ESP or Extrasensory Perception
ESP is also known as the sixth sense. Sometimes humans or even animals are able to know about an event that is still to happen. This happens in many ways such as through dreams, visions, feelings etc.
A classic case of extrasensory perception is that of a woman named Mrs. Elizabeth Denton in the year 1861. She was once standing on the platform of a station at Joliet, IllinoisU.S.A., waiting for a train. She was with her two children at that time. When the train arrived, she got in and tried to find vacant seats. To her dismay she found that all the seats were fully occupied and there was not even a single vacancy in any of the coaches. The amazing fact is that when Elizabeth had boarded the train, there was not even a single passenger in it as they had all alighted from the train to seek refreshments at the Illinois station. Yet Mrs Elizabeth saw that the whole train was occupied. After a while, to her astonishment, the passengers that she had seen in the train slowly started to disappear as if they had been engulfed by darkness. When the real passengers that had gone to seek refreshments came back, she was shocked to notice that most of them were those whom she had seen in the train. There was no explanation to this experience that she had. Did she travel back in time?
This report cited above cannot be considered as a hoax because of two reasons. One is that Elizabeth had keenly studied the dresses worn by those people and knew them to every detail. The other fact is that she used to have a lot of experiences relating to ESP and her husband Professor Willliam F. Denton endorsed this fact. There are many other such reports that speak for the phenomena of ESP, present not only in humans but also in animals.
An experiment done by researchers on a dog showed that the animal always used to know about the arrival of the master from work before the master even started from his workplace. He used to go near the main door of the house and would sit there until his master came home. Once when his master started from his workplace early, the dog still came to know about his arrival, a considerable time before he could reach home. He found his dog at the door as usual. His wife then told him that the dog had been adamant enough to sit at the door before his arrival and would not come back even when she tried.
Scientist J.B. Rhine has done extensive research on this. He works at the DukeUniversity. Working with his colleagues, he has formulated many tests which can examine the truth that lies in the ESP phenomenon.
In one such test he gives to his test subjects a deck of well shuffled cards. He then asks his subjects to relax themselves and concentrate the powers of their mind. He then asks them to forecast the sequence in which the cards have been placed without seeing the cards. The results of these tests have been amazing. More than the normally possible number of people, were able to predict the sequence of cards correctly. This says a lot in itself.
It has also been found that twins communicate between themselves in many ways. These siblings might also share powers of mutual ESP. There has been no such straightforward evidence but there still are some clues that hint in this direction. This type of connection is mostly found in Siamese twins (those twins who have not been properly separated in their mother’s womb). Another fact that has been found and is being currently investigated with the help of exhaustive examination is that family members also tend to share mutual ESP more than friends or other known people.
Have you ever had an ESP related experience?
Precognition and Telepathy , Vital Parts of Extrasensory Perception
Precognition means knowledge of the future. This subject also comes under the study of extrasensory perception. Since time immemorial, people have been witnessing this phenomenon. Precognition comes to a person in many ways such as dreams, visions etc. Sometimes some people having this power see things or events of the future which might be of distressing nature. These people can perceive events that are still to happen either through dreams or some other feelings. But in today’s world nobody takes such people seriously.
Something like this happened with an Irish medium Eileen Gerrett in the 1920s. The civil aviation at that time was in a process of building an airship namely R-101. Eileen had a dream that an airship had burst into flames, engulfed by raging fire and crashed to the ground. She also dreamt that this incident had killed a lot of people. She related this premonition of hers to the chief of civil aviation, Sir Sefton Branker. All she received was serious criticism and was badly mocked, until the fateful event really took place. The R-101 spaceship crashed killing 45 people and Sir Sefton Branker himself. This flight was scheduled to reach India. The R-101 crashed in France.
J.W. Dunne who was a British aeronautical engineer used to have a lot of premonitions. According to him, while we are sleeping our brain somehow taps knowledge about the external world (both tangible and intangible) which it cannot do while we are awake.
Another part of extrasensory perception is telepathy. It means the mutual communication of thoughts between people without using the ways of communication such as speaking or body gestures. It is a way in which people who are away from each other can come to know what the other one is thinking. There are many skeptics who do not believe in telepathy or ESP altogether, but strong evidences have been established that prove the presence of this phenomenon.
Dr. Karl E. Zener has been working on research of telepathy. His specially designed tests have produced astonishing results, which show that telepathic phenomena do exist. He had special cards known as Zener cards. These contain symbols made on one side (symbols like a square, circle, star etc.). These cards are kept upside down and the subject under examination is said to predict which card contains what symbol.
This test has produced results which are enough to prove the existence of telepathy. The success rate of this test is about 52% whereas the percentage of coincidence in this case would only contain a probability of 4%.
Whatever the truth is, there is one thing for sure, so much of evidence cannot be peremptorily dismissed.
