Fairies or Faeries, Elves and Pixies in ASCII Text Art

That Grrl profile image

Laura makes ASCII art, using MS Notepad. (Since 1998). She is currently exploring adding colour to the plain text to make postcards.

I created the elf and the little fairy which I have put here first. The rest are collected from other sites, forums and resources online. I started making my own ASCII art in 1998. At that time the ASCII art newsgroup was busy and full of artists creating new art, tweaking and diddling the art created by others. There was a great sharing of ideas then.

The newsgroups have been moved to Google Groups now. The traffic is mainly spam and the groups which don't get a ton of spam aren't getting much traffic at all. It's a shame to see something I once enjoyed and would look forward to using, now be so underused and mostly forgotten.

Anyway, creating the ASCII art fairies is a tricky thing. I want them to look ethereal - but that's very hard to do with a smaller ASCII art image. It gets easier as you make them bigger. I just prefer keeping them on the small side. They are easier to post and send if they aren't huge.

I put elves, pixies and fairies together. They seem to look about the same in general. Though the Santa's elf type is not so slender and graceful. These elves are the type you could find in a fantasy fairytale sort of story or an RPG game.

I hope you try making some ASCII art yourself. Use this collection as an example and inspiration.
