Fasting and Prayer #3
Having shared words on prayers, definitions, why and other types of prayer in series of other articles titled “prayer”, I introduced fasting in my first article, defining it and telling us its types. My second article is centered on why we need to abstain from foods.
In this article I shall talk about the benefits of fasting.
Benefits/Uses of Fasting
In this article I will want us to see some of the benefits we can derive from undergoing this spiritual exercise.
(i) Gaining Deeper Fellowship with God
When we fast it helps us to gain deeper fellowship with God. Some people have been craving to have deeper fellowship with God to knowing God the more, this is one of the means of gaining deeper fellowship with him.
(ii) Helps us to Subdue the Flesh
We may not be able to subdue the flesh when we are full, but when we embark on this spiritual exercise we shall be helped by God to subdue the flesh putting it under control.
(iv) Helps us to Grow Spiritually
Like nutrients, water, microorganisms is to the growing plant so is the fasting to a believer, for it would assist us in growing from babyish, frail posture to a mature position in the Lord. A plant that does not have adequate nutrients irrespective of whatever composition the soil is made up of the plant would die or not grow as expected and the farmer would run at a loss on it. No farmer would want to run at a loss; thus they would apply fertilizers to their soils to enhance the growth of the plants. In the same way can we do this since we do not want God to regret over us.
(iii) Helps to Elevate Our Emphasis on Spiritual Matters/Things
When we know that spiritual phase is higher and better than the physical phase we would want to do this more, because it would assist us in raising our emphasis on spiritual things other than physical things.
(vi) Helps Us to Get Ready for Spiritual Harvest
Many a time our hearts and minds are blank to the things of God, we would think less of heaven because of the surrounding predicaments and issues but when we undergo this exercise it helps in getting us ready for the spiritual harvests because we shall always see God at work. (Acts 13:1-4; 14:23),
“And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.” (Act 14:23)
(vii) Encourages Us to Be Humble
Many of us after performing a feat spiritually, or better put after God has used us to perform a special feat in the spirit we become puffed up, we become spiritually arrogant, in fact some people by their repeatedly claiming to be humble they are also arrogant by that. When some people (preachers) are saying unto God be the glory deeply sited in their hearts is the demon of pride, but because our spiritual eyes are not opened to see that we wouldn’t be able to say that.
However, when we undergo something like this, we would be spiritually boosted to be humble to know that we are nothing to the world and we shall leave with none when we die.
(viii) Helps us to Loose the Chains of Injustice
This spiritual exercise helps us to loose the chains of injustice assist us to deliver the right judgment wherever, whenever.
“Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.” (Exo 23:6)
(ix) Assists in Untying the Chords of Yokes
The world is under the yokes of sin, we are under the bondage of the devil to remove those yokes, we need this spiritual exercise at times.
“And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” (Isa. 10:27)
(v) God Given Spiritual Atomic Bomb
It is a spiritual atomic bomb that the Lord has given us to destroy the strongholds of the evil ones.
“(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)” (II Cor. 10:4)
(x) Assists in Freeing the Oppressed
Believers all over the world have been called to this special office of deliverance, however, in freeing some oppressed people we need this exercise.
“Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” (Mt. 17:21)
The story that precedes this verse is that the disciples before Jesus arrival were unable to free a baby whom his father brought to them. This generated a lot of furor and when Jesus arrived he asked them what is going on, the father of the oppressed child replied him that he brought his son for healing but his disciples were unable to deliver the child and Jesus rebuked the devil inside the child and healed the child.
The disciples came afterwards to Jesus to ask him why they were unable to do that, and Jesus told them that such things as this require fasting and prayer at times.
Do you also wish to be used of God in setting the oppressed free? Then you would need to do this exercise occasionally or as the spirit impressed it on your heart.
Here are some of the benefits of fasting, I will continue with these benefits of fasting in the next article.
(v) Helps us to Usher in a Great Revival
For effective and long-lasting revival in our communities, families, fellowships, churches we need to undertake this exercise individually and collectively. (Mt. 9:14-15),
