went berserk, police had to Tase him a total of fourteen times before he was under control. As shocking as this seems, I again ask if this behavior is just from the drugs or demonic behavior from the drug use?
