Finding a Godly Christian Spouse through Matchmaking in the Church

Updated on August 29, 2012

The Christian Marriage is God's Love and Blessings Shared by a Man and a Woman who are fully committed to One Another.

Matchmaking in the Bible

The first marriage in the world was made by God. "And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." (Gen. 2:18) "Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man." (Gen. 2:22) Notice that it was God who "brought her to the man.” In other words God was the Matchmaker.

Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, "Please, put your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac." (Gen. 24:1-4)

Abraham's servant had a strange way of finding a wife for his master's son Isaac. The virgin Rebekah not only drew water from the well for him but also for his camels as well. And camels do drink a lot of water. Both Isaac and Rebekah had never seen one another, and because they had trusted Abraham's servant and his mission both of them accepted one another as husband and wife.

In our day and age people find their own spouses and matchmaking is considered an ancient and outmoded practice, and even Christian people in Western countries do not accept it. In Asian countries some Christian denominations still practice this custom.

A Successful Matchmaking between Church Members in Two Different Countries and in Two Different Continents

In the late Eighties after my final preaching assignment in our Church in London,England I was approached by an elderly sister who asked me to find a suitable brother who would be a good match for her daughter.

After coming back to the United States I talked to my wife Sister Joan about this matter. Both of us agreed a certain brother who had lived in San Francisco would be an ideal match. After all, his family had also indicated to me at one time, to find a suitable spouse for him.

My wife and I had never done any matchmaking in the past. We were very cautious in not making any mistakes that would cause embarrassment to both families from the two countries in the two continents. We had been praying to God for guidance. First of all, we talked to the brother and the sister separately by long distance telephone, and I also wrote to them separately describing each person's bio-data. After we were assured that both of them were comfortable with the information that they had received, we then gave them each other's home addresses and telephone numbers. At that time the Internet was still in its infancy and not many wrote emails.

After a while, in fact, in less than a month when I called the brother in San Francisco he told me that he had already made a proposal of marriage to the sister in London through long-distance telephone.

In October 1995 when my wife and I celebrated our thirtieth wedding anniversay by touring London and Paris, the brother and sister had already established a good family in London, and they celebrated their successful marriage with us in a very distinguished restaurant in London.

Do matchmaking with Christian brothers and sisters in an international setting work at all? Our first experierience with this kind of relationship had been successful, and we can only attribute it completely to God's guidance. There must be absolute trust in God and from all the people who are involved in this relationship otherwise it will not work at all.

May God guide our Christian brothers and sisters who are seeking godly spouses through the matchmaking programs in the Church.

A Single American Christian Brother Seeks a Wife Internationally

This Christian brother who currently worships in our church in the Houston area has indicated to me that he is seeking a wife of like-faith and like-minds. He is also a Christian prepper (a person who prepares for the Lord's Second Coming and the Great Tribulation).

He is a businessman who travels internationally (Mainland China, Canada and Texas) is learning to speak the Chinese language. He would like to have a Chinese wife, but he will also accept whoever God wants to give him in order to start a family.

Although he presently lives in Houston but he intends to build a new house with off-grid renewable energy on a one and half acre rural farmland that is to be self-sufficient and self-sustaining.

This brother has good health and good looks that gives him the appearance of one who is much below his age. This is because he believes in living a clean life and on a biblical diet. He has told our church members that he likes our church.

If you or you know of any person who is interested in having a godly and permanent relationship with this Christian brother you may write to me.

I once had a dear friend check our present home before buying it long distance and sight unseen, just to see if there might not be something which needed pre-purchase repair. I had already been told by the still, small voice that the house was the right one. His final comment was "I can't find a house that suits my own wife, but [with the one minor item he noticed] it seems to be fine." We have lived in our home now for 31 years and it has been the home now best remembered by our three youngest children, all successful adults with families of their own. Your key in the first matchmaking was knowing some essential details about both persons and prayers on their behalf. This latest effort is likely one of trying to match a known person to a less well known person. I suspect you will need some real inspiration this time around, too.

I like this love story -- what great trust they both had in you. You are to be commended. Trusting that you'll be able to succeed again with this new Brother a godly wife ...
