Do We Have Guardian Angels?
The Bible and Guardian Angels
Are Guardian Angels Real?
In the Old Testament, Israel had the archangel (Michael) assigned to look after it. The Jews fully developed the belief in guardian angels during the time between the Old and New Testament periods, and that iconic belief has carried forward for centuries. Can you picture cartoons with characters with an angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other? Believe it or not, there is more to history than Hollywood when it comes to this belief. Some early church fathers believed that each person had not only a good angel assigned to him/her but a demon as well.
The Bible indicates that angels attentively oversee the wishes of our Father in heaven. This active duty or oversight seems to come more from God than from the angels. After all, God alone is omniscient. He sees all believers at every moment; He alone knows when one of us needs intervention by an angel. The Bible clearly states that God uses angels to minister to us. He uses angels as He uses us, not out of necessity. He, in no way, needs people or angels to accomplish His goals, but He chooses to use us.
In the Old Testament, it states that God told Moses, “I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice… my authority resides in him.” Additionally, Daniel speaks of an angel guarding over him, protecting him from hungry lions. Yes, guardian angels do exist. In fact, the Catholic Church sets aside October 2nd to honor these angelic beings who protect people from spiritual and physical harm and inspire us to abide by God’s commandments and wishes.
