Five Important Reasons for the Ten Commandments

In this hub, I will discuss five important reasons for the Ten Commandments.

1. The Ten Commandments reflect the holy character of God.

“… the law is holy”. - Romans 7:12

“… the LORD our God is holy.’ - Psalm 99:9

Since both the Law and God are called “holy”, that means the Law reflects God’s character.

"The Ten Commandments are a summary of God's character of love. The first four commandments describe who God is, His power, His territory and authority. The last six describe what God is like: His honesty, His purity, His faithfulness. All of these have always been true and will always be true."1

2. The Ten Commandments give us a moral standard to live by.

“… all Thy commandments are righteousness.” - Psalm 119:172

Just imagine what it would be like if everyone actually kept the Ten Commandments. There would be no stealing, no lying, no murdering. Children would respect their parents and vice versa. It would be Heaven on earth!

3. The Ten Commandments identify sin.

“… I would not have known sin, but through the law; for I would not have known lust, except that the law had said, "Thou shalt not covet." - Romans 7:7

The Bible tells us that everyone “has sinned” (Romans 3:23); and the penalty for sinning is “death” (Romans 6:23). This brings us to the next reason for God’s Law.

4. The Ten Commandments lead us to Jesus.

They do this by first showing us that we are under the condemnation (death penalty) of the Law, which can only be remedied by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

“… Christ died for our sins …” - 1 Corinthians 15:3

5. The Ten Commandments prepare us for Heaven.

“Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the Tree of Life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” - Revelation 22:14

In order for us to obey the commandments so that we may be ready for Heaven, we must first have Jesus in our life. This is because it is only by Jesus’ enabling power that we can obey the Law: “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to those who believe in His name”.

The Ten Commandments reflect the character of God, give us a moral standard to live by, identify sin, lead us to Jesus, and prepare us for Heaven. Considering these reasons, the Ten Commandments are an indispensable part of Christian living.

I enjoyed the revelation of God'S character as seen in the ten commandments. I also like how you pointed out that God wishes for us to obey them through faith in Christ of course. Todays Christianity sometimes skips over our expression of loyalty to God through obedience.

      A well stated revelation.
