Ego is the greatest obstacle!
Ego, body, mind and SELF.
EGO is the biggest obstacle in any body’s life. Ego is subtle. How it envelops an individual is shrouded in mystery. All philosophical works talk of removal of Ego in order to gain the self. There is no individual bereft of ego. To certain extent, ego is an essential evil. Ego renders personality to an individual. But if you are intent on getting freedom from the never ending cycle of births and deaths, it is necessary that you should relinquish this negative quality. Ego rises only when there is a corresponding body. Body consciousness gives life to Ego. For instance, if somebody abuses you, your immediate reaction is anger. You feel that you are abused without any reason. First you feel that you are the physical form and you feel you are separate from others. Individuality is really Ego. Forms are many but God is ONE. Forms are conceived by human mind. Hence one feels that one form is different from others.
Saibaba says, “Understand the Unity behind the seeming Diversity. He says, “Cows are many but milk is One. Likewise the SELF which is the indweller of each body is one and the same. The seeming division arises due to physical barrier. There is an example given in the scriptures. There are many numbers of pots. But the sky in the pot is one with the outer sky. Once the pot is broken, the seeming barrier created by the pot also goes and the outer sky is found to be one with the sky inside the pot. There is one more example. Keep any number of pots filled with water in the daylight. The sun above is reflected in the water in each pot as a separate one. What you see is the reflection of the One Sun above. But each reflection reveals one sun. Likewise God is reflected in each individual consciousness and this we term it as the SELF of the individual. We can say that the formless God is subtler than the ether. We know that the ether is everywhere in space. Because of the subtlety, it pervades the Cosmos. When the Self is the subtlest of all, then we can understand that there is no place where the self is absent. IT IS. No other definition holds good. Since there is no vacant space devoid of SELF, we can assert that the SELF is EVER PRESENT. These are all the sublime Truths explained in various scriptures in Hinduism. Secondly when the mind becomes quiescent, the SELF alone IS. But there is a great delusory power of Maya arising out of the Ego filled mind which hides the SELF and project the Universe instead. This subtle point can be clarified by an example. In twilight, we walk through a path. Suddenly we find there is a silhouette of a snake in the middle of the path. Our heart misses a beat and we stop there fearing harm from the coiled snake on the path. Fortunately some body comes there with a torch light. In the light we want to see what kind of snake is lying. We ask the passerby to focus the light on the particular spot. Oh! It is only a coil of rope left by somebody. Now our fear vanishes and we proceed on the path without any fear of the snake. Now let us analyze the situation. All the while there was only a rope. We got disillusioned due to poor light and imagined a snake there. When the light is focused, we understand that it is only a rope. Likewise our mind creates many illusions and covers the Self with the picture of the Universe. All along, there is only SELF. When the light of wisdom dawns on the individual, he become wise and see things in its own reality. Rest in next hub.
