Disciple, what does this word mean? By definition a disciple is a follower, one who spread the word of God such as Religious Education Teachers, Priests, Preachers and so on. These are individuals who put God first in their lives.

Mark 8:34 -- and when he called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, who ever will come after me, let him deny himself and take up this cross and follow me.

When I was younger the teachings of the Church were limited. I only heard the word disciple in relationship to Jesus 12 Apostles. I thought they were the only ones who existed. I was quite surprised when at the age of 38 I discovered the truth. I now know that, we are all God's disciples. This contradicts what my parents taught me. We were shouldn't be followers. Their favorite saying was, : If she jumped off a bridge would you jump too"? I bet some of you can relate to that. Those comments and prior teachings have been passed on from generation to generation. And yes, I found myself passing those teachings on to my children not knowing any different.

I know differently now. We are all followers and leaders, the leaders and followers. The roles depend on the circumstances. Every day of our lives the roles of follower , leader change. Recently I had to show my Manager how to processes order for a specific because their purchase orders differ from our standard order entry. During that time I was leading her. The majority of the time she leads me. As parents we lead our children. The oldest child for the most part is the leader for their siblings. Sometimes we are given the opportunity to choose which role we want. In fact we are luckier than the inhabitants of other countries. We have the freedom of choice. Sometimes I sit back allow myself the freedom of being a follower especially if another person is more knowledgeable. For instance, I am a First Responder at work along with a handful of other employees. I haven't been called upon their to assist a person in need but there have been times outside of work that I've rushed to someone who needed medical assistance. In that moment I am the leader yet when the EMT's arrive I then become the follower because they are more knowledgeable.

There are times however that the roles or tasks at hand are decided for us. I would not choose to deal with the loss of a loved one, have to buy a new car after an accident yet that's part of our lives and we adjust. In fact, I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. I was meant to sit here today, creating this hub I have become an instruments of God's peace. Who knows, someone may read this and begin as half full instead of half empty. If this hub helps someone it's all worth it. Here and now I am spreading the word of God using my words and sometimes through my actions. I once heard that by helping others we are caring for God. God rejoices the times one of his children assist the less fortunate. By serving at soup pantry, making care packages for shut ins, collecting toys for the needy, stopping for a standard motorist, each time you do these kind of deeds you are caring for God. There are a number of ways we can be one of God's disciples. Being the shoulder to lean on, sitting on the phone when someone just needs to talk, washing dishes, preparing meals, babysitting. I try to help when others need me. Have you ever preformed a selfless act? Have you helped someone without anyone knowing? Something as simple as a smile can make the difference to another person. I have a challenge for you. Become one of God's disciples, show others through your words and actions that you are following in Jesus' footsteps. Assist the elderly in your neighborhood. Carry in their groceries, shovel snow, offer to wash their car, go around your neighborhood and pick up litter, make a donation to the local food pantry. What ideas do you have in mind? I'd like to hear them, who knows, you could teach me something.

Catzgendron: Thanks for this article it is lovely. Disciple also means "Student".

Jesus disciples often referred to Jesus as Master or Teacher.

How to be a student and then put into practice what you have learned.

Thank you for your comments. One of the first thing I notice on a person is their smile. I have been that person who had a rough day and a smile especially on a child warms my heart. I completely agree with you. I pretty much talk to anyone and there are times I realize that all that person needed was someone to listen.

My smile is the first thing that I give.People don't realize how relaxing it can be to the person recieving it.We never know the trails and tribulations of that person who may be feeling alone and lost.I also like to start conversations with others [that I may or may not know], sometimes all someone might need is a listening ear.And always givng a seat to the elderly or pregnant woman or mom with kids on a bus.....
