This devotional was written for the youth in my congregation. If you've come across it, may it bless you.

May this devotional series bring you closer to Elohim.
May this devotional series bring you closer to Elohim.

Welcome to this devotional series for youth. I hope you enjoy this journey with me as I attempt to help you dig into the Word of God more frequently and, perhaps, inspire you to think about it in ways that you may not have done so before.

This series came about because I was asked to create a set of devotionals that corresponded with the curriculum that is being used by the youth in my congregation. This is my humble attempt to do that. As you read through each devotional, I pray that it will deepen your relationship with a loving God who continues to search for ways to have a relationship with us despite our shortcomings.

May you be blessed on your journey.

Unfamiliar Terms (Glossary) - The devotionals will be using the Tree of Life version of the Bible which used many of the original Hebrew words. You can find the meaning of words used in the devotionals here.

Unfamiliar Terms (Glossary)

If you are reading these devotionals, you may be unfamiliar with some of the terms used. The Living Vine translation of the Bible is used widely in the congregation that I attend, therefore, it is the translation I will use most often when creating these devotionals. This translation uses many of the original Hebrew words, and as such, you may be unfamiliar with their meaning. To be honest, I have to look them up sometimes myself.

To make it easier, I am including a list of terms that you may run across as you read these devotionals. This list is dynamic and I will be adding to it as I use these terms.

Adonai - a divine name that signifies sovereignty and is translated as "Lord." Adonai means master and underscores the authority of God.

Adonai Elohim - Lord God

Belial - a Hebrew word that is personified as the devil in Jewish and Christian writings. Alternate spellings include Belhor, Baalial, Beliar, Beliall, Beliel and Berial.

B'rit Chadashah - the New Testament in Hebrew

Cohanim - Jewish priests belonging to the line of Aaron.

Cohanim - plural of Cohanim

Elohim - a name for God used frequently in the Hebrew Bible. Elohim emphasizes strength and creative power.

El Shaddai – God Almighty

Gemara - a rabbinical commentary on the Mishnah, forming the second part of the Talmud.

HaMashiach – the Messiah

Hasidic – Also spelled Chasidic; having to do with Hasidim/Chasidim which is a Jewish mystic movement founded in 18th century that maintains that God’s presence was in all of your surroundings, with a belief that a person should serve God in every word and deed.

Jehovah - English for Yahweh (see Yahweh)

Kabbalah – an obscure and mysterious discipline, method and school of thought in Jewish mysticism; a set of obscure and mysterious teachings whose purpose was to explain the relationship between God’s creation and the unchanging, eternal God; it reached its height of influence in the Middle Ages and continues to be significant in the Hasidic movement.

kedoshim - the saints; also, the name of the 30th weekly Torah Portion.

midrash – a particular teaching with the Mishnah, expanding on incidents in the Bible to explain principles or teach moral lessons.

midrashim - plural of Midrash

Mishnah – traditional Jewish oral law that is the first part of the Talmud which was written down around 200 AD

Ruach - a Hebrew word that means spirit. When translated into English, it may mean "wind," "mind" or "Breath." During creation, God breathed into man. In this regard, Ruach may mean Breath of Life or Breath of God.

Ruach HaKodesh - is Hebrew for the Spirit of YHWH - the Holy Spirit. It means Divine Spirit or Divine Inspiration.

shalom - peace

Shavuot – Pentecost

Talmud - a compilation of Jewish writings and tradition concerning civil/ceremonial law and legend made up of the Mishnah (text) and the Gemara (commentaries)

Tanakh - Hebrew for the Old Testament

Torah - the law of God as revealed to Moses and recorded in the first five books of the Hebrew scriptures (the Pentateuch).

Yahweh - the Hebrew for God, often abbreviated to YHWH (yod hey vav hey). The name is regarded by the Jewish people as too sacred to say, and it is often written as YHWH because the vowel sounds are uncertain, and because of this is often pronounced as "yod hey vav hey," the Hebrew names for each of the letters.

Yeshua - The Hebrew name for Jesus. Yeshua means, "Yahweh is Salvation."

Yeshua HaMashiach – Yeshua the Messiah

Devotionals in Order of Writing

Below you will find a list of the devotions in the order that they were written.

Devotionals for the Class - 1st Quarter

This is where the first quarter of devotionals can be found. You'll find devotionals that correspond with a given daily lesson or homework for the first quarter (the first 3 months) in the next three sections. Right now only three per week are provided. I am doing this so that I can stay ahead of the class. My intent is to eventually fill out the chart with a devotional for each day of the week for the full two-year curriculum. That's a lot of devotionals, so please bear with me as I work my way through. By the grace of God, it will happen quickly.
