Do Ghosts Exist or are They a Figment of our Imagination?

Updated on October 10, 2011

We love ghosts, don’t we? Of course, not in the sense of loving them per se, but we are intrigued by the concept of ghosts and want to find out if they are for real. Some claim to have seen ghosts, but unfortunately (or fortunately) I haven’t come across one as yet. I would’ve dismissed ghosts out of hand based on my own lack of encounters with them, but I’ve had friends since childhood who’ve claimed to have encountered them. Of course, I would chide them for their “vivid imagination” then. But, deep down, I’ve always wondered if there was any truth at all to their claims!! You can never stop wondering – can you??

Throughout human history, we seemed to have believed in ghosts. Our ancestors claimed to have encountered them, just as much as some of us claim to have in today’s times. So, could there be something real about ghosts? Are they more than our imagination? Do they have any basis in science? All interesting questions, but I don’t think anyone has a convincing answer to all of the above as yet. If they have a convincing answer, I would love to hear it.

Ghosts - A Figment of Our Imagination?

I am not a ghost hunter or a researcher and hence don’t know about any studies that have proven as yet that ghosts exist. My personal belief is that they are a figment of our imagination. There have been situations where I’ve been in creepy surroundings, where I got the feeling that there was someone else following me or around the corner. Also, if I were put in a room blindfolded with some howling and creepy sounds, I am sure I would imagine ghosts being around. So, I do think the mind is capable of playing tricks on us. Perhaps, in some of us, that capacity is more pronounced and they are more susceptible to hearing things or seeing things or drawing inferences.

I believe it is also true that if you are someone who wants to believe in ghosts, you would be more likely to see ghosts than a skeptic. After all, the definition of ghosts changes from person to person. Perhaps, it is our mind that creates the ghosts, irrespective of whether they exist in real or not. In that respect, I think ghosts can only be a figment of our imagination. Perhaps, we have a need to believe (as humans) in things paranormal. Perhaps, we just love to believe that there is something more than meets the eye.

Thanks samboiam for dropping by and for your comments. I feel similarly. Even though I am not too inclined to believe in ghosts, without proof, I am hooked to ghost stories!!!

I do not know how much I believe in ghosts, spirits and such. But I know I love to hear the stories.
